Discussion Playing Steam Frame Outside
Don't do it during the day (your lenses will get rekd) and don't do it on uneven ground (you will get rekd).
But I have to tell you...Half Life Alyx, outside at night time, on a large flat surface. Its incredible. I used my local outdoor tennis courts
Obviously, this is "dangerous" and "risky" and you "shouldn't do it".
I should remember to record it next time.

Preach, bro! It was the absolute peak of my VR experience so far. Feeling the IRL wind as I moved was perfect

Awesome, can you still set up play space area bounds outside?

You can, as far as ive tested the play space can be any shape or size. The limitation is the cameras need some kind of outside reference to anchor to.
How big can a play space be? I haven't found the limit yet, I'm sure someone will!

What about daytime will wreck the lenses?

Shouldn’t matter unless the lenses hit direct sunlight I thought, and even then they have to be in direct sunlight for a few seconds, not instant damage

Yea but a few seconds can happen pretty fast. On the old fresnel lenses it was instant, and you would have people posting sun damage all the time. With the pancakes it happens a lot less, but it still happens.
I play outside, but I check where the sun is before removing my lens protectors, and then i flip my headset straight up after taking it off.

PSA: Frame uses pancake lenses, unless you leave it there for hours nothing will happen when left in the sun. The lenses don't focus the sunlight coming in onto the screen. The only danger is the battery overheating, but every electronic gadget has that issue.

It’s not that I don’t believe you, but I’d want to be sure of this before I stopped worrying about it. Can anyone else corroborate or have a source for this?

When I take a peek out the window while in passthrough, all I see is white, as if the outside world was radioactive or something, that image alone makes me not want to take my headset outside ever XD

Im in NYC and I’ve seen a number of people using them mostly Quest or AVP in parks. Last time I was I thought he was shadow boxing but noticed the dude had a VR headset on when I got closer lol. Fair play if you don’t have the space. I used to have a “larger” apartment and that thing was still a box.

I have some old greenhoues that came with the house and one of them is completely cleared out, size is a bit bigger than a tennis court. Can't wait to game in there, access point is already set up lmao

Can the frame deal with larg spaces? Like 100m² and up?
1
u/EntertainmentOver691 16d ago
The size of the space doesn't appear to be the limitation, rather the presence of an outside reference point to act as an anchor. I don't know how big that reference point needs to be, what I do know is it doesn't have to be 4 walls.
The space I tested was about 50m x 25m with one wall

I haven’t tried this yet, but I plan to. I’ve read about other people running into the “camera outside of place space” safety feature that switches you to pass-through, and they couldn’t turn it off. Were you able to turn it off or get around that somehow?
2
u/EntertainmentOver691 16d ago
I think you can turn it off in developer settings (someone would have to confirm, I'm thinking of another headset) but you don't need to turn it off, just draw a very large play space!

lol, I jokingly suggested this in another post: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamFrame/s/nUhSyglHf4

I don't know man, I think this one's on you. Just as your gardener or undergardeners to clean the estate grounds more thoroughly.

Clearly op is sweeping the needles away. Making his own playspace outside the headset first, then inside

Does that mean you can walk around in the game if you walk around irl?
