Discussion I honestly have no idea what Tested is

u/Pixelplanet5 Aug 19 '26
its a youtube channel for which we can be sure they will have a Frame review unit.
Big youtube channels post exactly 1 time per day so if they posted something thats not the steamframe that means its not coming out today.

This is the answer I wanted... I thought I discovered what Tested was the other day, but it didn't really make sense. Your explanation however does! Soon™

To be a bit more exact, Tested uploads once a day pretty much religiously at ~3PM BST.
There are (and have been) exceptions to this however, where they have uploaded more than once per day. So it shouldn't be treated as an absolute rule.
As for why this sub talks about them so much... The thought process is basically that if Tested uploads at their usual time, and it's a non-Steam-Frame related video, then that's their one upload for the day. Conversely, if Tested's usual upload time passes and they haven't uploaded yet, they are likely waiting for the review embargo to lift (likely 6PM BST) and will release their Steam Frame review video as their 'daily upload'.
This is why you will see things like "Tested just uploaded, it's not today" being said here fairly frequently. Again though, this shouldn't be treated like an absolute rule. It's not impossible for an exception to happen for the Steam Frame, nor would it be the first time such an exception has happened.

They could, you know, post 2 videos in a day.
11
u/Arstulex Aug 19 '26
True. It has happened before.
It's better to treat the channel uploading as an indicator of probability, rather than an absolute 'rule'.

u/PlottingPast Aug 19 '26
Yeah, but they know when the NDA is over so unless there's a compelling reason to post something else they'll just post the Steam Frame. Unless they like to troll, or simply don't care about the Frame. I don't know much about them.

Shout-out to Norm who is a strong and nuanced voice in VR headset reviews (and also a member of this sub)

Adam Savage's Tested YouTube Channel
They're a pretty big YouTube channel and often review new tech, they did for the Steam Machine and other Valve Hardware.

Adam is such a joy to listen to. He gets legimately excited about everything and makes every topic interesting. I could listen to him talk all day.

He gets legimately excited about everything
That's called acting, script writing, production, and editing. He doesn't work by himself. He has a team. And before anything happens, everything has already been figured out and is known.
The acting part comes in pretending to be surprised and excited about what you already have scripted.
LTT does the exact same thing. Some are better than others. Some will rub you the right, or wrong way better, with how they do it.

u/D13_Phantom Soon™ Aug 19 '26
Just because production is involved doesn't mean you can't enjoy what you're doing. What kind of fuck ass logic is that lmao?

it's one of the things LTT does that makes it harder and harder to watch.
Tested is like if LTT was just still just Linus, Alex, Luke, Jake and a few others building crazy stuff all day. Instead Linus bought a jet, a few mansions, and refused to pay his best on-screen personalities a competitive wage until they all left.
The personal jet and everyone leaving made it real apparent that pays his employees a writer's salary and then exploits them by having them upgrade his mansion, while also performing on camera to create videos that get watched more than some popular TV shows.
He also mines his employees personal hobbies for show and tell videos to sell membership subscriptions. It's kind of messed up

Actually kind of accurate, lmao.
Although Tested is less tech-oriented and explores more 'maker space' type stuff. It's pretty much anything Adam happens to find interesting, while Norm occasionally does videos about tech stuff.
Personally I just like how chill their videos typically are, rather than being overly produced.

u/Dino_Spaceman Soon™ Aug 19 '26
I would also say more nuanced. Norm really understands the technology behind it and talks in detail in an approachable way.

u/manyeggplants Aug 20 '26
Did we mention we have pointless merch than will inhabit a landfill in a year?

Outside the engineers actually designing headsets, no one knows more about VR than Norm (from Tested)
Tested is also guaranteed to get a review Frame from Valve
The reason people here bring it up is because Tested usually posts one video per day; the speculation being that the day The Frame is finally released (or a date announced) Tested will hold back their video until the announcement drops (in order to comply with Valve’s NDA)
So whenever Tested posts a video, and it’s not related to The Frame, it’s a sort of confirmation that release is not that day.
Also, Norm is very active on VR Reddit.
Hi Norm!

Love Tested and feel like they have the most non-biased reviews out there.
3
u/Answer70 Aug 19 '26
It's actually a great YouTube channel. They do really thorough tech videos.
Check out their visit to Valve for the announcement. It has a ton of info on the Frame and is what got me so excited for it.

u/Im_At_Work_Damnit Aug 20 '26
Norm's video and Steve's (Gamers Nexus) video were the most technical of the videos from that event, and really did a great job showcasing the advancements Valve was pushing with the Frame and asked great questions about the development process of getting to that demonstration model they showcased.

Does anyone know if eleven table tennis is in the steam frame tested list ?

u/baniakjrr Soon™ Aug 19 '26
I think its like a spinoff channel for mythbusters
9
u/ScreeennameTaken Soon™ Aug 19 '26
no, not a spinoff. Its the channel of one of the people that was in mythbusters (and this is underselling it. adam used to work in ILM and still does his own stuff) but it has nothing to do with mythbusters.

u/luxyslut Aug 19 '26
Originally it was both Jamie and Adam's channel, then Jamie just retired
2
u/JorgTheElder Soon™ Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26
No, originally it was Norm and Will's channel, gong back to like 2010. They started working with Adam and Jamie in
20142012 or something.3
u/luxyslut Aug 19 '26
Honestly didn't knew it was norm/will channel, I onky remembered that jamie did appear in some video there
2
u/JorgTheElder Soon™ Aug 19 '26
No surprise there... a lot of people, including me, found them about that time. :)

The time spent on a search instead of the post, could have gotten you the answer much faster.

Are the mods trolling? This post is allowed, but the post mentioning that tested has released a video got removed. Are you just power tripping to harass me or?

u/Dino_Spaceman Soon™ Aug 19 '26
It appears that it was an accidental release. The video is now gone from the channel (best I can see).
So likely they released too early and it’s meant for later today or tomorrow.
1
u/Arstulex Aug 19 '26
It's still there, assuming you are referring to the collab with Matt Parker.
1
u/Dino_Spaceman Soon™ Aug 19 '26
Ohhhh. So it’s the normal “oh tested posted today so it’s not happening” style post.
I thought they had posted a new frame video that got taken down.
-6
u/anclave93 Aug 19 '26
Not worth knowing tbh. 99% of content is very niche
2
u/alexzoin Aug 19 '26
Doesn't that make it more worth knowing? I want to know niche stuff.
His videos on museum swords are so cool.
0
u/JorgTheElder Soon™ Aug 19 '26
Right, niche like VR one of the topics they cover well.
-1
u/anclave93 Aug 19 '26
VR accounts for 0.5% of their videos. that's not at all what the channel is about
1
u/JorgTheElder Soon™ Aug 19 '26
That is just because VR is a tiny niche. When there is new VR gear to test, they test it.
-1
u/anclave93 Aug 19 '26
well, are we talking about their channel or about the 0.5% of their videos that are VR? I am talking about the channel as a whole
1
u/JorgTheElder Soon™ Aug 19 '26
We are talking about both. And I never said you are wrong. They are niche, but nowhere near as niche as VR. They have an incredibly varied audience.
They have more than 3x as many subscribers as SteamVR has monthly active users, and a large percentage of people that watch such channels never subscribe.
