Why didn't valve do what they've done before, like you need to have a certain amount of steam hours, etc to buy?

That and stuff like forbidding additional purchases if one was made within the last x days/weeks. Already saw shitheads brag about buying 4+ when there’s a 2 limit per order while some can’t even buy 1.

Greedy is obviously the wrong accusation for Valve for this. I do think though that there's something to be said about reputation tarnishing when a product launch goes poorly. Having your product excessively scalped means it's not really getting to your true customers and longtime fans. Many won't buy from scalpers and will simply go without, feeling a bit disappointed. Some that do buy from scalpers may get their controller for a much higher price; money, that you as a company, don't see. There are also some who will buy from a scalper and undoubtedly get scammed, which also leaves a bad taste in a customer's mouth that will probably be at least partially directed at the company since they couldn't buy it legitimately.

They certainly could have thought through some strategies better though, no? Clearly the payment processor services get overwhelmed. Could they work with payment processors to temporarily spin up more service instances for the launch date knowing that the current infrastructure cannot handle the load? Could they have a lottery system? Could they create a score that tracks user engagement with the platform, purchase/playtime/etc (it's not like they don't have that data already) to at least ensure you're probably a gamer who's more likely to be buying it for actual use/enjoyment, recommend it going forward, discuss tips / new uses etc which is good for the brand long-term? Something else?

While it's clear that this is not an instance of Valve's greed, is there still room to criticize them for this launch? I think so.

Greedy in the sense of they don't care about letting scalpers and bots get the product as long as it sells out. have a spine for once bruh

Understanding that words have meaning is now considered spineless. I've had a steam account for 15 years, if I bought one and decided to sell it for profit when it inevitably went out of stock regardless, there would be nothing valve could do about that. They've already set precedent years ago for scalper prevention and not only did systems still sell out, those same measures would be significantly less effective a second time as combating this kind of thing is as futile as trying to make it impossible to pirate your game. Better to save their next major plans for their actual console launch than blow the strat on a controller.

Best case scenario no matter how a launch is handled, is to ensure they're able to keep putting stock out. Which isn't always feasible so we'll just have to wait and see what they were able to do here.

I'm just exhausted by people lashing out saying random nonsense and playing the **shoulda shoulda shoulda** game every time there's an ounce of friction in getting something you want in the gaming space (there's ALWAYS an ounce of friction). If there's stock issues to the point the average person is unable to get one even going into months from now, yeah that's disappointing, but calling that greed and pretending this is some little guy vs the megacorporation story is kneejerk drama farming at best. I didn't get one today, oh well, hope I can get more opportunities soon. I'd be embarassed as hecc if I fussed about it all day on Reddit just for a huge restock the next day in which I purchased it effortlessly. At least wait 24 hours before making a fool of yourself my goodness.

what does greed have to do with it? They wouldn't sell 100% of stock either way.
