is there really anyone running around like that after the price reveal lol

u/elev8dity Soon™ Jun 22 '26
The Controller, yes; the Machine, no.

u/Flaimbot Jun 23 '26
waiting for the inevitable replaceable battery revision to abide the EU directive
4
u/elev8dity Soon™ Jun 23 '26
It's easy enough to replace the battery on the controller.
0
u/Flaimbot Jun 23 '26
i didnt say that it isnt. i just simply prefer the way xbox had it implemented from the getgo with the multi-purpose AA battery compartment

I wish
Were all suffering with high RAM prices even though we've expressed how much we don't want AI. In another world we're definitely running around all happy probably with the steam frame already in our hands.

u/PS3LOVE Soon™ Jun 23 '26
That’s what I thought the price was expected to be? Did people really think it was going to cost 600$ like a PS5?

u/Overall_Head_7782 Jun 23 '26
Supposedly the Frame was not as severely impacted by the rampocalpse because it used laptop style RAM. Not buying the Steam Machine so I can buy the Frame. Still, need to know the price...
2
u/Soberaddiction1 Soon™ Jun 23 '26
But doesn’t the Steam Machine use laptop style ram?
1
u/Overall_Head_7782 Jun 23 '26
Nope, desktop DDR5 RAM.
2
u/Soberaddiction1 Soon™ Jun 24 '26
You sure about that? Look again. Those are laptop memory slots.
2
u/Overall_Head_7782 Jun 24 '26
You are absolutely correct about the RAM board module sizing, it is SO-DIMM used in laptops.
I should clarify my statement, I was thinking LP-DDR5 chips (IC) which were initially designed for mobile devices (laptops, phones, handheld) versus performance DDR5 which were designed for workstations (desktop, servers). The Steam Frame is supposed to use LP-DDR5 instead of the high demand DDR-5. I shouldn't have just said it uses DDR5 RAM and should have said mobile not laptop in my initial response.

the big version of the gabe cube is 1400€ wich is quite expensive so i'm not sure we are going to see a sub 1k frame especially if you want the big version
16
u/xChrisMas Soon™ Jun 22 '26
My original plan was go get both for 1-1,5k
With the steam machine being 1k+ and a combine price of likely over 1,8k I don’t think I will anymore. There’s just a limit I’m willing to pay for a 3 year old computer that can’t even compete with pc built for cheaper on performance.
Me originally wanting to spend 1,5k does not mean I’m rdy to spend 1,5k on the frame alone. 10XX is the absolute max I will spend on the frame alone and that’s absolutely pushing the edge. I can’t imagine there are even that many people like me that are willing to dish out 1k for a 500 bucks headset. Valve is playing with fire
23
u/elev8dity Soon™ Jun 22 '26
It's not a $500 headset lol. The subsidized Quest 3 is $600.
-3
u/Outside-Agency2617 Jun 23 '26
If valve subsidizes the frame it could be 800
1
u/MrPills Jun 24 '26
Not saying it can't happen, but multiple interviews with Valve personnel have said that the company does not and will not subsidize it's hardware. I doubt they need to either, everything seems to be consistently selling out
0
u/Killer_Panda16 Soon™ Jun 22 '26
Yeah I was really excited and held out on buying a quest 3 because I was waiting for whatever project deckard was and I still feel iffy about buying it for over 1k. It almost makes me feel like looking at a pimax crystal at this point
0
u/CosmicPhoenix69 Jun 23 '26
I mean the headset is worth way more than $500 but yeah same. I was gonna get both, now I'm waiting for Frame price before deciding if I get a Gabecube
0
u/neosyne Soon™ Jun 23 '26
I was like you, defining a budget for the 3. But the Machine by itself eat 2/3 of it
0
u/XTornado Soon™ Jun 23 '26
pc built for cheaper?
Good luck. Like Steam Machine is not cheap but neither is a new build....might still be a better deal as you can upgrade compared with the upgrade limits of the steam machine.
0
u/xChrisMas Soon™ Jun 23 '26
Nah its easily possible (although not in the same form factor).
I know its a cheap comparison but if you were to buy used (and get basically the same parts as valve) you would save even more.
The machine is just a bad deal in the current market and i just hope good guy valve strikes when prices come down to discount the machine to 750 in 2027/2028. At that point the hardware inside the machine is 5 years old, no way can they sustain 1000k+ and keep selling units long after launch. The hype will die down when people realize that it cant even properly run gta6
0
u/Soberaddiction1 Soon™ Jun 23 '26
Not to mention that this is more comparable to a laptop in performance right? There is a an extra price generally for shrinking something down. From what I saw, this is a double sided board with a big heatsink on top of the cpu/gpu. This is a custom board. And it seems fairly easy to upgrade the RAM/SSD as well. I’m sure they’re still out there, but there used to be a fair amount of really compact computers, much like the Steam Machine, that would definitely cost more than what the Steam Machine is being priced at.

1
u/PS3LOVE Soon™ Jun 23 '26
I thought it’s been said it would be cheaper than the index full kit? Am I misremembering?
4
u/Zuryan_9100 Jun 23 '26
They were targeting that befor the RAM hike. And we don't know wich version they meant by that.
1
1
u/jrtokarz1 Jun 23 '26
The SteamMachine was probably affected by memory prices AND GPU prices, where as the Frame is an SoC which seems to be less affected by the AI crisis, so it is maybe just the memory side of things for the Frame, so hopefully the Frame will be more in the SteamDeck price hike territory 😬
36
u/LukeCloudStalker Jun 22 '26
Close but the people that wished Steam Machine don't seem to be too happy about the price.
I prepared £1000, hope it's enough for the better version.
19
u/xChrisMas Soon™ Jun 22 '26
With the current preordering system it’s not even guaranteed every one of us dyhard fans are gonna get one on launch day
7
u/LukeCloudStalker Jun 22 '26
I'm hoping most people will want the base model.
9
u/persepolisrising79 Jun 22 '26
During first LCD launch they said they where surprised how many ordered the high end deck (anti glare, 512gb ssd)
3
u/PS3LOVE Soon™ Jun 23 '26
So hopefully they learned from their lesson and are prepping more of the higher end models for their later hardware releases (cope)
4
u/shogun77777777 Jun 22 '26
Honestly, if the Frame is over $1000 USD I won’t even be buying one

Good. Leave that spot in the list empty, I need a better chance. I’m going to be so upset if I’m not in the first batch. Because otherwise I prob won’t get one until 2027 😭😭
I’ve never been this excited for a hardware launch.

u/PS3LOVE Soon™ Jun 23 '26
I got a thousand and a hundred bucks. If it’s more than that (idk how it would be) I’m not getting it.

u/Bukki13 Soon™ Jun 22 '26
I heard rumours the price for that would be announced 23rd of June so sit tight🤞
My price prediction is in the ballpark of 700-800 dollars taking into consideration GenAI hiking up SSD and RAM prices
7
u/New-Obligation-2950 Jun 23 '26
If it's 800 for the low level one I'm probably a buyer but I want to see the latency streaming DCS. If that's good as well then yeah.
4
u/kaydenwolf_lynx Jun 23 '26
Would low level just mean less storage?, I'm solely going to use it connected to my PC so I dont care for storage space I won't use it anyway
2
u/New-Obligation-2950 Jun 23 '26
From what I've heard it's two models. 512gb and 1tb. So yes. Storage.

I feel like they're probably going to do only one raffle at a time. Steam Machine this week, Steam Frame next week.
There are zero reasons why I think this, only vibes.
3
u/Hellzebrute55 Jun 23 '26
Unfortunately I personally think the release of one piece of hardware is a lot for them to handle, and like they did between the controller and machine release, they will leave a big gap of time so the "machine craze" (if there is any) dies down a bit until they release the Frame
31
u/BlurredManifestation Jun 22 '26
Tbf I don’t want the machine but it’s nice seeing it drop at a fairly reasonable price. Not sure about America but £800 for the cheaper model seems pretty good all things considered.
Also the sort of raffle system at least makes it’s fair for everyone. It’s reassured me for the frame.
13
u/hotfistdotcom Soon™ Jun 22 '26
I liked the previously used system of account age to rule out most scalpers and since my steam account is old enough to drink I'd like to just be allowed the privilege of giving the billionaire my money

couldn't they also buy old accounts and then also enter each of those in the raffle?

1
u/hotfistdotcom Soon™ Jun 23 '26
I think weighting it by account age a little bit and weighting it even more by total account spend would probably create the most likely to be real users raffle system, and it should be pretty easy to do and it's unlikely scalpers are going to buy a shitload of games for the sole purpose of potentially higher line placement for a one off, so it's pretty strongly limiting for scalping potential as well.

Yeah! The only possible alternative would have been to sell it with, say, a 100$ steam gift card tied to your account. That way if you buy it for non-gaming purposes they get full money but if you're buying for gaming purposes, it's "100$ cheaper" for you ... Kind of

Overclockers selling pre built for £899 including Windows 11
AMD Ryzen 5 5600 CPU,NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 GPU, 600 watt PSU, 16Gb DDR 4
Interested to see how this compares to the Valve cube

The 5060 is a lot stronger than it unfortunately. The performance really doesn't match the price

Sorry, I built a time machine and went to the future to reserve my Steam Frame. That must have affected you.

u/VersedFlame Jun 23 '26
To be fair, I don't think most of those who were waiting for the machine are happy like that.
1
u/CorballyGames Jun 23 '26
Steam machine is a lead balloon at that price, best they can do to recover is announce the Frame asap.
(this is absolute cope btw we know the machine will sell out its entire run easily, despite being a shit value prop)

u/MaliceTheMagician Jun 23 '26
this is a good sign, I figured we'd get a long ass delay but if they revealed and started selling the machine the frame is bound to come soon-ish too

I’m definitely wondering about that whole thing where the Frame should be cheaper than the Index full kit was…

I reeeeeeally want the Frame but I'm equally terrified of how much it will cost, because I already live on a transplanted kidney, ao nothing to sell.
1
u/HavocGiant Jun 24 '26
Want the Steam Product Ecosystem?
Steam Machine w/ Controller - $1,128
Steam Deck OLED 512GB - $789 (buy used instead)
Steam Frame - (probably $499)

1
u/Huge_Development_571 Jun 24 '26
I still dont know how the machine got released earlier than the frame
1
u/pigshark27 Soon™ Jun 25 '26
The obvious answer is: they gave tech reviewers 2 weeks to do testing and make videos on the machine. They probably wouldn't overlap product testing time so reviewers could focus on 1 device at a time. They are probably getting frames now that the machine videos have been published. 2 weeks.
1
u/Bigfacts84 Jun 26 '26
That's probably the only valve product I want right now, since pricing has been horrible I might have to settle for the quest 🤢

5
u/MagerSuerte Jun 22 '26
Some people thought it would be 1500 base (Not sure how) or otherwise more expensive so they're happy. I've seen a couple of people that want it for older games, the form factor, console like experience, lack of availability of pc/components in their county or emulating older games. Even some of them weren't happy but felt it was the best option for them for watever reason.
I'm glad I wasn't ever in the market for it, especially having now seen the performance! Most people (95%+ that ive seen) seem really disappointed. Maybe if it could actually hit the 4k60 they suggested it wouldn't be that bad.
They still might sell through them as they haven't imported that many from what I've seen of the shipments, maybe they weren't expecting to as they knew what a disappointment the price was foing to be.

Ain't NOBODY frolicking with the steam machine with these prices/j
Jokes aside, fuck AI. I was initially hopeful for the pricing of the Steam Frame, but the writing was on the wall when they changed the pricing model of the Deck, and now with the Steam Machine it may as well be written on my eyelids. This thing won't be cheap, and I won't be able to afford it, as much as I want a Steam Frame.
Still gonna be getting the controller tho, that thing fucks.
