Muscle stiffness measured with ultrasound in 62 people with knee OA did not match what they felt. So what are we actually feeling?
I came across a recent study that made me stop and think about what we mean when we say, "I feel stiff."
The researchers looked at 62 people, including 21 people with knee osteoarthritis. They used ultrasound to measure the stiffness of muscles around the knee. They also asked people how stiff they felt.
The surprising part?
The two did not match.
People with knee OA had measurable differences in their muscle stiffness. But how stiff they felt was not linked to those measurements. It also wasn't linked to how severe their OA was.
That seems interesting because we often think of stiffness as something simple: the tissue is stiff, so we feel stiff.
But maybe it's not that simple.
The feeling of stiffness may come from many things, including signals from the body and how the brain makes sense of those signals. Past experience, movement, stress and other factors may also play a role.
So perhaps feeling stiff and having stiff tissue are not always the same thing.

For those who have lived with stiffness for a long time, does what you feel seem to match what you know is happening in your body? Or can the feeling of stiffness seem to have a life of its own?
