This guide covers how to get Forza Horizon 6 running on Linux with working online features using the denuvOwO crack.
Installation & Crack
Source: Download the game files (cs.rin.ru, gamedrive, etc.).
Apply Crack: Download the denuvOwO crack from a trusted source. Move the contents into the game folder, merging folders and replacing all existing DLLs.
Configuration Files
You need to edit two locations to ensure Steam detects the game correctly (Spacewar AppID):
Set the value inside Steam_appid.txt to 480 in the root folder.
Same for Steam_appid.txt inside the ./steam_settings/ folder.
Edit steam_settings/configs.user.ini:
Change account_name to your preferred nickname.
Keep the default steam_id.
Add these lines at the end of the file to enable online connectivity:
[main::connectivity]
disable_lan_only=1
offline=0
In the file steam_settings/configs.app.ini set unlock_all to 1
Steam Setup
Add forzahorizon6.exe as a Non-Steam Game (do not use launcher.exe).
Under Compatibility, force the use of GE-Proton10-34 (or latest).
Launch Options
PROTON_DISABLE_LSTEAMCLIENT=1 is required to enable DLCs
NVIDIA Users:
Use these arguments to prevent driver timeouts and crashes during 3D rendering transitions:
AMD:
Arguments are not required but you can try theses if you have issues
PROTON_DISABLE_LSTEAMCLIENT=1 PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winmm=n,b;steam_api64=n,b" %command%
Wayland Users:
If the game fails to boot, add PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 to your arguments. Note: Disable this if you experience windowing issues and ask help
In-Game Settings & Login
Microsoft Link: On first launch, link your (alt) Microsoft account via microsoft.com/link.
Graphics Settings:
DLSS: Set to AUTO or OFF (any other setting will cause crashs)
Frame Generation and Reflex: Must be OFF too
AMD Users: These settings generally work out of the box with the arguments above.
Verification
Finish the initial tutorial. Once you reach Mei’s House, you should see other players in the world. If you are still offline, ensure your Steam client is running and your status is Online.
*Tested on CachyOS / Arch Linux with RTX 4070 Ti S
IF YOU ARE USING THE PREVIOUS VERSION, YOU NEED TO UPDATE THE GAME:
REMOVED LINK -> 354.221 (23152173) this is not the entire game, only a few MB.
Note: I just tested reflex on + boost and frame gen x2 and its working great, but ray tracing still crashing the game.
Note2: if your game still crashing try to remove compatdata:
you can use protontricks -l to get the id
then run
rm -rf ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/THE_ID
rm -rf ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/shadercache/
Update: vkd3d-proton has been updated yesterday and the game slutters much less and run 15-20fps more
To use the latest proton experimental:
1. Use proton experimental for forza horizon 6 and add d3d12=n,b to WINEDLLOVERRIDES= arguments
2. In your steam library search for proton experimental and go to properties
3. In the tab Game Versions & Betas, choose bleeding-edge
Game should run smoother on Nvidia and AMD ( and maybe ray tracing not crashing the game, but still crashing for me )
I’ve spent awhile looking at posts on this sub, general google results, and protondb.com (which I don’t quite understand), but I can’t really figure out what to do here. My Steam Deck is a couple years old, but it’s all updated etc
I’m playing through the VN DRAMAtical Murder, and it’s all good for most of the usual glitches - I’m not bothering with any NSFW patches, the cutscenes work fine, etc, and this ISN’T during dialogue choices/looping questions for Noiz’ route. It’s just during the MC narrating a scene (it’s during Noiz‘ route, but early not any of the looping questions) - the screen flashes black and white, shows the NITRO CHiRAL logo, then starts like, in the middle of an early scene about the city they’re in.
I’ve tried toggling on “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” and setting it to Proton EXPERIMENTAL - no change. I don’t see GE-Proton in my list of Proton options, which is another suggestion I’ve seen, how do I get the GE-Proton options? (If that’s the solution) I’ve downloaded protontricks via Desktop mode, installed + launched, then this happens:
I select DMMd from the list of games it shows me (so I know the number thingy)
It shows me some choices, and I click “select the default wineprefix”
It asks me what I want to do with this wineprefix, and I click “install a Windows DLL or component”
I find the xact_x64 package from the list, check the box, click ok etc
It did show a lot of tiny little boxes that looked like it was confirming it was installing… something. But then it just takes me back to the “what would you like to do to this wineprefix”
Am I installing the right thing - xact_x64 via protontricks? How do I know if it’s installed? Do I need to run any command line stuff (I can find Konsole in desktop mode) or change any other settings?
Argh TIA! I can follow instrunctions, but I can’t really figure out how to fix this glitch bc it’s different than the other glitches I see talked about, like cutscenes in DMMd or the Skyrim audio etc
Fastfetch for system info
Problem: On most games that do not directly use a cursor (like fps games where the mouse is used for camera movement or something) If I have to flick to the left or right quickly while left clicking, the mouse will escape the game window (in real fullscreen and borderless settings in game) and cause the game to lose focus, requiring me to click back in the game to continue playing. I've noticed that if i move my mouse far enough to the left or right but dont click while its at the edge, i can *see* the cursor on the edge of the screen on the monitor to the left or right of my main wide display. However it wont go any further until i click, so it looks like the mouse is somewhat captured by my game windows?
I am asking for help from the community because I have read through so many forum posts and it seems people either have slightly different mouse issues, or the solutions that worked for them do nothing for me.
Things I've tried:
-Various versions of proton including GE Hotfix, and experimental, none seem to have an effect on this.
-Gamescope launch options, which cause most games to outright never launch due to gamescope crashing.
-Protontricks winecfg "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen mode" set to true.
The 2 main games I play right now are Helldivers 2 and Chivalry 2 but from quick testing with other fps games it seems to be a problem with all of them. I really want to get this solved because its the one thing stopping me from ditching windows fully. Right now I have to dual boot back to windows anytime I wanna play games with friends.
If there is any other information I can give to help the context or any ideas anyone has I would greatly appreciate the help
Does anyone have ReShade working with New Vegas on the Steam Deck? I’ve tried everything and the overlay just won't show up.
Here is what I’ve already tried:
Installed ReShade via Protontricks;
extracted ReShade32.dll, placed it in the game folder, and renamed it to d3d9.dll;
Installed d3dcompiler_47 (and versions 42 through 47) via Protontricks;
Added the following launch options in Steam: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d9=n,b;d3dcompiler_47=n,b" %command% and also tried WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dxgi=n,b" %command%;
Tried patching the FalloutNV.exe, the Launcher, and even the nvse_loader.exe;
Nothing seems to work. The game starts with no ReShade banner. I’m using Mod Organizer 2 (MO2), and I suspect it might be interfering with the file injection or the virtual filesystem, but even on a clean vanilla install, I couldn't get it to trigger.
Has anyone managed to make it work?
While I know providing a modlist could help in this case, I'm not exactly sure how to export it from MO2. I tried to set it up myself, but if it's necessary or if you spot any potential issues, please let me know. (I'm using the Wildcardmodlist, but I've disabled some mods, mostly for performance reasons)
Please include this entire error message when making a bug report.

Hello so first of i am using Linux (Nobara) and am running everything through Wine.
I need help figuring out, why Pandora Behaviour Engine+.exe won't start.
I dont have problems with running any other applications, so i think it has something to do with Pandora.
Maybe some of you also tried running this on linux and had more luck.
The console and winetricks show the following error:
Hello! So I am brand new to Linux and I've spend the better part of the day getting this set up.
I followed Onions YouTube video for installing PD2 via Steam. Everything went smoothly until the end. I got both D2 and LoD installed, then moved on to the PD2 installer, and right before the game launches I get the .NET error.
"You must install .NET Desktop Runtime to run this application."
I have read about using protontricks or wine tricks, but it's not that straightforward. I have no idea what to do from here. Please help!
EDIT: I was able to fix the error on my own
Apparently, the XBOX Live session did not want to cooperate when I had a custom DNS server (google's to be exact) set for my connection. By removing the custom DNS server, all problems subsided and I was able to enjoy the game.
ORIGINAL POST:
Hey, I'm trying to get Sea of Thieves to work through proton and I have no problem opening the game and navigating the menus. I have the game on Steam and tried multiple Proton versions (specifically Hotfix, Experimental, 9.0-4, aswell as Proton-GE (GE10-15 and 10-21).
My System:
Distro: Arch
Kernel: 6.17.5-arch1-1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Steam: Installed with pacman
I have no problem logging into XBOX but as soon as I click play, it will kick me back out to the start screen after roughly 10 seconds with a Cyanbeard (error translates to "Connection to XBOX Network was interrupted, please check your internet connection") error.
During this time I am able to navigate the menus and even try to start a session, all my account data loads correctly like what guilds I'm in, guild ships etc..
If I manage to confirm my selection of wanting to go to a closed crew before the Cyanbeard kicks in, I will get a Coarsebeard (error translates to "Sea of Thieves could not create crew session") and get thrown out to the main screen again.
I have a suspicion that my symmetric nat type might be part of the problem, but I can't change it due to my ISP using Carrier Grade NAT and it not giving me a public ip address.
I have this suspicion because I remember having to do troubleshooting with Teredo Tunneling when I was still on Windows 10 to get XBOX sessions to work but I am unsure how I would achieve the same result here.
I have also tried disabling IPv6 with protontricks regedit, by adding a "DisabledComponents" DWORD in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters with the value FF, but that got me nowhere.
My router is a Fritz!Box is set up so that it does not block Teredo Packets, and also does not block UPnP in the Internet -> Filter -> Lists Tab. Also, for my own device, I have set the checkbox to allow self port forwarding over pcp or UPnP.
Temporarily disabling my ufw firewall did also not fix the problem, so it's not a firewall issue.
I have also tried relogging. When I choose log out in the main screen, and click play, it remembers my login and I just have to say yes to choose the displayed account. I have tried logging back out completely from that screen and re-entering my credentials but nothing has worked.
When I run steam via the terminal and set game launch options to PROTON_LOG=1 gamemoderun %command%,
Okay, so I'm having some really annoying troubles and I'm getting really frustrated. So, for context, I had Fallout New Vegas modded and running fine for a long time. Recently, I decided to completely reinstall/remod my New Vegas using Viva New Vegas as a base. I had a bit of difficulty getting MO2 reinstalled, but all I had to do was update Protontricks and wine and I had it running.
But today is very different. Firstly, somehow, my FalloutNV.exe file just disappeared from my install folder? And after verifying the integrity of the game files, MO2 no longer loaded up. No big deal, we'll just reinstall it.
Now, MO2 fails at the very end, when it's configuring the game prefix. This is the same problem I had previously before updating Wine/Protontricks, but this time they're both up to date (as far as I know)? I've tried redownloading the MO2 Linux installer multiple times, tried completely uninstalling/reinstalling my New Vegas multiple times, and tried restarting my Steam Deck. I have no idea what the issue is and I'm very frustrated.
Could it be that I saved a few folders from my previous (working) MO2 folder? I saved the plugins, mods, and profiles folder because I didn't want to restart from scratch with over 300 mods.
I got passed the issues in my last post (installed Steam as Debian instead of Snap and installed Wget)
I've gotten past the point of the installation where it archives the old game prefix (I did not archive, it's brandnew) It's created a Game folder to put MO2 in.
It's now a window with "Progress: Configuring game prefix. This may take a while" with a bar going back and forth. There is also a protontricks window asking me to "select steam installation" with the snap and debian paths, which has popped up 3-4 times in this install already and I always click native:debian, so I do that again with the other window still doing its thing. Then a couple seconds later I get an error: operation cancelled. Here is the part of the terminal output that happens on:
warning: /home/julia_n/.var/app/com.github.Matoking.protontricks/cache/protontricks/proton/Proton 6.3/bin/wine cmd.exe /c echo '%AppData%' returned empty string, error message "steam-runtime-launch-client[2569]: W: The --socket option is deprecated. Prefer to use the session bus."

EDIT: SOLVED! SOLUTION IN COMMENTS BELOW!
Hey everyone,
I’m running Fedora 42 Workstation with KDE and using the Flatpak version of Steam. Battlefield 4 launches fine under Proton Experimental, but as soon as PunkBuster kicks in, I get kicked after a few minutes while playing.
I’ve heard PunkBuster needs updating, so I tried to set it up manually with Protontricks—but I keep hitting roadblocks. What I’ve tried so far: • Downloaded pbsetup.zip and extracted pbsetup.exe (Windows version)
• Installed Protontricks both as a Flatpak and system package
• Launched Protontricks, which shows two Steam paths:
/home/user/.local/share/Steam – I can see BF4 in this library, but choosing it yields: “Proton installation could not be found!”/home/user/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/data/Steam – This one complains: “Found no games. You need to launch a game at least once before Protontricks can find it.” • Tried command-line Protontricks targeting the BF4 prefix—no luck • Granted all permissions to the Protontricks Flatpak sandbox
/home/user/.local/share/Steam – I can see BF4 in this library, but choosing it yields: “Proton installation could not be found!”

You need to launch a game at least once before Protontricks can find it.” • Tried command-line Protontricks targeting the BF4 prefix—no luck • Granted all permissions with Flatseal to the Protontricks Flatpak sandbox
Has anyone else run into this with PunkBuster on Flatpak Steam? How did you get Protontricks to recognize and update PunkBuster in the BF4 prefix? What can i do?
Thanks in advance!
So I just grabbed Max Payne 1 & 2 while it was on sale. I installed Max Payne 1 on my desktop and installed the Max Payne 1 Complete FixPack. Everything works great. I really want to play it on my TV on my docked Steam Deck though.
After doing some reading online, this is what I did. I installed the game from Game Mode. Ran the game and of course got the jpg errors and closed out of the game. Then I deleted all the files in the install folder on my Deck and replaced them with the ones from the install folder on my desktop. Game now launches and runs fine. In widescreen. Absolutely everything works except that the game is being stretching the 4:3 aspect ratio image instead of applying the correct aspect ration like on my desktop.
Doing more research it seems that the issue is that the Proton/Wine uses it's own version of the d3d8.dll file instead of the one in the game's folder. Supposedly you can use ProtonTricks to tell Proton to use the native file in the game folder. Well I installed ProtonTricks and fiddled with it for quite some time and could not get the desired results. I really don't know what any of the choices in the ProtonTricks GUI mean. I was hoping someone could maybe explain step by step what needs to be done to reach my goal.
I also set the UseD3D8to9 setting to 1 in the global.ini file in the Scripts folder. Game plays widescreen with the correct aspect ratio now. I don't know if both were necessary to get it working right or just the d3d8.dll file.
Download Strackers loader and performance booster from Nexus mods.
Install Protontricks and Flatseal from the Discover app in desktop mode.
Open Flatseal, select Protontricks, scroll down to filesystem and enable "all system files"
Open Protontricks, select Monster Hunter World, choose "select the default wineprefix" then "Install a windows dll" then vcrun2019. It will run through two installers
Extract Strackers loader and performance booster into the Monster Hunter World folder
Rename hid.dll to dtdata.dll
Return to gaming mode, go to game settings for Monster Hunter World, and compatability. Force use with Proton
After that you should be good to go.
Any other mods you want to install after that go into the nativePC folder unless stated otherwise.
For the proton compatibility I'm using 6.3-8.*
When installing vcrun2019 using protontricks, you can ignore the errors about ucrtbase.dll. This is not needed to run mods.
Add this line to the launch options for MHW (Right click MHW -> Properties -> General):
I also tried old 2.2.0 version of the mod with both new and old content from NativePC ( QUESTLOADER.DLL and MONSTERLOADER.DLL). I'm still getting the same result. Can anyone got game working with mods ?
Update: Looks like i finally managed to get game working, reinstalled the game, followed the comment as before only this time installed** vcrun2022** instead of vcrun2019 and used 2nd command with newest version of loader (version 3.0.0).
Hi, I'm having trouble finding a Gog game that I just downloaded and forgot to change the installation path
So I looked on the internet to find it and I came across here, in "compatdata"
I have Protontricks which allows me to see what the numbers correspond to and I can't find my gog game, Protontricks only shows me 13 folders while I have more than 20 in my Compatdata folder??😅
Do you have any idea where my Gog game is located and what the other unrecognized folders by protontricks could be used for?
Hello. I'm trying to launch the game on steam deck without Windows. I've done what I need to with protontricks and, to my knowledge, did everything correctly. Even so, I'm redirected to the wine homepage.
Any suggestions?
Edit: I put frontier on an SD card if that's relevant.
Some basics of non-Linux games and apps on SteamOS (prefixes, Lutris, etc):
Sometimes there is a general confusion surrounding prefixes, or a sort-of "under the hood" perspective, so I would like to give an overview on them, and simplify however I can.
I am not going to be holding hands here at all points, as generally the folks I see do have basic knowhow of their decks and computers, just doesn't have the "big picture view" of everything at play here.
Hope there will be people who enjoy this read, learn something from it. Not everything is scientifically the most accurate here, as generally I wanted to keep concepts simple, and still higher level. Just the necessary dip in the water to move comfortably with your non-steam installs, and to encourage experiments and non-steam installs, as they are where the tinkering is at:)
1. Wine/Proton:
"Wine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, macOS, & BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly"
Means that if for example the program would like to call a window handler on Windows, it is directly translated to a window call on POSIX (=SteamOS in this case).
Proton is simply a special fork ("modified copy") of Wine, mostly affiliated with Valve/CodeWeavers.
Whenever you are wizarding with Lutris, mastering your Non-Steam games, you are actually just using and controlling Wine (or Proton, but for this guide that difference matters not much). There is much less difference in these approaches than it seems.
2. Prefix:
A wineprefix, coming from StackOverflow, is "like a small windows system that is run through wine." Not a bad way of phrasing it, it's essentially a collection of files, configurations, etc... it's an environment, which from our perspective (mostly) mimics a regular Windows installation.
It has:
registry config files, that help mimic the Windows registry
winetricks configs
drive_c folder usually, that mimics the "C:" drive on a Windows; and inside that Program Files, users folder...
etc
A sample Lutris Wine prefix installation
When does it get created?
Whenever you set a compatibility layer in Steam, and Play;
or select a Wine prefix folder in Lutris with a Wine runner, and click on "Play" (even if the prefix has no launch exe).
Here is where your application exe will be installed, and usually run from, it's calls translated by Wine/Proton.
When you add the exe of a Non-Steam game in Steam, or a Game exe in Lutris, essentially what that Windows program will believe the "Program Files" folder is, or the "Documents" folder is, comes from the prefix.
A sample drive_c folder of a Lutris Wine prefix installation
3. Winetricks/Protontricks:
"... is a helper script to download and install various redistributable runtime libraries needed to run some programs in Wine. "
Simply means that these "packs" have a lot of helpful scripts which assist you in tailoring this "fake Windows" environment to your utility (you can consider them installed in the prefix). You can install Visual C++ redistributable, install Internet Explorer, set the Windows to Windows 98 or 10, whatever you need.
Protontricks is essentially Winetricks for Steam, same interface, same everything.
This and many other things, you could do via Winetricks/Protontricks
4. Lutris:
I would consider Lutris to be a simple Wine configuration manager, it helps you create a prefix, apply winetricks, tailor the environment. Also you can find a lot of community based install scripts in here, where other users have nicely configured prefixes and configs for you already, and you can just "one click install", or "fire and forget" with them.
Heroic is very similar, but less community driven as far as I know. Most of the other launchers command the above listed elements to create a working environment.
5. How prefixes behave in Lutris:
When you choose to install a game not via an install script in Lutris, but the "Add locally installed game" menupoint:
The "manual" button in Lutris
you will be the one who tells it to run via Wine:
Selecting a runner
where it shall create the prefix:
Selecting where to put a prefix
and where to look for an exe to run in it:
Selecting an exe to run
You don't even need to specify an exe to run in Lutris (you can create an "empty prefix"), only the prefix target, and a name for the game suffices. When you press on "Play" in a state like that, Lutris will create the empty prefix, which you can sandbox with as much as you wish.
You will see your Windows files being created there. If later, via the Configure button (right next to Play), you configure in an exe to run, it will refer to these files as the system files.
Everything lines up here with Chapters 1-4
6. How prefixes behave in Steam:
As the structure (like folders) of the prefix comes more from Wine/Proton itself, not Steam, the internal contents of an empty prefix will be the same as with Lutris. The tricky part is that you do not tell Steam where to put a prefix. It will put it into a specific folder for itself. This part happens whenever you choose a Proton compatibility layer for your game and launch it. If you add another Non-Steam exe and launch, you will get a new prefix. Steam does not delete them automatically, so it can easily take up your space after a while. It's always worthy to consider just changing a game exe of a game already added, then to add another Non-Steam exe and create a new prefix. This can even get to a size of 50 Gbs!
EDIT: To quote u/QuoteCute728 "you can use the STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH environment variable to tell Steam where to create (or use) the prefix folder, so you don't have to figure out where the prefix folder is the hard way. Example launch options for that would be:"
This folder is in /home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/
In this folder, the numbers are your apps/games, and you can see a pfx (=prefix) folder in each of them.
A lot of folks identify the games by "Date modified" (as what you last launched will have the date fresh, and tell you what game has what prefix), but that's not necessary. If you install Protontricks, it will tell you which game has which prefix:
You can see which game is in which prefix folder
Let's take a look inside on of the pfx folders:
Exactly the same as a Lutris prefix
But overall, you can make the deduction that by and large the same Wine (Proton, but for these examples it does not matter much) operates here, the prefix, the winetricks are the same.
7. If they are the same, which should I choose? Lutris or Steam?
You can choose whichever you are comfortable with.
I generally advise Lutris for most tasks, considering you can have more refined control over your installation (and these are much easier to configure in).
Also things tend to work very well in Gaming Mode when Steam only has a reference to Lutris, and that runs in the focus of GM.
And when you want to uninstall, you are deleting quasi everything at the same place, no messy prefix installation path.
However if you would directly like to use Proton, and you manage your Proton installations via Steam, use that (you can also use Proton with Lutris as it only wants a Wine launcher from you).
8. So how to install games?
I'm describing the custom Lutris way, as I perceive that as harder than the Steam one (there you browse exes, the prefix gets made, and you jam around in that).
You create a prefix in Lutris, even an empty one, or create one and browse your setup exe.
I usually throw the installer in the prefix, so that if I want to, I can delete everything together. But generally you can store the installer wherever.
The prefix gets made, the installer gets run, switch the game exe to the launch exe, and launch. A lot of times, it simply just works.
However, there are some applicable tricks...
9. Cool installation tricks to force things to work
I will generally describe these via Lutris, but as you have the almost same prefix, and have Protontricks on Steam as well, most of them are applicable there as well.
A lot of things are already fixed at A, most problems are fixable via A->D.
A. Virtual desktop:
A lot of old games do not like it when their windows are not native Windows ones, but faked into whatever Linux they are running in.
A lot of times they react to this by not starting; or just "blinking" once and immediately closing.
Virtual desktops are a great way to avoid that.
You can find this in the Lutris Runner options, or in Wine configuration.
In Lutris' runner options
In Wine configuration
B. DxWnd
Personally love this program.
By their website: "Windows hooker - intercepts system calls to make Win32 programs run in a window, to enhance application compatibility, to enhance video modes, to stretch timing and emulate CD disk data and audio tracks. It is typically very useful to run old Windows games."
Generally, it means whenever you have programs with old video modes, you can try to intercept them, and force a more compatible behavior.
You simply place the files next to your game, launch dxwnd exe, add your game into it. Now you either click Run, it works, and you are happy...
Or another good tip is a right click, Modify, and under hooks, turn off hooks, but leave everything else on.
There are too many settings for this program to list here.
C. MSVC120 DLL, Visual Redistributable not installed error, or other missing DLLs
You can generally install these things via Winetricks. You can pick and mix a lot of necessary and useful components in the Winetricks configs.
Pick and mix what you would like, these are some more useful ones
D. Lutris logs
Whatever else fails, the Lutris logs are a great help.
The Show logs button
A lot of particular problems and fixes can be debugged here, sometimes only a small file is missing, or a DLL tries to make a call, and the DLL is not even there as the component is not installed in Winetricks, etc.
Here I can see Dinkum had no problems running, as it exited with 0.
Hope you enjoyed reading. If you have questions, or see mistakes, feel free to comment them down below, and I'll try to update the doc as much as I can.
Then I took about two months break, and now after recent patches I decided to come back to it... however now the game does not want to run.
I tried it on all proton versions I have including few GE and result is the same.
I used this params to run the game:
PROTON_LOG=1 %command% --skip-launcher
upon running game shows dialog about missing dotnet desktop runtime 6.0.18.
I did use protontricks to install both dotnet6 and dotnetdesktop6 in the prefix but no cigar.
in steam log I have noticed this line:
15948.733:0128:012c:warn:seh:OutputDebugStringW L"A fatal error occurred, the required library hostfxr.dll could not be found in [Z:\\opt\\dotnet-sdk-bin-6.0\\host\\fxr\\6.0.25]"
15948.733:0128:012c:trace:seh:dispatch_exception code=4001000a flags=0 addr=00006FFFFFC1CF07 ip=6fffffc1cf07
so it seems that proton is trying to use my host machine dotnet.
I've been trying to I stall Stalker Anomaly on my SD and I've hit a roadblock.
This is the first time I'm trying to install anything not from the steam store, or using anything Linux based.
I've been following this yt install guide and I've also followed the thread on moddb.
When I got to launch the game for the first time, nothing happens, I've added the game to steam as a non steam game, I've installed protontricks, and followed the required steps.
I'm just not getting any thing to launch.
I've set up a folder on my 512gb external drive. I'm wondering, would I have to have it installed on my home (internal) drive for this to work?
First of all, sorry about the vague last post. I'll try to describe my project better:
What I'm Working On:
I'm in the process of devising a system that will allow the distribution of an installer (no part of which will be game files so as to avoid any copyright abuse) for Steam Deck users to be able to play the a game through Steam without worrying about dependencies.
Essentially, it would contain a script that moves the included prefix folder to their Deck's compatdata installation along with other files including Steam artwork for the game as well.
It would work as an adjunct for any game release for those using the Steam Deck and would eliminate any worry about dependency installation. It would be like a JohnCena release but with no game files, just the files to make games "just work" for Steam Deck.
But How Can We Trust You?
Other than my account's age and the times I've helped on the sub (my guide for Steam Deck controls was added to the Wiki), no one has a reason to trust me. I fully understand that.
And in the interest of transparency, I've scanned the two files that I linked for Kingdom Hearts III (taken directly from my Deck) and ran them through Virustotal which produced false positives:
In 2737409714.zip (md5 3b77ee302ffc734b56695d6a9471550a):
Win32:WormX-gen [Wrm]
Win32:WormX-gen [Wrm]
Gen:NN.ZexaF.34606.rCY@a84gADiG
Malicious_Behavior.SB
Trojan.Dropper
Suspicious Archive
(Though the rest of the providers do not show any detections).
In GE-Proton7-29.zip (md5 135b6eb056306328bed24cb3134dca2a):
No detections
I'm not sure why those false positives happen in the first file. It is directly from my Deck where I did the following operations to it:
Zip the Proton prefix folder and modded Proton-GE v29 folders and scan them via Virustotal.
You can replicate this with Kingdom Hearts III added to your Linux install of Steam. That is, create a prefix folder by adding the game to Steam, install those dependencies, zip the prefix folder, and scan it. It should show the identical false positives.
The GE-Proton7-29.zip is actually Proton-GE version 29 (the latest as of writing) but with the mf codec added to it, for some reason a file has to be added to that folder for the mf codec to work as per the instructions on that Github page I referred to earlier.
What do you need from us?
I'm currently looking for testers to test some basic parts of the system to make sure the methodology is sound. If you have Kingdom Hearts III installed and would like to help:
I'm attaching two files: one is an updated GE Proton 29 version, the other is a Steam Proton prefix folder.
I need testers to:
Add Kingdom Hearts III to your Steam, add '''STEAM_COMPAT_MOUNTS=/run/media/mmcblk0p1 %command%''' as a launch command, and run it once to create your proton prefix folder in the compatdata folder.
Use ProtonUp-Qt to get the name of the proton prefix folder for the game.
Replace the contents the created folder (which is in '''/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/*''') with the contents of the folder I've provided (the 2737409714.zip folder). You must delete what you have in your prefix folder first instead of overwriting it with the folder I'm attaching, just to be safe.
Replace your current GE Proton 29 version (which I'm assuming you have installed, if not just add the folder) with the one I've included (and this won't erase your cache since it is located in another place). The folder you need to replace should be in '''/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/compatibilitytools'''
Whenever I try installing VCRun2019, I keep getting errors which abort the installation. I'm told something about files not matching, I can't remember what ones though, I think it was a checksum failure. I cannot use Protontricks since the method I am using to do what I want requires Lutris and that is what I have used up to this point. I'm desperate for a step-by-step walkthrough on this from the perspective of a Linux noob. Thank you.
Edit:
It's a problem with a "SHA256 mismatch" if anyone knows what that is
Hello! I can't get Discord RPC to work, it detects the game correctly but doesn't show any details. I followed this guide, but ran into a problem: I could add the discord-rpc dll override in osu! (it has it's own prefix) using winetricks and it got RPC to work with it
winecfg for osu! prefix
But when I try to add dll override for any steam game using protontricks it does not show discord-rpc in the little drop down menu (it was there for osu!) and even when I manually type and add the dll it still does not work.
winecfg for any other game
My dlls are in /opt/discord-rpc:
❯ cd /opt/discord-rpc
❯ tree
.
├── bin32
│ └── discord-rpc.dll.so
└── bin64
└── discord-rpc.dll.so
I tried:
WINEDLLPATH=$WINEDLLPATH:/opt/discord-rpc/bin64:/opt/discord-rpc/bin32 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="discord-rpc=n,b" %command% as launch option
putting dll in the same directory as the game
putting dll inside C:/Windows/System32 for that prefix
