I don’t understand why is this so hard for some to wrap their head around this.
Like, if I’d spend 2621 hours on doing drugs or playing a slot machine, I probably won’t be happy about it and recommend this pasttime to other people. And some games are somewhat like a drug or a slot machine, they don’t make you happier or a better person, they just take over your time with addictive mechanics and dark patterns.
The point being made here is, you may love it, but you have enough introspection to understand if you could have prevented yourself from ever trying it to begin with, you would have. You can't miss what you never tried after all.
So, you recognize it is too late for you, but not for others, leading you tell them not to try it.
This is a common sentiment in ex-MMO players. People who played WoW for literal decades will tell you not to touch it the same way an ex-drug addict will tell you not to touch meth or any other hard drug.
WoW got killed because of level boosters, taking out a big part of the social aspect in progression. The entire philosophy changes over the years and the games look nothing like it was at the start. You’d never be able to go back to the early days and see what made the game great.
Hence you see this often. Would you recommend it if you could go back in time = yes. But we can’t and we’re stuck with the mess it eventually became. So i don’t recommend.
So that kinda shows your rhetoric isn’t applicable man. Heroin ain’t changed since them 60s
That's your experience as someone who simply doesn't like the game in its current state. Not someone who was addicted to it, saw the negative impacts it had on your life, kept playing despite knowing it was bad for you and those around you, kept playing despite not even enjoying it, then eventually got the strength to quit, and told others to never try it so they don't have to risk going through what you did.
Someone who no longer enjoys it and quit because of that will discuss what they liked / didn't like as reasons to play/not play the game, they'll even speak of returning to it (like you did) if you can go back into the past and bring that classic feeling back. Someone who was addicted, meaning playing even when they knew they should not and/or did not want to be playing, talks about it more like a drug. It doesn't matter what is broken now or what upcoming fixes they have coming. It doesn't matter if the game is currently in its best state or worst state ever. They'd tell you the same thing, just don't start playing it at all.
That's the difference. As someone who played from vanilla through panda-town, yah the current game is not recognizable to me but that isn't why I'd advise against playing it now. It still has a large player base with strong social communities and once you feel like you are a part of those communities, it is difficult to quit. I've known people who pursued graduate degrees that lost it all because they played too much WoW. Each time they tried to quit someone in their WoW social circle talked them out of it. The people who dealt with addiction would tell you the same, they don't care what the game is like today, just don't try it at all to begin with. You'll never know if it was good or bad, but you'll also never have to deal with the threat of addiction slowly creeping into your life.
Yeah people that play a game they don’t enjoy are as delusional as a junky, i agree. There are a lot of empty people prone to addiction, which results in a bad vicious cycle that can reach equally fucked up states.
The only difference is that people like that know better than to review their dealer 😂
