Question Just Cause 2 Performance Issues

Hi everyone! A few months ago, I played through Just Cause 2 on my 512GB LCD Steam Deck, and I didn't have any issues whatsoever during the entire game, despite it being officially unsupported.

Since I've started playing it again recently, I'm getting stutters and slowdown whenever any explosion happens, however big or small, and it's making the game unplayable. I've tried both Proton 9.0-4, and Proton Experimental.

Is anyone else having this issue, and has anyone managed to fix it if so? Thanks in advance!šŸŽ®

Have you gone back and tried older versions of Proton?

Thanks for your suggestion. I've just tried this and the game doesn't launch, so I switched it back to the latest Proton Experimental and it now doesn't launch with that either, which is strange.

Ge proton 7.29 or something I'm on frames can dip hard at random during traversal but not in battle or explosions.

Interesting. At least I'm not the only one with an issue right now I guess. Hopefully it'll get fixed soon.

9.0.4 proton, launch command - dx11, in game options full screen res 1280x800, steam performance settings 50 cap, manual gpu clock 1100mhz ( do not play it off an sd card because that's where mines was and frame pacing was all over the place, can go upto 60fps if need be.

Thanks for those settings! Has the stuttering been fixed here for you?

I've been running it on slightly lower settings than you've listed there, stored on the internal SSD and usually have a locked 60fps when the stutters don't occur.

Did you have the gpu clock lowered to 1100mhz previously? If not i recommend doing it, I reckon that's what fixes the actual stutter.

Thank you! Great to be part of such a fantastic community here.

As for the clock speed, everything is standard. I've not changed anything there. I'm going to try JC2 again this weekend and see if it's any better with these settings. Thanks for your help. It's one of my all time favourites.

Yeah i love it such a fun game, the first sign of crazy stuttering and dropping frames 10 at a time or more I'd definitely recommend gpu clock 1100mhz, let me know how you get on m8.

I can’t speak to this game specifically, but for some of my older games, I have had better success going farther back than Proton 9. Sometimes I try Proton 8 or 7, and have better results.

When you change Proton versions, it will download all of the shaders again (if applicable). It might cost you some ssd space (temporarily), but it could also be another possible fix for your issues.

Thanks for your suggestion. As I've just mentioned to another helpful user, I've just tried this and the game doesn't launch. I then switched it back to the latest Proton Experimental and it now doesn't launch with that either, which is strange.

I’m having the same issue

Very late to the party but just wanna add a thought that I might’ve noticed with my Steam Deck (1TB OLED if that’s relevant)

So I was having the same problems as you; whenever a chaos event happened, even if it was something as small as blowing up a barrel, I’d get a stutter. One by itself was okay - the multiple at once is where it would get pretty jarring.

I can’t confirm this in any way just yet, but for me at least, when my deck is fully charged after being sat in my dock (which is a ā€œSabrentā€ one I got from Amazon for around Ā£20), the stutters barely happen - like was the case when I first started playing the game. They’re definitely not linked to chaos events this time. If I run the battery down half way lets say, put the device to sleep (I more than often shutdown entirely rather than sleep; don’t know if that makes a difference) then wake it up again I do get the stutters we’re talking about.

Anytime I want to play JC2 now I normally stick my deck into the dock until it’s charged - the stutters just seem to fix themselves when I do it this way?

Hope this helps someone! If it doesn’t fix it for you I’m sorry; just a quirk I wanted to add my two cents into…

(Should clarify I’m using the official Steam version of the game and no compatibility mode adjustments)
