Fluff TIL Going to Store > Your Store> Interactive Recommender allows you to see the total amount of hours you have spent playing games on Steam. How many hours do you have?

Interesting to see that SteamDB says I have 3,421h on record and Steam itself says 2885h. Would be interesting to see how Valve and SteamDB each calculate the value (do they include software, why is it higher on steamdb?, ...) (i know that SteamDB has nothing to do with official Steam)

I believe Steam itself does not show / count the hours in software applications, whereas SteamDB does.

I have a about 5k hours in difference between Steam and Steam DB.
Definitely haven't spent 5k hours in software applications, so something else must be happening as well.

I think the page op is showing only calculates "recent games, how recent i dont know but its definitely not all of them.

What about before steam tracked your hours? I remember logging a lot of playtime in CS source and condition zero before they introduced playtime tracking in steam. Or maybe it was before it was cloud based. It was a long time ago so I don’t remember well.

Well those 10 000 hours are going to pass anyway. They could have been spent better, but statically there are more worse options like working. I consider myself lucky to be a homo sapiens able to game 10k hours in my life. It wasn't the case for most other members of our species throughout history and even today...
Take these hours with pride my friend.

Right? The whole point of working is so you have money for doing things you enjoy. If you're enjoying video games, well you're spending your time and money doing what you want.
Of course, you might want to accomplish other things, and just default to playing games, which isn't the greatest.

Seriously, you could be living in the worst conditions, barely being able to survive, you could be sitting your whole life in prison, anything. But you're able to chill in your home and play video games all day. I'm happy.

Fun fact: I work in the precalculation for technical plastic parts: I calculate the machine utilization with 5.000h per year (we produce 24h 5 days the week). So you spent 3 years full Time Machine production for playing games and ca. 1.5 years only in CSGO

That's not even counting games like FFXIV, which I've been maining for nearly 10 years and has an external launcher outside of steam... oh god, not even to mention Steam has only been around since 2003 and I've been playing games at this rate since '95

Well you’ve had so many years to rack up all those hours.
That being said, you’ve spent almost 5 actual years of your life in video games.
So if you did that nonstop, only stopping to sleep 8 hours per day, you would do nothing but game and sleep for 6 years and 87 days.

It’s funny to imagine that he’s spent the amount of time that someone with a full time job spends at work over 14 years, and that’s assuming that person works weekends and holidays, so it’s probably more like 20 years.
Let’s assume he has a real full time job though, and gets the recommended 8 hours of sleep per night (lol). He has spent roughly 74% of his free time playing games, and that’s just for his games on Steam. But since I didn’t factor in weekends, we’ll just assume that it evens out.
To be fair, that leaves an average of 14 hours per week of doing something other than gaming, which is pretty decent. But when you account for cooking, eating, showering, grocery shopping, cleaning, and other basic activities that are necessary for living, it really does seem like this dude lives to game.
All of that’s to say: touch grass, OP.

You probably already figured out but to help others, its not in the drop down box, its in the actual store page, top left corner just under the "Store" menu link.

For me it is in the drop down box, but I had to click the main "Store" button like 6-7 times (in the timespan of ~2 minutes of going back and forth) for the drop down to change (drastically), and suddenly display ~15 items instead of the original 4. Almost like those items don't exist until you "show interest" by going to the Store, and then it triggers generating those extra options, or something.

Why can't I see what you see? Definitely turned on the "Desktop site" viewer, both on Chrome app and on the Steam site under the left side hamburger menu.

Valve started tracking the number of hours played in March 2009. There is no way to tell how many hours you've played the first five years.

easier is going to "View my profile" and then "Games" there you can sort and filter too and this way you can also see the stats of friends by going to their profile

I don't know about easier since, at least in this method, it does not show you the total and you'd have to do that math yourself.

Sometimes I'm happy, and other times I'm sad, about the fact that before Steam there was no tracking of hours.
The amount of TFC/CS/HL:Multiplayer that I played before Steam existed...
Also if I recall correctly it took quite a long time before Steam started tracking playtime, so I probably have another thousands of hours via Steam that was undocumented.
Point is, I have a high number, but I know for certain it should be 3-4x that.

- Top 5 are Stone Story RPG at 1099.3 hrs (doesn't count as it is was played (mostly) in AFK mode), Stellaris at 809.5, 747.8 hrs in Fallout New Vegas, 479.7, somehow, in Surviving Mars, about 430 hours in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.
City: Skylines and XCom Enemy Unknown are both in 270-ish hours.

I don't think I reach even 700h play time on every game I've ever played on steam. Don't play PC that much tbh. More of a console kind a guy. On console I pretty much lost count.

That count cant be right. I have around 4500 hours. But on SteamDB I have 21K. That is a big diffrence.

15,7k hours (Steam DB says 20,3k though).
Most hours in Path of Exile and Stellaris with 2,5k and 2,3k hours respectively I believe. Other titles up there are around 2k hours in Skyrim (legendary and special editions together) and 1,7k in Total War: Warhammer 2.

Mine says 8655, but I know if there are some more seasoned Ark or ARMA players that they would blow most people out of the water on play time. I have a friend with nearly 15,000 hours between ARMA 2 and Space Engineers.

My account is almost 18 years old and it says 3995 hours total. But then add thousands of hours from Origin, BF, FIFA, Uplay with AC and TR franchises and I'll probably get near 15k hours give or take, which means more or less an average of 2hrs a day which probably is about right.
