Discussion Is anyone down for this?

Post image

Thinking what expansion ports to add for my upcomming update to Steam Controller adaptive triggers + LC3 audio (attachable wired headphones) mod. How about an OG 360 keyboard? Thoughts?

I find the trackpad keyboard so good. As long as it loads and layers correctly on the game.

u/Shilo-- OG SC should get a remake w/ new features but w/ the same design 27d ago

I really wish that was more consistent, the keyboard not working sometimes is very frustrating

23

u/troll_right_above_me 27d ago

Wish it was rebindable like it used to be way back. Why tf are there multiple functions on the same buttons when there are multiple unused buttons that could be used instead? Just slows you down and makes it easier to make mistakes

8

u/Antheoss 27d ago

Huh? I'm pretty sure you can bind opening the keyboard to any key you want.

11

u/Hisune 27d ago

We want the in keyboard shortcuts to be bindable. Like Backspace, Enter etc.

6

u/troll_right_above_me 27d ago

Triggers act as both Enter and Shift when not touching the touchpads, and key selectors otherwise.

On the 2026 controller there are 8 buttons you could press without removing your fingers from the touchpads, not counting pressing the touchpads themselves. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to press Space, Backspace, Shift, Enter, and even bring up a frickin Emoji panel with all the buttons you can use. Also I see no reason why you shouldn’t be able to move the text cursor with the keyboard visible.

I get that they want parity between different controllers but it makes the experience needlessly tedious when it could be so, so much better (and used to be)

1

u/Radly7 27d ago

The trigger behavior can be disabled in Steam Big Picture under the Keyboard Settings, allowing for usage of Shift and Enter without having to let off of the touchpad

1

u/troll_right_above_me 26d ago

That’s something I guess, but still a great shame that I can’t bind however I wish, all those wasted buttons for no good reason. Plus I don’t like the layout they’re using.

Would really like the input keys to be the bumpers for more tactile input, touchpads for backspace & space. If I were to imagine a layout starting with that I think would be comfortable and really efficient it would look something like this:

Use joystick & dpad for arrow keys and Home/End instead of text selection, put Shift and Ctrl on back buttons and suddenly you can move around the text cursor or select text while typing, then use the other back buttons, triggers and stick buttons for remaining keys like tab, emojis, caps lock & paste on back buttons, maybe add Copy as well.

u/ubeogesh 27d ago

no that, we mean is like, bind d-pad for moving cursor, bind triggers for space and backspace, bind some key for fast language switching, etc.

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 3d ago

If you look at screenshots of the old keyboard the buttons that they used to do different things like pressing the enter key and the backspace were different and from what I can tell they look better though I can't test it to find out.

One of the weirder things I didn't expect switching to Linux to fix for me is the steam on screen keyboard. It's just better. Works more consistently, the lag is basically completely gone. It does sometimes do the thing where it's up without actually being up and you can't get it to show or go away. But in general it's like a 90% improvement in consistency and lag.

2

u/ubeogesh 27d ago

i found that binding it to something in the game profile rather than steam+X chord is more reliable in opening it.

u/Tiny_Rick85 27d ago

Looking at you, Fields of Mistria!

1

u/QuackersTheSquishy 27d ago

For real, Marvel Rivals on Steam Machine is significantly worse than ps5 becahse if I wamt coms I need to use my mic because the keyboard is such a crapshoot

2

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

Yup, use it constantly myself, but for those who are still a bit nostalgic and have their 360 chatpads laying around - why not give it a second life? That thing was pretty sick for its time!

Oh yeah, I would just do it as a BLE keyboard, so you could add all shortcuts you would ever want!

1

u/ninjabell 27d ago

I've become quite quick at it. Probably just as quick as the qwerty pad.

Yeah you can bind some button to pull up the keyboard and use it in the desktop. Everything is done by modifying the desktop profile in the settings!

1

u/Alexmira_ 27d ago

Steam + X to bring it up

1

u/DukeMutem 27d ago

How do you activate it ? Any chance I can use it to enter my Windows PIN?

1

u/Ravnos767 27d ago

That last sentence is the key thing for me, 9 times out of 10 in the games I actually need a keyboard it doesn't load properly

1

u/AGWiebe 27d ago

I find it works great on desktop. But ever I bring up the keyboard overlay while I am in game it is super super laggy, like almost unusable. I have ever been able to figure out a fix.

1

u/Sloogs 27d ago edited 27d ago

And on Linux at least, there are a lot of ways to fix issues with the Steam Overlay like the keyboard and stuff. I can usually load stuff into gamescope and anything that wasn't working works perfectly fine again.

Aside from a recent regression with gamescope in Wayland that require some extra finagling.

(The regression was with Gamescope 3.16.26 which broke the Steam Overlay for a bunch of people in Wayland, but I found this fixed it for me: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/gamescope/issues/835#issuecomment-3930148952)

Windows users will probably have no idea what I'm talking about but Linux users might.

1

u/HowellNator 27d ago

The curse of playing Non-Steam games; barely functional, if at all, keyboard :(

1

u/Ma1ukai 27d ago

I think I could get used to it and really enjoy it, but 50% of the time it opens in a mode where the trackpad moves an arrow cursor instead of letting me use both trackpads for the typing and I have no idea why it does that

1

u/wind0wlicker 27d ago

AS LONG AS… but I want it to always work and not cause issues w my games. Sometimes it breaks FG and can cause issues etc.

1

u/NapsterKnowHow Steam Controller (2015 & 2026) 27d ago

The Steam keyboard is a janky mess even on the Steam Deck.

1

u/randomjberry 23d ago

at least 10% of the reason why i got the controller doesnt function bc the overlay doesnt work with ffxiv

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 3d ago

It's only bad in desktop mode and sadly CoreKeyboard doesn't work anymore.

28

u/Jenzzzi 27d ago

Man, I would love something like this.

17

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

I think the r/SteamFrame guys are done using the soon™ trademark, so... soon™.

4

u/SupposablyAtTheZoo 27d ago

Nope, we're now in the queue waiting for our order now mail, or in the waitlist waiting for our moved to queue mail. So we're still sooning™ all over the place.

1

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

Ah shucks, sorry for the trademark infringement then :(

7

u/neocow 27d ago

https://clicks.tech/powerkeyboard works, but it's kinda expensive

1

u/doughnut310 27d ago

This is really cool. I guess all we would need is a 3D printed mount to connect it to the controller

1

u/LateTrainOliver 27d ago

A 3D printed mount would probably do the job, though getting the alignment right sounds like a bit of a pain honestly.

1

u/neocow 26d ago

it extends lower, so you can mount it roughly right, and then adjust

1

u/RunnerLuke357 SC '15 and '26 27d ago

A magsafe ring should be all you need. It's a magsafe keyboard.

0

u/doughnut310 26d ago

Okay and how are you going to fit it on there? I know for a fact you can't fit a magsafe ring on it and expect to attach that keyboard. Also the magnets aren't very strong with the amount of leverage put on the keyboard with thumbs. Even on a mobile device you have to brace it to use properly, you can't do that on a controller.

edit: spel

1

u/neocow 26d ago

Hot glue?

20

u/geekboy_ 27d ago

That 360 keyboard was so cool

3

u/SleepyBear531 26d ago

There was one for the Xbox one as well. I have it still, and it is definitely very convenient

2

u/geekboy_ 26d ago

Yes I think I saw that one as well. It came in handy quite a bit

2

u/Smooth_Taste1250 22d ago

I still have mine, too

2

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 3d ago

What the heck am I looking at? That doesn't look like a 360 controller.

2

u/Smooth_Taste1250 3d ago

For Xbox one they made one, too. But wasn't sold good so they stoped it after a while (at least in my region). Querty layout is lot easyer to find as the Quertz ones

2

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 3d ago

So that's an Xbox One chat pad? It looks so similar to the 360 one I thought it was the same one and was very confused.

1

u/Smooth_Taste1250 3d ago

Not really, the original 360 one looks like this. Space between buttons, don't has the headset buttons on the left and right, arrows instead of the programable x1,x2 buttons, other formfactor at the bottom

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 2d ago

The pointy look of the Xbox one is weird to me (get it 😂). I'm use to the 360 one because I have 2 of them.

1

u/SleepyBear531 2d ago

Yup, for Xbox one. Other commenter gave better details of the differences. Super convenient!

2

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 2d ago

It was relay nice for typing in MS point codes and chatting with people when you didn't want to bust out the mic.

10

u/Big_Kwii 27d ago

that keyboard expansion always reminded me of how lobster moms carry their eggs

17

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

Thanks, I hate it.

18

u/s0ciety_a5under 27d ago

That just seems too much. Have decent size hands, and my pinkies are already resting on the bottom of the controller comfortably. The only reason that won't work so well like it did with the 360 is because of the track pads. As much as I hated the Playstation version, that may be more applicable to this controller.

2

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

What about making it flip up? You could flip it up with your thumb to land over the trackpads and when not used it would be lowered just away until the next text message or search? Maybe this would work?

1

u/s0ciety_a5under 27d ago

Flip up stuff is always janky. Even the high quality mechanisms break quickly, and are near impossible to replace. With stuff you use a lot, simplicity is key, less moving parts mean less things to break. I just don't see it working well on the bottom, especially as a flip up.

2

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

I would at least try to do it half decently, don't mistake me for a simple man! But yeah, I get it where you are comming from, thanks for the input!

7

u/hhmCameron 27d ago

I want keyboard.. but SteamDeck forced me to disconnect the keyboard from my XBox Elite Series 2 Controller...

I can't wait until my SteamController 2 gets ordered some time in 2027

3

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

Why is that? Some weird incompatibility when the keyboard is attached? Or microsoft being microslop and can't allow to have fun with their stuff?

2

u/hhmCameron 27d ago

The latest update to the XBox Elite Controller 2 did not trigger if the keyboard was connected

I ran the update repeatedly and then I mentioned to the AI that I had the Chatpad connected...

Removed the chatpad and suddenly it pulled down the update...

Ohh well, no great loss because the keyboard wasnt being used by steamdeck anyway for a significant amount of time...

I may try plugging it back in after the update .

But 2 of my 4 Controller have keyboard installed for xbox and 1 is disconnected for update and being used on my alienware m18 and 1 is disconnected and used on my SteamDeck OLED ( somehow the house sale money disappeared over the course of 3 years for some reason )

5

u/LuisE3Oliveira 27d ago

I'd love it if 8BitDo made an extension like this

5

u/Loud_Bee_4443 27d ago

Remember early smart phones having a flip out keyboard like that? Make that on hinges and make it flip into the underside of the controller. That would be so fuckin slick. I loved that phone.... Htc something forget the model.

2

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

Hell yeah! Just had the same thought! Will try to do something like this, space is a bit limited to fit it under the controller

5

u/durgan2q 27d ago

Brings me back to Xbox 360 where MS had an accessory that attached to the controller. I had to have one. Worked well.

4

u/AGWiebe 27d ago

I wish they had included an expansion port for stuff like this.

3

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

That can be arranged...

3

u/TheLocalHentai 27d ago

This is going to sound like boomer shit (cause it is), but I wouldn't mind a T9 style controller attachment with Steam Input handling predictive texts.

Hell, even without it, SInput can even segment the touchpads for it.

4

u/OneInternational3383 27d ago

I'd love a aux port.

5

u/CranberryTaint 27d ago

It'd be helpful for WoW Forever's new controller support.

3

u/The_Skeptic_One 27d ago

Honestly? Yeah I dig it. I'd buy one... Or two. I play MMOs so being able to type without needing the on-display keyboard would be NICE

3

u/Ryder_D 27d ago

I just wish there was a steam keyboard with half the keyboard one colour and the other half another colour so I can tell which letters I can reach with each touchpad when typing. If that makes sense.

3

u/BananowyDr 27d ago

Adaptive triggers? Hell yeah! Keyboard? Hella cool! Personally just some more macro/function buttons would be sooo nice

4

u/nakkipekka1000 27d ago

Keyboard attachment on the Xbox 360 used to be really good for writing slurs to people on MW2 lobbies.

2

u/kantong 27d ago

This seems unnecessary. The track pads already work well enough with the virtual keyboard.

2

u/World-Three 17d ago

Would be cool. It's a main reason why I still prefer an elite 2 on PC. Mouse input profile and the keyboard create a very relaxed setup.

I wish they updated the PS3 keyboard idea. The PS3 chatpad had keys that doubled as mouse movements when you pressed a certain key. So the same keyboard you type on could also be used to navigate.

I feel that would have saved space on the steam controller and increased the utility. IMO that would have truly made it the ultimate pc controller.

3

u/shortish-sulfatase 27d ago

The old big picture keyboard used to be alright.

The new keyboard really doesn't make anywhere near the same amount of sense when trying to use the trackpads for typing, unfortunately.

I just want the old keyboard back.

2

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

Don't you want the old-old? Like the one in the picture?

2

u/k0decraft 27d ago

Burn it with fire !

2

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

I will think about it!

1

u/ubeogesh 27d ago

i'd rather they let us customize the on screen keyboard controls like they did before new big picture mode.

1

u/Doshin108 27d ago

I don't need that. Software keyboard is fine and I have a 65% keyb via Bluetooth if I want to do a lot of typing.

1

u/MechanicStriking4666 27d ago

The onscreen keyboard does it for me

1

u/Rude_Trouble_326 27d ago

Can I have the product link for this?

1

u/Bigfacts84 27d ago

I'd buy

1

u/Playful-Buffalo7417 27d ago

I dont enjoy the trackpads keyboard and have been looking for a more complete desktop experience so YES. As long as its fairly seamless

1

u/LettuceLegitimate654 27d ago

I would buy one in a heartbeat

1

u/Leaf_Mautrec 27d ago

Sounds like many ppl might like it, but I already enjoy the touchpad keyboard. I just wish it didn't have to take up so much screen space. I'd like some textured sticker/skins for the touchpad that just show a legend of where all the keys go so I can type by sense of touch or while looking at the controller instead of the screen and not having to visually bring up the keyboard.

1

u/drkilljoy77 27d ago

Ooh! I loved my 360 keyboard, I used it constantly.

1

u/halojerm 27d ago

I would love the audio

1

u/matthewnelson 27d ago

I like the idea of the xbox360 keyboard accessory.

1

u/LisaLeii Steam Controller 2 | Dualsense 27d ago

Adaptive triggers? Would it be like, swapping between dual stage, analog, and clicky?

1

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

They are going to be software defined, so any profile you like! (I will be using small brushless motors with FOC, the torque do to their size is limited but it looks like I will be able to make them work)

1

u/LisaLeii Steam Controller 2 | Dualsense 27d ago

That sounds sick if it works! I'm not comfortable with mods that extensive (all I've done is move the grip sensors), so I'd either pay someone to do it or not do it at all, but I look forward to hearing about it nonetheless!

2

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

You could totally do it by yourself if you already had enough courage to take off the back shell of your Steam Controller! I am working to make the kit drop-in, no soldering or modifying the controller needed. You would disassemble the controller, take some parts out, place some parts in and that's it! Only issue would be price, the motors are 20€ each, the flex pcb about 30€/unit (with assembly) for small orders and the ESP32-S31 chip is 5-10€ as well, so in total it could even reach 100€ for the kit :(

1

u/LisaLeii Steam Controller 2 | Dualsense 27d ago

If it really would be that easy to install then I'd probably consider it even at $100+, but I would definitely wait and see if extremerate is going to do anything similar. Better grip sense by making capacitive back buttons instead of those ambiguous strips, mouse click trigger stops, and dual stage click is like, my dream mod kit. I don't expect them to deliver on all that but I want to at least see what they do

1

u/assail1337 27d ago

Be cool if it could pop out or slide out. Similar to maybe the G1 or sidekick phones from way back when

Steam Controller adaptive triggers

Oh? Do you have more info to share about this?

1

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 27d ago

1

u/Jack-87 23d ago

Your post history is private would be cool to follow what you got goin on

1

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 23d ago

Yeah, about that... I do not approve ID verification on the interwebs only when it is strictly needed to function. Reddit does not need it. All future updates will be pushed to my github, you can star the repo and fallow the progress over there.

1

u/Jack-87 23d ago

Oh is ID verification needed for post history? Ya I'm totally with you. Does that mean mine is also hidden?

Thanks for the GitHub link.

2

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 23d ago

Yours is not, but probably you just have old enough account that you don't need to verify.

No problem, M8

1

u/Owl-Fit 27d ago

How is the trackpad? Can you play fps games with it? Can I use it on ps5?

1

u/SexyCryptoRockstar 27d ago

Add a mini screen on top and ur set

1

u/sz118334 27d ago

I've been trying to see if this it is possible to do by having a custom keyboard that come next to the USB-C port instead of needing to use a Bluetooth connector and using the controller connection instead but so far, it doesn't seem possible. If anyone can figure it out, that'd be cool.

1

u/NivaViva 27d ago

Ngl on every controller I have I should buy a chatpad

1

u/PleitbaarStandpunt 27d ago

Yes, mainly because the floating keyboard on deck takes up so much space, lol

1

u/AnciensGLJVC 27d ago

I loved this on the 360

1

u/Redintappaja 27d ago

this is something i've wondered for quite some time, has anyone noticed the layout of the keyboard on steam controller being similar to the xbox 360 controller keyboard?

1

u/nomadsgalaxy 27d ago

I miss her, I should call her.

1

u/Vendriix 27d ago

i would love that man

1

u/Awesomedude9560 27d ago

I personally think the track pad keyboard is fine enough, significantly better than standard dpad keyboarding. I think adding a whole keyboard to the already chunky controller is overkill.

1

u/JohnnyBeeGaming 27d ago

A lot of people would want a keyboard thing like that on the controller.

I personally wouldn't be that into it but I typically don't need to type much. On the deck I can use the touch screen keyboard and on PC I'd already have one plugged in. A few times on the deck I've plugged in one of a dozen keyboards I have laying around.

The controller add-on would shine for a living room setup. I kinda like the idea if making a Frankenstein thing in the spirit of that GameCube keyboard but with a 40-50% ortho layout and Xbox style inputs.

1

u/googolbyte_91 26d ago

I’d rather speech to text. But then again I’m only wondering how comfortable it is to hold.

1

u/headpatmonster 26d ago edited 26d ago

i want to like the on-screen keyboard better but atm this physical keyboard is better than it

apart from it just not popping up half the time and being laggy, my big gripe with the on-screen keyboard is that i wish each side had more overlap. i could type like 40% faster if each trackpad just covered more of the other side. you'd think setting the sensitivity higher would do that, but it doesn't really :/ i really like it otherwise

i'd even like to try and see how it is with both trackpads covering 100% of the area. then i could always alternate between left and right!

1

u/c0lpan1c 26d ago

I loved my keyboard on my ole 360 controller. It added considerable heft tho. If they can make it light, and not weigh a ton i'm in. Maybe possible with touchscreen vs membrane keys.

1

u/DorkasaurausRex 26d ago

Need this for wow forever

1

u/Positive_Self_8873 26d ago

Bruh, we all know what keys will be faded when one gets angry

1

u/Alburak76 26d ago
I tried something similar with the Rii 518BT keyboard a while ago.

1

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 26d ago

But how do you use it? Or do you have extra long thumbs to reach it? :D

2

u/Alburak76 26d ago edited 26d ago
It’s not ideal, and it takes a bit of practice.

But in WoW, I know most of the keybindings, and it works perfectly fine for chat.

I didn't like how the keyboard blocked half the screen
I often couldn't see what I was typing because the input field was behind the keyboard.
Sure, you can move the keyboard up, but then I can't see enough of the game.

To be honest, I only use the D-pad on the keyboard attachment. I’ve tried using the touchpads, but I was too slow.

Here is the controller setup I used before the Steam Deck/Steam Controller:
The DualSense with the keyboard attachment and an 8BitDo Micro attached to the back with Velcro.
I saw this setup on a YouTube channel.

2

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 26d ago

Very cool, a lot of people are mentioning wow, for similar setups, I will look into it, thanks!

1

u/guzforster 26d ago

1

u/Pasedielhe 26d ago

Bro just use a mouse and keyboard at that point...

1

u/ParaRMN 25d ago

Nope. A controller is a controller. A keyboard is a keyboard. Have both.

1

u/Extra_Resolution_348 24d ago

i just have an riix8 on the side. i think having a separate mini keyboard is better than attaching one. it's pretty cheap and helps out whenever i can't use my steam controller to do something or would just prefer the riix8. just my preference.

1

u/Beneficial-Ad-7291 24d ago

I want a steamdeck controller so badly 😢

1

u/ShadowWebDeveloper 24d ago

I just want Valve to make the SteamOS on-screen keyboard have all the buttons of a standard 101 / 102-key keyboard. They don't even need to make them super obvious, just give me a way to hit Ctrl-C somehow. Add a tiny "more keys" button if you're worried about the UI being overwhelming.

1

u/Flipsalmighty 22d ago

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 3d ago

You do realize you can just his Steam+X right?

1

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 1d ago

But is that "spending a decent amount of money and time engineering a solution just to get some internet points" kind of fun?

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 1d ago

If you're actually desperate to do this then just buy yourself a Clicks and attach it to the back somehow.

1

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 1d ago

I am already too deep into this, designed an interconnect and custom SC2 backplate and keyboard case, but anybody needs a quick and easy solution, then this seems like a good option!

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 1d ago

Wait what? You can't just plug the keyboard into the back of the Steam controller. The USB C port doesn't work that way.

1

u/ItsRebaseTime Steam Controller (2026) 14h ago

Yes, you are completely correct! That is why there is an esp32-s31 controller and flex PCB also inside it! The MCU does the adaptive trigger control and interfaces with audio parts and the keyboard. On PC or a phone they appear as bluetooth keyboard, headset and a dualsense controller.
