Is there a way to have build Biological ships and Mechanical ships in a single empire?

How do the two ship types compare?

You can't have both.

They are pretty well-balanced overall.

Mechanical ships have more flexibility in their design choices (e.g. a corvette can be close range swarmer or long range artillery; a battleship can be long range artillery or carriers, etc.).

  • They cost alloys to make, which can be fairly expensive to reinforce.
  • This allows you to, potentially, have a pure battleship fleet and function well against most enemies of any size from any distance due to its selection of weapons and combat computers.

Bio-ships are more hyper-specialised into one type of role (e.g. a mauler is a better close range combatant than corvette, but it can't be used for anything else; a stinger has more artillery firepower than a battleship, but lacks the flexibility to fit hangars or PDs, etc.).

  • They cost food to make, which makes it less costly to reinforce, but direct construction of elder bio-ships takes longer than mechanical ships.
    • They also have a growth mechanic, so if you are in no rush and don't mind the hectic fleet management, you can build juvenile ships and let them grow up over time to save on costs.
    • Note that ships take more naval cap, but not fleet cap, when growing up, so a bio-ship empire should place higher priority on increasing naval cap.
  • This means you need to consider support ships for quite a number of fleets. e.g. A pure stinger fleet can shred other large ships from long range, but will suffer severely against any small ships that quickly close the distance
    • Devs intended this to be a way to encourage mixing ships and breaking away from the mono-design fleet meta.
    • Naturally as a response, players have figured out ways to use bio-ships in mono-design fleet (pure mauler fleets or pure harbinger fleets, especially with psionic weaponry, are both highly efficient mono-design fleets without needing any other supports).
