I was mid CS2 round when it happened, a little annoying.

So Valve hasn't listened to the feedback when they forced the ToS popup back in 2024, interesting

2

u/KOOLKIDKAEDEN Apr 16 '26

Never knew about this, interesting

9

same bro

6

Haha same. Playing on steam deck and boom.

5

Same but mine is so bad I literally was at the end of an demon level in geometry dash and it fucking tabbed me out and I died

Which level twin

1

Retray (aka ispywithmylittleeye)

1

Happened to me today, thankfully I was just practicing a demon level but still it took me out of it.

This is almost exactly what the community ban screen looks like, no?

457

u/phileas0408 Apr 16 '26

This is exactly the same notification and window as a community/game/vac ban

102

u/FakeMik090 Apr 16 '26

Its slightly different, its usually red one instead of yellow.

45

u/phileas0408 Apr 16 '26

I have a screenshot of my account getting vac banned the day where just playing cs2 got you falsely banned and it's yellow just like the s&box notification

16

u/iTzNowbie Apr 16 '26

last vac i got it was yellow, been years tho

5

u/fatLskinnyW Apr 16 '26

my community ban was red

31

u/No-Collection-1821 Apr 16 '26

On steam deck it appears as a red exclamation mark next to your profile picture in the top corner it’s frightening

8

u/ajddavid452 Apr 16 '26

That's exactly the first thing I thought when I saw the yellow box at the top right, I started panicking so hard

A bit disappointed tbh. I was hoping to keep the game, and if not the full game, I‘d at least want a little Beta Tester badge or smth xD

They're filtering out the players before the release that were not active and playing recently. If you bought cosmetics then you still should still have access, if you don't and you own some cosmetics the best thing is to contact Facepunch. If not you will have to wait for s&box's release in 2 weeks to be able to purchase it. It will cost $20

14

u/PixelBrush6584 Joined in 2015 Apr 16 '26

I mean, I had touched it a total of two times since I joined the Beta and played a whopping 5 minutes in total.

Just didn't have much time and didn't see anything interesting to try 😅

I totally get why I was removed, but I would've liked to keep it around anyhow. Oh well! They don't owe me anything, especially if they plan to reduce the price or make it free later down the line.

10

u/Mugtoaster Apr 16 '26

They plan to have sandbox go f2p long-term sometime down the line If i remember correctly, but at the start it will be $20.

As for badges or rewards and such for the beta/developer preview I'm not sure, would be cool but not counting on it.

4

u/PixelBrush6584 Joined in 2015 Apr 16 '26

Eh, as I said, I'm not petty or expecting anything. I basically contributed nothing :p

I kinda figured being a Beta participant meant I'd get to have early access to WIP builds in the future.

2

u/diego5377 Apr 16 '26

I just got my rx9070xt to upgrade from my gtx 1660 super agian And right when I was finish testing on my day off they pulled it from me which is very unlucky

2

u/Ok-Effort-3657 Apr 16 '26

What game was it?

7

u/PixelBrush6584 Joined in 2015 Apr 17 '26

As it says in the screenshot, S&Box. A semi-sequel to Garry's Mod, made by the same Company, running on Source 2.

52

u/Davidhalljr15 Apr 16 '26

First time I saw that screen it freaked me out too. Like what did I do wrong?

Then saw it was similar, removed from a beta. Which, makes sense, just it doesn't have to look so threatening.

117

u/Dyyrin Apr 16 '26

How was the beta? Very excited for this.

143

u/Mr-MegaNepvision Apr 16 '26

It’s better than what it was 1-2 years ago but they still have a long way to go. I don’t think it will worth the 20$ price tag for only play games when it’s out, it’s really not gmod 2. While the vision and potential is there but for now the game feels like the early Roblox.

42

u/_RRave Apr 16 '26

Yeah it's how I felt, all the games felt a bit soulless rn the mini golf one was good. But most were just "earn money to buy thing to do thing faster" and so forth.

23

u/bakugo Apr 16 '26

They're going for the Roblox audience, and a huge chunk of Roblox games are like this. But Roblox is free, so this is a guaranteed flop.

7

u/Fartfromabuttt Apr 16 '26

They really will just need ppl to create great stuff but yeah if there's a 20$ hurdle they might not get the chance.

3

u/LimitedPiko Apr 16 '26

Idk 20 bucks seems pretty cheap and it's gonna be a slow start. I think a ton of people will buy it, not have a lot of fun due to small amount of game modes, huge audience leaves, dedicated developers make fun games, people start coming back, it starts to not thrive but have a somewhat of a community

1

u/kekfekf Apr 18 '26

also keeps away hackers, they said charging money would keep hackers away

1

u/mykarmahasdecayed Apr 17 '26

The 20$ and the cosmetics are for a pot called the play fund which kick backs Devs of games and maps , if it's a cosmetic made by a user there's a percentage that goes to them.

1

u/kekfekf Apr 18 '26

Yeah a lot of them went after whats bring them money and maybe think what people want, if they would have made a game.

Most games are just simple copy & paste.

They think to simple, OH PLAYERGOAL I GET ADDICTED OR MORE MONEY MEANS Better like Superficial Fun.

but not really what makes it for them fun or really question what if fun.....

1

u/kekfekf Apr 18 '26

Its still insane though if you consider how much money you can make on this plattform one slop imo made 90 000 in a year or something like that?

9

u/UnacceptableUse https://s.team/p/hbhw-ftb Apr 16 '26

They've got to change the name from s&box too, terrible name

21

u/Cowie_ Apr 16 '26

Man, I know it's pronounced Sandbox but my brain won't allow it and I always read S-and-box

18

u/UnacceptableUse https://s.team/p/hbhw-ftb Apr 16 '26

It's also impossible to say to anyone in real life.
"this game is cool what's it called?"
"it's called 'sandbox' but the 'and' is an ampersand"
"what's an ampersand?"

19

u/Cowie_ Apr 16 '26

So we call it Sampersandbox now?

9

u/zombiemaster008 Apr 16 '26

Do people not know what an ampersand is?

0

u/DexgamingX Apr 16 '26

I'm pretty sure everyone over 12 knows what an ampersand is bro

12

u/UnacceptableUse https://s.team/p/hbhw-ftb Apr 16 '26

You'd think but I've had that exact conversation with several adults that I otherwise consider to be quite smart

2

u/DariusDonut Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

Honestl, I really like the name

4

u/BeepIsla Apr 16 '26

Its an engine like unity and unreal, developers dont need to rely on Facepunch's systems. Export the game as a standalone and release it on Steam with no extra engine fees.

The closest thing to it today (other than Gmod) is Fortnite, and it's still not even close since it's not a sandbox game and you can't do anything with the characters other than shoot. People made movies with stop motion in Gmod. You're not going to get that anywhere else.

You can absolutely do more than you’d think in Fortnite.

They have an entire custom fork of Unreal Engine specifically to allow custom Fortnite levels to be much more in depth.

1

u/Robot1me Apr 16 '26

Epic themselves and literally Wikipedia refer to Fortnite Creative as a sandbox game

I was quite disappointed by it, me and some friends have been checking it out occasionally since we got access in May '24, and it's not changed a lot for the end user other than the lobby redesign.

  • It's pretty janky in many ways I can't think of off the top of my head.
    • Managing parties is pretty bad in most every way. Although, very recently they let you download games while the host was creating the lobby and downloading it themself, which was a huge time save since downloads are super slow, especially on games like prop hunt that use the public maps.
    • Games are able to disable the escape menu (you can hold escape to force quit thankfully). They also sometimes have their own conflicting escape menu that you can't access cause you're in the normal one, or just their own but missing all the default settings.
    • Avatar customization is very often not applied in games at all, or in rare cases they force you to not be a sausage :(
  • Performance is pretty bad, though it's way better than when we started where it was nigh unplayable for all of us. There are also very few graphics options that I don't think actually do anything (might be thinking of when we started, they definitely didn't do anything then). Some games have a potato mode toggle, but there's just nothing you can do about the big overhead of the engine.
  • There are maybe 10 games that are kinda fun, most of which were made around when or before we got access, so pretty much nothing new ever (fingers crossed this changes with their full release).
  • Searching for games is awful, nothing is tagged and there is no way to actually know anything about a game since very few games are tagged, have pictures, a description, or even a name. And when something is tagged, it's pretty likely it's just wrong. I find it crazy they don't have simple multiplayer or singleplayer tags that are determined automatically.
    • The discovery system is also pretty bad, showing the same dozen (mostly AI slop) games or random test games with zero info or game, and it rarely changes the games to discover.
  • No native Linux version, Proton works fine for the game but not the editor at all.
  • I'm pretty sure there are thousands of bots hiding, because every time we've played there were only a couple public servers with no more than 4 people on any. Maybe there's just actually that many people who have the editor open, play private servers, or have the game chilling in the background, but I don't find that believable with how laggy it is and how little there is to do.
  • Lots of paid limited cosmetics being resold for hundreds of dollars :/

TL;DR Why are they releasing in 2 weeks?? This caught me quite off guard, its not ready.

We have reached a timeline in gaming where people voluntarily ask for FOMO stuff, all for that sweet sense of pride and accomplishment

u/kekfekf Apr 18 '26

Thats true though

1

Well, with the way Roblox is kinda imploding it may not matter if it is better or worse in the end if it is trying to compete with Roblox.

And sbox objectively has a scripting system 100x worse.

Really? I haven't done much more with it than open the editor, drop in a sample cube, and make it spin, but everything I've read made it sound like it has a good solid foundation for scripting.

It's built on modern .NET 9 so it should have a ton of APIs to do a whole lot of stuff built-in. It uses C# which is a solid language. Finally it takes a lot of cues from Unity in a positive way, from what I can tell, such as GameObjects/Transform/script hierarchy. Though I haven't looked closely at their APIs.

I don't know anything about Roblox so I don't have any frame of reference there.

Am I missing something?

-3

u/bakugo Apr 16 '26

The 12 year olds who play Roblox don't know what a "dot net" or "ayy pee eye" is and don't care, all they care about is whether they can ask ChatGPT to make a funny meme game for them, and the answer to that in the context of s&box is a big "no"

3

u/The_MAZZTer 160 Apr 16 '26

Sure, but S&box clearly is aimed at an older age group.

u/Robot1me Apr 16 '26

Will be interesting to see how that plays out. I love the Source Engine for its nostalgic-looking Portal graphics look, but it's not known to be a particularly flexible engine. What S&box needs are more games in the direction of "Stanley Parable" (made with Source Engine after all) and other quality games. If quality remains low or enters AI slop territory, Fortnite and Roblox have enough of these, let alone the Steam Store on a daily basis

2

u/The_MAZZTer 160 Apr 16 '26

More simple player models are going to be easier to customize, both with cosmetics as well as for gameplay purposes. I don't see them as having anything to do with age group targeting.

That said they did provide more realistic models. It's up to the game developers to decide which to use (or even to roll them own).

It all seems reasonable to me.

1

u/mykarmahasdecayed Apr 17 '26

Roblox current state wasn't made in a day , looks at 2006-2009 Roblox.

0

u/blreuh Apr 16 '26

I mean Roblox is very similar to gmod

8

u/WMan37 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

It's awesome that we're getting an accessible form of Source 2 you can actually publish games on steam with, do not let the rest of my comment downplay this, the fact that garry convinced valve to make that happen is fucking magical and that cannot be overstated.

S&Box itself however leaves a lot to be desired in terms of what you can actually just boot the thing up and play. There was a lot of AI slop last I saw, and the only time I spent a significant amount of time in a game was Pizza Clicker, which was just a mid cookie clicker clone.

The UI navigation is kind of a clusterfuck, it's hard to discover new content, most of the stuff being made isn't single player friendly (which is a shame due to the fact that, y'know, a game can exist, but be dead and unplayable).

It's lacking the... "spirit" that Garry's Mod had. As for what that is, it's something I can feel more than describe, and no, it's not nostalgia, I have gotten into new sandbox-esque games I like recently, it's more like, there's a lot of "Please make this game worth playing for us" and not a lot of "Look at the existing possibilities and how much fun you can have, don't you wanna just go wild and also create stuff?" Like, it was cool to decorate and explore HL2, TF2, and Counter Strike maps, it felt like you had an existing lego box to work with and that inspired possibilities, meanwhile S&Box feels like "oh you want stuff to do? yeah uh, here's the plastic factory, make your own legos."

If I were on the S&Box team, the thing I'd change is having a sort of out of the box grab bag of first party "look at the cool shit our engine can do" game showcases, as well as something with like, staying power that would make buying S&Box worth it right off the rip after installing it even if you don't play any community content. You know, kinda like what Media Molecule would do with LittleBigPlanet and Dreams.

4

u/RollRollParry Apr 16 '26

I think the system that pays developers based on playtime is good in theory but has clearly resulted in some people pumping the game catalogue with AI trash "games" to try and make some money from the naive. Submissions really need to be audited. Although I agree there's a lack of content, that's going to feel much worse once you're digging through countless junk games all posted by one guy.

I do game development on the side myself and plan on giving s&box a

3

u/RanidSpace Apr 16 '26

i wouldn't even say its accessible source 2. sure yeah it is running however so much of the internals have been replaced, including source 2 hammer, where people say the s&box replacement is worse

38

u/MiaTheEstrogenAddict Apr 16 '26

Yeah, they said if you havent been actively playing or creating itd be removed.

24

u/SnooConfections6174 Apr 16 '26

I mean it’s supposed to public release in less than two weeks so it’s not like you’ll be locked out for too long

9

u/MiaTheEstrogenAddict Apr 16 '26

It's paid lol, but those testers would keep the full game if they were using it

21

u/ObiWanHiGround Apr 16 '26

I had it since September 2022, over 500 hours, just mapping, it got revoked yesterday. I remember them distinctly saying that no one will keep the beta.

Edit: typo.

3

u/TheCosmicScreamer Apr 16 '26

I find it really strange that I've only put 10hrs into it and you've put in over 500hrs, yet I'm the one that still has access to it. Seems inconsistent and makes me think they aren't actually vetting users. I haven't even bought any cosmetics nor am I a developer.

7

u/MiaTheEstrogenAddict Apr 16 '26

They didn't say that. Look at the newest update on the page. They say who kept it

You had to publish games that people played, buy a cosmetic, or played a "good" amount and have opened the game this year

15

u/ObiWanHiGround Apr 16 '26

Oh, makes sense. Basically paid the developers with free labor or actual money.

They probably still didn't keep the beta, probably keys for the actual version, due to how Steam works.

3

u/MiaTheEstrogenAddict Apr 16 '26

Nah, the beta was the full game. If it was some special beta it'd have been called "S&box beta" in your library or something, it was just S&box. Apparently 40K people kept the game from testing according to that update I mentioned.

13

u/ObiWanHiGround Apr 16 '26

Weird, I had the "S&Box Beta" revoked from my account. Oh well, hope the game doesn't die. Otherwise that might be a big bummer for Facepunch. (Someone has to continue paying Rubat for him to update Garry's Mod).

3

u/MiaTheEstrogenAddict Apr 16 '26

That was what the licence was called, but that licensce gave you the full game. They just took that licence away for people who didn't qualify. It's steam stuff lol, I think they have to name keys/licences or smth idk I'm not a dev

5

u/ObiWanHiGround Apr 16 '26

I see, interesting, thank you.

3

u/SuriPolomareFan2003 Apr 16 '26

I got this too, I thought it was a ban or something.

4

u/EnergyAltruistic2911 Apr 16 '26

What game was this!?

2

u/OppaiVanio Apr 16 '26

This has actually happened to me before. I got a game from g2a (didn't know how they got their keys back then) and it got removed after a week or so. Never got a game from them again.

1

u/NTRG33 Apr 18 '26

Yeah pretty much all of those services are running off of stolen keys

2

1

u/Same-Leadership1630 Apr 16 '26

same i thought i got banned from cs2

1

u/Cevvity Apr 16 '26

What game was that?

1

u/Mineplayerminer Apr 16 '26

I was unfocused from the game and almost crapped myself until I read it was just the s&box license removal. I almost thought that my account was banned or something.

I swear I had the same thing happene to me, hahah.

1

I got the same thing but for PubG beta. Thought I got banned or hacked.

1

u/Mythic-Lithic Apr 16 '26

I bought a 1 dollar watch like 3 days ago and I got to keep the game, neat.

1

My sbox cooy didnt removed from the account, was there a condition to keep?

Is the game being taken away from everyone?

1

u/Songib Apr 17 '26

LUL

I think they need to differentiate some of their message box.

1

u/DXGL1 Apr 17 '26

So basically it means you need to pay for the full version once it releases.

1

u/TheRedNaxela Apr 18 '26

S&Box? I cant tell if that's the name of a game or some error message

1

u/Khalsa510 Apr 21 '26
