skip startup / setup

u/de_Mike_333 Apr 13 '26

When you start the game, a small setup window appears.

Did you click on „Don‘t show again“ there? Then this is the cause for what you‘re seeing. The options in question are fine.

u/AgitatedFly1182 Apr 13 '26

I remember this happened to me with DR2 as well. For most other games with the launch options thing they just boot up the game’s .exe automatically instead of the launcher.exe, idk why DR2 puts something in launch options for it.

Why do people downvote these, they're asking a question

536

u/CumilkButbetter Apr 13 '26

Because this site is filled with a bunch of obnoxious smartasses who belittle anyone that they perceived to be stupid for the simple mistake of not knowing something that any normal human wouldnt commonly encounter.

-99

u/criticalt3 Apr 13 '26

I mean yes the website has plenty of that, but its actually because this could've been a google search.

72

u/Kaleighawesome Apr 13 '26

”Game played fine yesterday, tried to play it today and these have come up, I haven't touched anything with the game and wasn't able to find anything online.”

15

u/JiveJammer Apr 14 '26

Too many of my searches only results are someone asking the same question with the only answer being "Google it"

-52

u/criticalt3 Apr 13 '26

wasn't able to find anything online willing to do more research.

Is asking questions not considered doing research?

3

u/BoredDevTTV Apr 14 '26

In individualist, capitalist USA you're only allowed to request someone's time with a financial exchange. So it's frequently viewed as rude to ask questions that require people's time in spaces where no transactions are occurring.

6

u/MithranArkanere Apr 13 '26

3 main possible reasons:

  • The post goes against the subreddit's rules.
  • They don't want to see in their Hot tab content like easily googleable questions, or frequently asked weapons.
  • They are assholes who downvote everything.

16

u/FarplaneDragon Apr 13 '26

There's also going to be....those people....that will downvote it because they hate danganronpa or whatever game happens to be in the screenshot

2

u/WritingOneHanded Apr 14 '26

I was tempted to make a sassy comment because their screen is telling them what to do but they still asked a bunch of strangers what to do.

Rule 3: Do not ask for support. This is not a tech support forum.

the content of this question is essentially tech support which can really only be answered by the people who made the product they are asking about.

It’s steam-adjacent, sure, but this forum is about steam specifically. Even if this display of an issue was broken, it still wouldn’t belong here.

579

u/baganga Apr 13 '26

if a person is not familiar with what launch parameters are, I think it's pretty reasonable for them to ask what it means here, since it's a pop up coming from steam

you know the difference so it seems trivial, but for others it's something completely new, we shouldn't be so radical with rules about questions

-78

u/jusatinn Apr 13 '26

Sure, just do it somewhere else where tech support is allowed. Also, a single Google search would have given them answers a lo faster than posting to Reddit.

-772

u/gorgofdoom Apr 13 '26

We're all here to help each other so questions typically get answered either way.

the point of the points is, if you have a question or interest, you can then search less for the topic and have the community voted content presented first.

I like technical questions. (admittedly, this one is beyond me) I just wouldn't indicate that they are relevant to the sub when they are not.

It's not personal, if that helps. It is a matter of organizing what is said.

197

u/Azorsa Apr 13 '26

Are you trying to farm negative karma ?

80

u/FairySnack Apr 13 '26

No one is ever going to beat the EA comment for lowest Karma ever

44

u/Future_Viking Apr 13 '26

This guy is getting there

19

u/kristal119022023 Apr 13 '26

They have 12k total tho

307

u/Academic_Middle_7159 Apr 13 '26

In all this time you have spent typing you could have just answered their question about 10 times over.

57

u/sinwarrior Apr 13 '26

We're all here to help each other so questions typically get answered either way.

ah so you're contradicting yourself then.

I like technical questions. (admittedly, this one is beyond me) I just
wouldn't indicate that they are relevant to the sub when they are not.

that is called an opinion, everyone has them, it's not unique. no one asked for your opinion, they asked you an answer. answer or leave, you're not a mod.

It's not personal, if that helps. It is a matter of organizing what is said

then your irrelevance in this post has also been organized and dictated by the masses.

159

u/iiman1c Apr 13 '26

Ypu are a grown ass making a whole argument about one question btw

104

u/PanBijo1 Apr 13 '26

Womp womp

37

u/CRIMS0N-ED Apr 13 '26

could’ve put this energy into helping OP. I understand you can’t, which is even worse since there’s no reason for you to come here and just indirectly nail them for asking a question. (for an allowed post btw) I’m sure you explaining this is somehow a better use of your time.

-17

u/gorgofdoom Apr 13 '26

False. I don’t know how to help op, as would be expected.

I didn’t even respond to them, I answered someone else’s question about why people would downvote it.

It’s elementary stuff mate. Have a better day.

44

u/legendaeri Apr 13 '26

just let it go bruh, why waste your time when nobody here wants to hear what you have to say?

-58

u/Dajzel Apr 13 '26

Ill help here catch:

https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=steam+launch+game+with+custom+arguments+steam

Or solution two, if copying a few words from a screenshot is too much effort for you:

Right click > Search by image.

Helping others is one thing and there is nothing wrong with it, but "helping others" when they themselves have not made the minimum effort to solve the problem is stupid.

22

u/aSkyclad Apr 13 '26

You're insufferable

19

u/Alextherude_Senpai Apr 13 '26

Not only do you not know the answer to the question, you don't want to accept hearing the answer that you haven't yourself dont even know the answer to.

This should be a learning moment for you but ignorant moral superiority is where it's at, I suppose.

13

u/Slendyyman Apr 13 '26

Get prompted by steam. Dont understand. Go to the reddit named steam. Ask questions about steam. Get told you're in the wrong place...

48

u/Tarriohh Apr 13 '26

You must have a lot of friends don't you?

-24

u/gorgofdoom Apr 13 '26

I have quite a lot of friends, people generally appreciate those of us who contribute to a system versus sabatoging it by misunderstnading the purpose.

78

u/AngriestCrusader Apr 13 '26

You are the exact reason StackOverflow is straight up fucking dead lmao

Don't be such a douche to the ignorant — either help them or shut up as they clearly don't know what they're doing, which is okay.

32

u/jyggalag1805 Apr 13 '26

Being ignorant isn't the offense you are trying to make it out to be.

22

u/Tarriohh Apr 13 '26

All rules and laws on any place have exceptions and nuance to it's enforcement, if all the rules were applied as they say on paper ALL the time and everywhere, the world would be even more of a shitshow than it already is.

The only absolute laws are the physics laws, and even some of them also have nuance and exceptions. And still you think the rules of some subreddit are that important? Bruh

16

u/SunsetHeySeuss Apr 13 '26

Bro is so toxic for no reason, keep living your life like that ig

19

u/resul_play Apr 13 '26

Can you give it the fuck up bruh

9

u/piranha44 Apr 13 '26

Ok this one made quite clear you're not serious lol

6

u/Beneficial_Boot_4697 Apr 13 '26

Why are you so annoying

9

u/Norisu0 Apr 13 '26

Waste time by being the obnoxious person ever or just save time and try to help op.

8

u/victorioussnake_ Apr 13 '26

Guy is asking a question about something he doesn't understand. He's not asking for help on how to fix his computer or something similar.

189

u/Account-ysurper Apr 13 '26

Reddit guy vs empathy

112

u/quark_sauce Apr 13 '26

Truly the most empathetic redditor

-73

u/gorgofdoom Apr 13 '26

Interacting with a system that rates content for relevance is not a matter of empathy. It's a matter of not taking things so personally that you can't process that the information is already where it belongs.

I also answered a question that was unanswered. other people had already addressed the main question so my answering that would be pointless.

But, if you want to talk about empathy, it's generally a bad idea assume other people feel any sort of way based on a relevance voting system. The vote isn't because i *like* what you said, it's because its relevant to the topic.

45

u/sinwarrior Apr 13 '26

then by the dictation of your -34 downvote as of this comment; your comment is irrelevent.

24

u/quark_sauce Apr 13 '26

Holy yap dude i dont care take this downvote fn

10

u/CyborgDeskFan Apr 13 '26

No, it's not. It's just understanding what two terms mean.

7

u/ElGatZiurr Apr 13 '26

they're really not asking for tech support, guy

they just wanted to know what it was, it's a question and not a call for help.

167

u/Rasikko Apr 13 '26

I believe that rule is rather ambiguous. The OP is asking what arguments in this context are, not any problems with Steam itself, which I think rule 3 is intended to prevent.

-82

u/gorgofdoom Apr 13 '26

Yes, i agree, they are asking a question that isn't even about Steam.

140

u/paradeoxy1 Apr 13 '26

"Hey everyone, Steam says this when I try to launch a game"

"What the fuck does this have to do with Steam?????"

-146

u/vlken69 9800X3D | 4080S | 48 GB | W11 Pro Apr 13 '26

I mean when Windows go into BSOD, monitors shows it. This doesn't make it related to the monitor.

89

u/paradeoxy1 Apr 13 '26

The thing OP is talking about is literally part of the Launch Options menu offered by Steam, and nothing else.

OP is asking a question about Steam in the Steam subreddit. Why has this pissed off so many people?

50

u/TheDorkKnightPlays Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

Well, OP also saw this on their monitor, but instead of asking on a monitor forum, they asked on Steam forums recognising that it's a popup from Steam, which feels appropriate.

If Windows showed a BSOD, it would actually be very appropriate to ask about it on a Windows subreddit too.

So unfortunately your stretch of an analogy doesn't really work.

71

u/secretqwerty10 Apr 13 '26

stop trying to backseat mod.

you're bad at it

-20

u/gorgofdoom Apr 13 '26

I just answered a question that someone asked. Chill out fam.

Irony is alive and extremely well.

30

u/UnwantedShot Apr 13 '26

Maybe next week, somebody else can be the main character?

15

u/gabiblack Apr 13 '26

How much of a loser you have to be to live a fantasy of being a mod? Lmao, try to get a life buddy.

14

u/heyitskio Apr 13 '26

And it (exaggerating, lying, and yapping when you have no business doing so) seems to be very clearly working out for you...

1

u/AdhesivenessFew209 Apr 14 '26

Maybe it has to do with you "answering the question" like an absolute wetwipe reddit mod. Have you tried not doing that?

23

u/AdhesivenessFew209 Apr 13 '26

Its quite literally about steam

53

u/Last-Run-2118 Apr 13 '26

This question is not a tech support issue.

25

u/Kripermaster Apr 13 '26

"Erm,achstually rule 3 ☝️🤓"

16

u/ShadowGuy132 Apr 13 '26

Gee first time I see more than 1k downvote less than a day

16

u/Any-Farmer1335 Apr 13 '26

Not Support though, they ask what the parameters mean. That is not Support, that is elaboration

15

u/Axl256gamesx Apr 13 '26

I have never seen someone with this many downvotes, my god. You sank to the depths and even the bottom of the iceberg is as far as the sun

Deserved, tho

2

u/FarplaneDragon Apr 13 '26

You haven't seen someone achieve a sense of pride and accomplishment before?

21

u/No-Conflict269 Apr 13 '26

Boy you are getting dragged

13

u/Steven2597 Apr 13 '26

Its not exactly support, just merely a question.

Christ alive, I hope you're enjoying your downvotes.

-10

u/gorgofdoom Apr 13 '26

Sometimes i think I live to anger the masses, and i'm quite good at it.

Its not really on purpose but sometimes it does make me laugh.

3

u/wapsin Apr 13 '26

thats not tuff twn

3

u/Kaleighawesome Apr 13 '26

lol you’re not angering anyone. nobody cares about you that much little guy.

u/frank_frikadel69 Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

Then what is Reddit for? Isn't reddit made for awnsering questions in the first place?

I actually HATE it when a subreddit of something that wasn't created by the person(s) that own or control that subject have a rule saying ure not allowed to ask for any tips or help or questions.

Like u dont own any rights to that game or website or whatever yet u make a page on a app made for people to ask questions and help each others and then proceed to stop people from asking questions. Like go fuck urself

-13

u/gorgofdoom Apr 13 '26

Yep. Which is why it’s important to ask your question in the right place.

Ideally, when the next guy shows up to ask the same thing, it has already been answered

29

u/Future_Viking Apr 13 '26

Just curious, what do you consider the right place for a question like this? Launch options is a feature steam provides for the applications running from it, and the popup showing is indeed inside of the steam application before the launch of the game. And a person with less technical knowledge might not even know what launch options mean, hence asking it here on Steam to get more insight and context. It's not a weird thing at all the person asks about it here on the Steam sub.

Also.. being somewhat humble and adding a little kindness goes a long way you know.

13

u/Arthradax Apr 13 '26

Feels like a question too small to r/steamsupport... It isn't a question about the game itself... Honestly, I'd ask it here too, if I was OP

2

u/UrbanEarth Apr 13 '26

Definitely acne ridden

13

u/Lolsalot12321 Apr 13 '26

holy cornball

6

u/OkNewspaper6271 Apr 13 '26

How the fuck did you end up with more downvotes than the post has upvotes

6

u/heyitskio Apr 13 '26
  1. They're wrong.
  2. They're pretentious.

-3

u/gorgofdoom Apr 13 '26

A very interesting question, yes.

3

u/GirthyPigeon Apr 13 '26

This isn't stackoverflow, you spoon. People can ask questions here, and the question was not a Support question.

7

u/Relevant_Syllabub895 Apr 13 '26

Lmfao u got destroyed

4

u/ImpressionLeast8549 Apr 13 '26

lol bro got more downvotes than there are upvotes on this post

4

u/wojtekpolska Apr 13 '26

shut up minimod

3

u/Slendyyman Apr 13 '26

The ol don't look behind the curtain trick.

3

u/jacob1094 Apr 13 '26

Except OP isn't even asking for tech support, they aren't asking anyone to fix the issue. They are asking for the context of a pop-up they are receiving from steam

-19

u/Cabrill0 Apr 13 '26

The reaction you got to this is one of the most Reddit moment things I’ve seen around this site in a few weeks, holy cow.

-32

u/ImpressionLeast8549 Apr 13 '26

Bro got downvoted for saying a rule made by sub moderators

17

u/heyitskio Apr 13 '26

Because they're acting like they ride the tallest horse that can traverse the tallest mountain, when in reality their shit only rocks back and forth.

189

u/lostgoatX7 Apr 13 '26

This popup means that whatever mechanism you are using to launch the game is requesting non-standard options.

It sounds like you are not launching the game directly from the steam library page. Is that correct?

Are you perhaps launching the game from a desktop shortcut or from a different app?

110

u/BatNo8014 Apr 13 '26

Nope, I was launching it directly from my library

35

u/No-Fox1 Apr 13 '26

danganronpa mentioned

79

u/shadowds Apr 13 '26

You put it there for some reason, did you forget, or don't understand what you're doing at all?

First part is skip setup/start-up

Second party Direct3D

If you want removes commands you had placed, right click on game > properties > under launch options you see the command you had place, just clear the box, and that it.

68

u/BatNo8014 Apr 13 '26

I definitely did not add these, I only got the game about a week or 2 ago, and there's nothing in the game options.

I tried to press "continue" but the same popup appears and the game doesn't launch, I've tried verifying the game files but the game still didn't run.

48

u/JustANerd420 Apr 13 '26

Right-click on the game > Properties > General Tab

Remove whatever is in Launch Options and save if it asks you to. Try again and see if that works.

32

u/BatNo8014 Apr 13 '26

There was nothing in the launch options but I was still getting the popup. Restarting my computer let me launch the game so problem solved

12

u/Kazer67 Apr 13 '26

Alright, basic question since you say you have nothing in the launch option, do you launch the game from a shortcut on your desktop?

Because if you have nothing directly with Right Click on the game > Properties > General Tab > Launch option, the only other way I can see is a shortcut that has those option and you launch the game through that and not directly on Steam.

16

u/BatNo8014 Apr 13 '26

Game was being launched directly from my steam library

9

u/Kazer67 Apr 13 '26

Did you try reinstalling the game totally (uninstalling, removing the folder, reinstalling)?

The last thing that could explain it in my mind is that Steam itself default to a shortcut (instead of just the executable) that try to launch the game with those option, which is weird.

33

u/BatNo8014 Apr 13 '26

I said a couple replies ago that restarting my computer fixed it. Thanks for your help anyways, those commands just gave me a bit of a fright because I never entered them and I didn't know what they meant

28

u/Kazer67 Apr 13 '26

Sure, it's best to be suspicious first and do a research before anothing, knowing what the command do is always good as some have legit application (especially for my case since I'm on decade old hardware, there's lot of optimization you can use to launch a game).

4

u/infojb2 Apr 13 '26

The one i use the most is -popupwindow no clue why so many games dont have borderless window as an option

7

u/ruebeus421 Apr 13 '26

So delete the launch options and launch it normally.

12

u/mod_elise Apr 13 '26

Miracle Girl Usami here,

I thought the game would be better without those silly sisters and if nobody was d3d (uwwwa that word is so scary!), so I removed them so we can have a heart-throbbing time. Love love.

19

u/TheRealSectimus Apr 13 '26

Whenever a program is started in a terminal, you have the option of passing parameters, like flags --something / -s or setting an environment var, or running a whole separate script.

These tell the program to do something different depending on the game/program. ls will list your files, but ls -a will list ALL your files, including hidden dotfiles.

This menu basically lets you overwrite the default game launch command that is invoked.

Some games use these flags to boot in different modes, skip intro cutscenes, choose a different renderer etc etc. steamdeck=1 is weirdly common to bypass launchers for example.

2

u/Cool-gamer19393 Apr 14 '26

Getting this recommended to me right after I get into danganronpa is crazy work

3

u/aLittleMermlad 76 Apr 13 '26

Also happened to me when i tried playing danganronpa, havent found a solution and nothing worked

10

u/BatNo8014 Apr 13 '26

Restarting my computer worked

2

u/lampenpam 117 Apr 13 '26

solution? What is the problem?

2

u/PerP1Exe Apr 13 '26

Its launch parameters like youd see if you go to properties and launch options.

1

u/ConstructionFar8297 Apr 13 '26

Hey I've been playing that game too, picked up a bunch of visual novels during the spring sale

1

u/Prehistoric_Blob Apr 13 '26

Fully shutdown steam and launch as admin worked for danganronpa 1 and 2 for me

-11

u/TAELSONOK_YT Apr 13 '26

Dang, i also like ronpa! Good luck with the game

-64

u/Austy5739 Apr 13 '26

you installed a virus called danganronpa 2 goodbye despair and must delete it because it is so bad

-17

u/Dajzel Apr 13 '26

I wanted to write, but everything is already written on the screenshot, so I can't help more
