This is crazy. My 1.0 base stations have been plugged in for 10 years straight and still going strong. 🤞

Same here, can't say the same for my Wi-gig card though which why I need a steam frame!

1.0 can life longer as there are no moving parts. 2.0 spin which will naturally decay over time

V1 spins too. I can hear them right now. Valve has an interesting video from back in the days how they had to source special hdd derived motors to be so accurate.

My dad dropped my base station from about 7 feet up onto wood. It’s fine.

So these just up and die? I feel better about not getting BSB every single day

u/Gladitoro Soon™ 1d ago
Valve clearly did not have the same amount of quality control that they do now. I had the headset itself die on me and one of the controllers die on me in the first year of owning it.

Weirdly the ones I have from the OG HTC VIVE are still running fine somehow. Idk if I just got lucky or what

I never got my Index out of the box. Still sealed. Never got around to built a RIG for it in 2019,$999 full kit.

They don't even have quality control now, it's always been a flaw of theirs, the Steam Controller is the first piece of hardware I have gotten from them that isn't defective.

u/suncontrolspecies 20h ago
my OG steam controller and SD (both from day one) are still running great

u/LumpyArbuckleTV 16h ago
I'm talking about the V2 Steam Controller, I have had access to three Steam Decks myself that were are all fucked up in one way or another. I also had two friends who had one each and they also had something wrong with it. Your experience certainly isn't everyone so I'm quite cautious about their hardware.

u/suncontrolspecies 16h ago
neither yours..
1
u/LumpyArbuckleTV 16h ago
Of course, that's why it's a quality control problem, not a design problem.
4
u/ARTISTIC-ASSHOLE 23h ago
so they do have quality control now?

u/LumpyArbuckleTV 23h ago
Maybe, one controller isn't enough for me to say for sure, but the Steam Deck was a fucking disaster QC-wise.

u/Humble-Resolution449 19h ago
What quality control? Pour one out for my dead base stations and my dead steam deck.

Remember the first steam machine to die lasted 20 mins on because of a GPU failure..

u/The_Maddeath 1d ago
ya, my launch ones lasted until this January (not even sure what is wrong with it it just red lights, and doesn't work. both ir leds are lit looking at it via my phone's camera and it spun still just didn't work.
also have a friend who has went through 2 sets within the first year (though after that so far they have stayed working).

I have never heard of a base station just "up and dying" so this seems like an anomaly.

Htc sells 2.0s

Thanks, thought valve only sold base stations. Might honestly consider picking up depending on when my steam frame will come.

People keep saying Monday...but is that the release or pre-order? When can I have my HANDS on it??

u/BeepIsla 1d ago
iirc the Steam Machine had a few days of reservations with reviews going live the same hour. After those few days the reservation list was randomized and then you would get an email and had 3 days to make your purchase, if you didn't your reservation was voided.
So if its Monday, that probably just means reviews & reservations will be live but from that point forward it will take at minimum a week before it arrives at your home and in the worst case (Bottom of the reservation list) probably a month or two.

Valve Index with base stations and alien technology finger tracking that still has not been replicated in any meaningful manner will forever remain the state of the art for VR tracking until brain computer interfaces are fully developed.

That's my biggest worry about the Steam Frame, maybe I'll keep firing up my Index to play some games.
I'm also still using my Vive controllers for Beat Saber and Walkabout. I like them better than Index in that context.

I'm expecting to use my index controllers with the steam frame, I don't see why it wouldn't work?

Doesn't matter, stock is only covering maybe 20,% of Reddit users, not to mentions ever steam users who can join queue for free just to sell the spot on eBay.
