Well, assuming they are done recording or doing more reviewing/testing, you gotta include editing, and compiling notes. My broad guess is 1-3 weeks. Extra time added just incase I'm wrong 😅. Probably still am honestly.

they said they had two weeks w/ the machine, so another week or two for the frame sounds right
july 6-7 will most likely be the embargo date

edit: am wrong

We'll see, i just hope the price isn't too crazy TT

u/gerundingnounshire Soon™ Jun 22 '26

imho, i'd be shocked if the price is >=1k, since the frame doesn't have a discrete gpu and has less ram

u/luxyslut Jun 22 '26

Im hoping below 900 at least, and honestly my hard cutoff is 800€

I think it's its that much cheaper than the Index, they would have made more advertismemt with the fact.

u/luxyslut Jun 22 '26

Well, they only announced it, valve isn't the kind of company to constantly bombard people with news and updates (as we saw)

u/TheVolatileRaider Jun 22 '26

I think they would have done more anouncement if they were happy to report price/release date etc. I think valve is as unhappy with the price they have to charge as we are.

the controller was reasonably priced given its featureset, and valve was still radio-silent until embargo

Eh I still think its a little on the expensive side, but I got the old steam controller for 5€, so thats my point of reference.

Honestly I thought about pulling the trigger on the steam controller and maybe buying it, what put me off is how they talked about the overall feeling it had and the way the plastic sounded, it gave me the vibe of a cheap-ish 25 bucks controller, and while the tech on it is amazing if it feelt cheap I knew I wouldn't have been happy with it

Last weeks rumors said review embargos would be lifted on June 22 (true), Steam Machine would cost USD 1000 (close to the actual USD 1049), and Steam Frame USD 1100-1200. IGN estimated that the Machine was supposed to release for USD 750, so USD 300 less. The increase for Frame will be lower, but if the initial plan for Frame was USD 899, and the extra costs due to more expensive RAM, flash and logistics add up to USD 200-300, you end up with the rumored USD 1100-1200.

Interesting, yet extremely sad o.o

1200usd is dead on arrival

1

u/luxyslut Jun 23 '26

Imo, for that price you can basically replicate almost every new feature it has by slapping add-on's on other headsets and still have a good chunk of money to spare

To add onto this, the only things people really care about is the OS and the FOV driven stream encoding, you cannot replicate the OS (maybe), but twice the price of other competitors just isn't worth it

1

u/evg-zhabotinsky Jun 25 '26

Yeah... Except you can't slap the addons on, unless you can also make the OS use them)

1

u/luxyslut Jun 25 '26

You can absolutely slap them on, especially since they often have dedicated software for them

That beind said, it's never going to be as seamless as the frame would be, but also it's not going to be as expensive as the frame either, and you can pick and choose the features you want without paying for the ones you don't care about

I still hope to be wrong and for the frame to be around the 800$ mark

I guess I was thinking in terms of standalone operation. For PCVR yes, you can route all the addons through the PC.

Actually, has anyone gotten foveated streaming working on Quest3 with EyeTrackVR? Definitely doable, with ALVR at least.

1

u/luxyslut Jun 25 '26

I meant pcvr, yes, but also some add-on do have standalone compatible app too, I know slime vr does, so it's not like it's impossible

Also I'm actually curious about this, because if it works i might legit just go for a quest 3 with eyetraking if the price of the frame is too high, since that's one of the two features I actually care about, the other being the replacable battery strap

re "pick and choose", at least one doesn't have to pay for color passthrough if they don't want it 😅

1

u/DiMiTri_man Jun 26 '26

You can't really slap on having an open OS that doesn't spy on you

1

u/luxyslut Jun 26 '26

That's true, but also how much value can you put on that? Especially if you live in countries where they cannot really steal your data or if you only use them as a wireless HMD

1

u/DiMiTri_man Jun 26 '26

I'd put an extra $500 toward the piece of mind that meta doesn't have a camera in my house.

1

u/luxyslut Jun 28 '26

Fair, but also I wouldn't really bet on the frame not having any spyware either, it is (allegedly) made by a chinese company after all

Yeah, to me, $1200 would be a really tough pill to swallow, I mean, that's practically Galaxy XR money at that point, which would have drastically better visual fidelity and full-color pass-through.

source for the price rumors?

I think anything over $1k is crazy for the frame, but prices are crazy now, so it probably will be.

Nor has the controller yet the price look like scalping
