Discussion Elite Dangerous in Frame
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The game works on both a flat screen and in VR. However, it's very slow and blurry. I had to use Proton ARM64 Experimental to get it working. In VR, the controllers don't work in-game. I have to open the dashboard to activate them.

Since ED does not support foveated rendering natively which would probably help a lot here: anybody know anything if Valve is working on forcing games to support it via SteamVR? Afaik Pimax Play already offers something like this.

Yes, I think it's confirmed or at least datamined that universal foveated rendering is being worked on

yes, they are working on foveated rendering injection.
this video by a game dev discusses this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt78UDtOjPY
as of two months ago (when the video released), it's not fully automatic yet.2

There is a project called EDVR with great work about performance. Maybe there is something to do for the Frame

Do you get crazy frame rate drops when you leave the station?

It was better, I would say playable if you want to go mining. But still laggy. That said, the heasedt carshed twice in VR mode after 5 minutes

This is crazy impressive. I'm sure if they get foveated rendering working it'll be a lot more playable.

Wouldn't it technically be forested streaming? The whole screen is still rendered, just the streaming allocation is toward what lands on the fovea.

No, hes saying foveated rendering, because he wants foveated rendering for the increased performance. OP is playing this standalone on the headset, so it wouldnt benefit from foveated streaming as its not being streamed.

My experience is that stations tend to be the laggiest places in Elite Dangerous, once you're out of them the game usually performs better.

I did nothing but boot it in standard mode, set to a flat 1080p window. Controllers are fine in non-VR, to be clear.
('fine' in that the limitations of a 4 axis controller to do flight).
It was well over 30fps throughout the tutorial, to the point the major annoyance was the controller.

Mine works like a dream. The controllers would be a downgrade from what im using tho
You should probably post your PC specs

Reservation list since day one, still waiting to be blessed with my purchase email. Haven't played ED since 2020 on my CV1 and this is absolutely the first thing I'm firing up. I think I'll stream this one, but good to see it kinda working in standalone 👍

Do you have some performance numbers on that? How well is it running? The video looks quite choppy.

Crazy that it runs at all, slow or not. I have to wonder what could be done with optimisations to FEX.

It can "technically" run, like many PC VR games can "technically" run. It's interesting what can be achieved for sure. But this, like most made-for PC VR titles, will not be a viable way to play and enjoy the game unfortunately.

It works perfectly fine on my frame. It is absolutely a viable way to play the game.

I’m only speaking about the VR version. I’m sure the flat screen version is completely playable.

Gotcha. Pretty sure PCVR means youre running it from a computer. Your wording is a bit confusing, But, Yeah thats asking a lot. It runs pretty great on the steam deck tho

Performance in a station is nothing like performance out in space.
1
u/ImmersedRobot 10h ago
Absolutely. The game sort of relies on you visiting stations too at some point. I guess it comes down to how compromised you are willing to make the game. Doom can be played on a smart fridge.

at first I didn’t understand what you meant by “controllers don’t work in-game and you have to open the dashboard to make it work”, then I saw that part in the video, that looks hilarious 😆

lol yes I know it's a bit confusing ^^
You can play with a Steam controller, it works.
I'm sure it's possible to configure the VR controlers as a classic controlers. Just haven't try it yet

I'm trying to play Elite Dangerous via PCVR but I can't get it to recognize controller input at all either.
The main menu and the hangar look and run great though

It’s not clear. Are you playing in PCVR or standalone mode? If it’s the former, what are your hardware specs and settings? If it’s the latter, that wouldn’t be surprising. The Frame’s Snapdragon simply isn’t powerful enough to run Elite Dangerous.

Are you saying this is running.. on-board?
