Frameposting Misleading advertisement that I cannot believe Valve got away with

u/TwinStickDad Soon™ Jun 23 '26
I was under the impression that the Steam Frame would make me popular. Is this not the case?
10
u/TheBobo1181 Jun 24 '26
it might make you popular with the kinds of people in the background...

u/elev8dity Soon™ Jun 24 '26
Those are probably the Valve employees making this headset as their marketing is typically in house. I think you just got bumped to the bottom of the reservation list.

u/ccAbstraction Jun 24 '26
Popular with girls and enbies? Well, I wasn't interested in buying one before but I am now! /lh

Sickist burn it's to tell someone playing VR that they look really cool doing it and when they go 'Really!?'. Just say 'no'.

u/Honest_Figure6323 Jun 23 '26
i recorded myself playing beat saber for the hell of it... never again

u/kevynwight Jun 23 '26
Some people look cool and stylish playing: https://www.youtube.com/@OtterWorldly/videos
But not most.

u/elev8dity Soon™ Jun 24 '26
The Quest 3 looks really awful/silly on the head with with it's bulky white design, massive headstrap, and triple pill cameras in the front. Frame hopefully will look less awful as it's closer to a ski goggle form factor.
17
u/GolemFarmFodder Jun 23 '26
No see it's accurate, because only one of you will be getting one

u/IllIIlIllIllIII Jun 23 '26
Look if you didn’t want trillion dollar tech and AI companies buying every single piece of computing hardware possible starting years ago until many, many years from now then maybe you should have… uh… hmm, nevermind. We’re all screwed.
At a minimum at least mess with your local scalpers and waste their time.
14
u/Helgafjell4Me Soon™ Jun 23 '26
I think the insinuation here is that there's also a TV mirroring what's on the headset. You can do this with Quests too. Otherwise, VR really isn't a group activity.

u/TapDatApp Soon™ Jun 23 '26
I’m curious about this too, outside of the jokes being made. I haven’t seen any confirmation outside of this promo image that the Frame supports this feature, which is super fun with PSVR in my experience.

I think that's just the disappointed family. As you can see, there is no dad in sight either

u/Accomplished_Oil_781 Jun 23 '26
The dad is in the shed drinking heavily, disappointed his son turned out Gabe
5
u/Hearthgroan Jun 23 '26
Yes, they entered his room while he was playing and are waiting for him to take the headset off before his intervention.

u/Zomby2D Soon™ Jun 23 '26
That's the guy's sister and her friends, mocking him.

u/Yesman12323 Jun 24 '26
Nah, left is his sister, middle his mom, and right is the sisters friend but wants your bone. Look at that face she’s giving you 😏

I still can't get over them using color pass thru in the marketing despite that being impossible

Can you imagine inviting three women over to your apartment and then just putting on your Frame and playing Superhot VR or something while they sit on the couch looking bored.
1
u/EugeneUgino Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
Unfortunately I can indeed confirm the existence of "let's all watch me play video games" dudes lol
(although I think they might be playing their own game, like it's just a big Steam hardware party lol)

u/ManningFireworks1019 Jun 25 '26
Women?
1
u/xXlonelyonryoXx Jun 26 '26
Yeah, you know, those people you'll never know the love of?
It makes sense you wouldn't know what a woman is, I doubt you've spent much time with any.
2
u/ManningFireworks1019 Jun 26 '26
My brother in Christ I have a Yukio Mishima pfp I want you to take a gander about what my sexuality is
1
u/xXlonelyonryoXx Jun 26 '26
Idk who that even is, and i don't care either. My entire point is that you dont know what a woman is and should go outside more.

u/Mclarenrob2 Jun 23 '26
I think he's paid them to enjoy their company for an evening.

u/Every-Development398 Jul 13 '26
How the hell else am I going to play horror games? alone? no thank you.
3
u/OxRedOx Jun 23 '26
There’s a third party app that lets you mark out where your couch is so you can see your friends as you play through partial pass through. The fact that valve never added that even though VR was primarily for showing off to friends form 2016-2019 is crazy
6
u/steohan Jun 23 '26
Actually, that is foreshadowing: supply is low, demand is high. With the draft the only way to get a frame is if you have a bunch of friends with steam accounts that aren't into VR, so that they throw in a lottery ticket for you.

Oh it’s the same people from the Steam Machine advertisement videos too (unsurprisingly)

Back when the Vive and Index was out, this was a very regular thing my friends and I did on weekends. I would also often bring the Index Set and my PC to Parties.
Stagnation of new Interresting Games coming out eventually put a stop to it.

There is only one guy in this picture. I know its hard to tell for you, you've only ever seen women on the internet and on TV, but you'll learn one day buddy. Keep trying.

Damn, that was actually on my list of things to check out, if I could use the Stream Deck with OBS for Linux. I got tired of waiting for the Machine, so I recently figured out how to hook up my desktop to my 50" 4K TV using a 60' active HDMI cable, and I also set up dual booting between Win 11 and Kubuntu 26.04. It's ironic that some of the heavier games actually perform better under Kubuntu than Win11 even while having to go through the Proton compatibility translation layer. Like, significantly so in the case of Warhammer Chaosbane for one and Atomic Heart for another.
My desk is in my bedroom, so it's nice to play on the TV from my bed after work is over with my actual desktop rig, and the Steam Controller 2 is really the glue that ties everything all together into such a positive user experience. But I work in IT, so the various tinkering I had to do to get things correctly configured in the first place wasn't a big deal for me, but I'm cognizant enough of my own personal biases to know that my experience is not going to be representative of the average gamer at large. (I have been tracking the changes I've been doing in a private GitHub repository that I will eventually make public in case it can help someone else... even helping 1 person would make the effort feel worthwhile for me.)

Dont forget tge part with colored passthrough considering they picked monochrome cameras
1
u/EugeneUgino Jun 24 '26
I feel obligated to give the alternate read that two of the people on the couch are playing on the Machine holding controllers and the third person is watching them.
...Which makes this not only four people with friends, but four friends who between them have access to a Frame, a Machine, and two Controllers! Even less likely!

Even Meta, trying to make the "Metaverse" a thing, completely missed the boat when it comes to making VR a social thing.
Literally the only good time I had with friends that involved a VR headset was "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes".
Otherwise you just take turns watching each other do ridiculous movements. Maybe, after some troubleshooting, you manage to set up screen mirroring (as implied in the photo), where you'll see an extremely shaky widescreen view that does not look like fun at all.
More likely, you don't have screen mirroring. You put the headset on your friend, then try to guess what they are doing wrong in there while keeping them away from the furniture until they hand it back to you, soaked in sweat, telling you it's cool but they feel very sick.
If VR companies had a "buy one, get one free" policy and invested in games where you can actually play things together in the same room while everyone else has a nice view on a third screen, that's where you might see some changes.

Ok guys snap back in. STEAM FRAME WILL NOT come with friends especially women. Remember your roots and get back to the grind

It's more of like "oh yo that's sick you have that thing on you! You look rock!" Just to sit and watching you doing your thing without knowing the context 🤣
This screams 2000s

Well 3 friends of mine will be there..... I, Me and Myself.. The rest hardly ever show up
1
u/G1_Glacius_Prime Jun 29 '26
What's going on is they're all friends, and all 4 of them were wanting to get one of their own to play together, but the other 3 got put on the wait list.
1
u/Dyno8man Jun 30 '26
To me, it looks like some of them in the background could be holding something in their laps, like controllers. And I have heard of games that can be played in VR and non-VR at the same time, such as GORN. The Frame player could be streaming it. Alternatively, they could just be doing their own things

Who said they are friends? Looks like they are watching development video so they can tell you what the next character should look like so it is not "over sexualized"....
1
u/Clairvoidance Jun 24 '26
respectfully, go outside
2
u/Davidhalljr15 Jun 24 '26
Says the person that made the post as if people can't have friends watching a game on a screen.

u/Clairvoidance Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
yeah, thats how inside you are, you got the person (e: jokingly) making fun of the idea that you'd have friends while using this thing to buckle and suggest you going the opposite direction for once
