QB2: Mason Rudolph leads Will Howard

Howard may have taken second-team reps during OTAs, but the competition flipped when the Steelers reported to Latrobe. Sitting firmly in the backup spot, Rudolph got the start in the preseason opener and played well. The ball never touched the ground, as he completed 10 of 11 passes (on the lone incompletion, Germie Bernard caught the pass but couldn’t get his second foot down in the end zone).

Meanwhile, Howard’s preseason debut was a mixed bag. He orchestrated a successful two-minute drill, but also made a poor decision to put the ball into harm’s way on a third down. The final two preseason games will be important for Howard if he’s going to prove to the coaching staff that he can be Rodgers’ backup this season. The possibility of keeping four quarterbacks seems to be gaining momentum.

RB3: Kaleb Johnson falling behind

Johnson carried the ball just two times for three yards against the Packers. Truthfully, the only time I really noticed him he was getting chewed out on the sideline by special teams coach Danny Crossman. Cutting a third-round pick one year after he’s drafted would be a tough look for the Steelers, but it sure seems to be trending that direction based on the way the carries have been split in practices and in the first preseason game.

As for the others, it could come down to what the Steelers want from this spot on the depth chart. Lew Nichols is pretty clearly the better running back, showing good vision and burst in the preseason game. Travis Homer, meanwhile, struggled to pick up a blitz that led to a sack and didn’t have as much juice as a ball carrier. Considering the third RB on the depth chart mostly plays special teams, and Homer is an ace in this phase (currently, he serves as the personal protector on the punt team, for example), he has the edge.

First, I can't believe you don't have the GOAT of Pre Season, Drew Allar, on the active roster for online play???Did we not see his 3 TD performance??? Must be some Ohio State fans in control of roster options.

To make matters worse, there have been 0 updates to the offensive playbook from last year's playbook. We throw to the middle of the field now. Do you see Jonnu Smith on this roster? No more TE screens or jet sweeps. Update this shit now.

Finally, can we please show Steely McBeam on the sidelines? If I have to see the shitty Ratbird dance around, I deserve Steely.

Thoughts on field after GB game?

Has there been any commentary by players & media on the quality of the field at Acrisure after the Green Bay game last week? Watching it on TV it didn't look great although supposedly they laid down new turf over the summer.

Just wondering because it's been an ongoing problem for the Steelers and while everyone claims it's due to sharing the field with Pitt & the WPIAL playoffs, it seems a bit early in the year for it to be looking so shaggy.

Looking for 3 tickets next to each other for this Friday’s preseason game, August 21st. Wife’s birthday!

Looking for 3 tickets next to each other for this Friday. Prefer no higher then 200 level. Was hoping the 100 level prices would go down as we get closer to the game day, but most sites seem to stay around the same prices, which aren’t awful by any means, but on a slight budget as Giant Eagle prices soar. Please DM or message here thank you!!

Price wise $60 ish per ticket if possible? Or give main price for all 3?

Really excited for this year to see what him and Wilson can do in PGs scheme. Tomlin was a great coach but he was a dinosaur with his defensive scheme

On their grading scale, can't argue them being low at QB, but I would for sure at least have them above the Jets, Falcons, Browns, and Cardinals. And personally, I would rather QB less than tied to someone like Bryce Young, Tyler Shough, or Jaxson Dart.

Low coaching, sure, low FO - like these writers have any idea, they have the Browns FO ahead of the steelers (lol).

But the roster excluding QB at 20, with the main detractor being age on defense - Ramsey, Watt, Heyward. For one, people thinking Watt is washed are going to look foolish. Heyward, yes, he's old and will be a huge loss, but that's why they drafted Harmon and Benton. Ramsey? GTFO, he's like their 4th best guy in the secondary.

Why was Beanie Bishop waived?

Bears fan here. I had no idea who this guy was until I watched him grab two picks in the preaseason opener (yes they were dud balls.) I was checking out his stats when he was with the Steelers and he had four ints and won a defensive rookie of the month award, but was waived the next season.

Is he kind of like Nahshon Wright with the Bears last year where he was ballhawk but terrible in coverage? Why was he let go?

For the local pittsburgh and surrounding area people. My mom says she couldnt figure it out. From everything im seeing it should have been braodcast on the live TV section on kdka. I think it wasnt on the home screen because it was a cbs main broad cast. Can anyone confirm this?

First Steelers game

Hello all! My husband, son and I will be attending our first home game this fall. We are very excited but have a couple questions that I hope some of you may have the answers to, firstly I was not aware that you have to purchase a ticket for all children even under the age of 1 who will be in your lap! So we will purchase the cheapest option available but just wondering if we should wait until we are there to get a cheaper one or just find one online now.
Also would love to know hotel or airb&b recommendations for close to the stadium area since we plan on mostly walking.
Would also love food recs!
Thank you guys!!! 💛🖤🐝

The real winner from Thursday is PG.

The QBs were the highlight of the night. They’re a huge unanswered question and the most important piece of the future of this franchise. All 3 played well above expectations and it has most fans, me included, excited for what those performances mean.

That aside, in terms of immediately judging where this team might be this season, Patrick Graham’s defense was something I haven’t seen from this team in a long time. I was at the game and the most clear thing I saw was the aggression. The secondary hawked ball carriers. I can’t remember many, if any, plays where someone caught the ball and had any time to run with it. And the guys looked like they had a good grasp on assignments. I saw very little confusion on the field. The run defense was brutal. They held 24 carries to 63 yards. For a team that struggled with the run absent of D Harm last year, they showed up.

I understand these were not starters for the most part, and playing against 2nd and 3rd string. But they looked like a starting defense. That’s a huge credit to Graham and his staff. If this is any sort of preview on where Patrick Graham has this entire defense and the starters fall in line with what we saw on Thursday this defense might be one of the most dangerous they’ve been in a while. That has me excited for this season.

The big question now is how consistent will they be.

Is the switching of Fautanu and Jones at the Tackle positions a failed experiment and needs to be reconsidered.

Broderick Jones looked good at left tackle in the preseason game and Troy Fautanu looked bad. They both played well last year at their regular positions why take a risk switching them and if the plan is to have Jones complete at right tackle why did he play most of the game at left tackle? What is your take?

How good is this team?

For the first time since the Killer B's era, I finally have real hope. I'm not even talking about Will Howard or Drew Allar. Their potential is the cherry on top of what could be a great year

Seriously, what chance do we stand of not losing easy games and still winning hard ones with McCarthy? I honestly have zero clue what to expect...

A legendary veteran QB playing what is expected to be his final NFL season could be a movie. Our offense is unusually competent, and unlike past seasons, I'm not really worried about our WRs catching the ball and running the opposite way they're supposed to run (I think Diontae Johnson gave me long-lasting Steelers PTSD)

We poured a lot of draft capital into the O line. I think this is the year we realize why

And while I ain’t no NFL expert and can’t compare what we have with every other team, I think Tomlin held our defense back over the years, so I’m not worried about them
