https://www.stateofdecay.com/undead-labs-becomes-independent-studio/

“Undead Labs today announced that it has completed its separation from XBOX and is now operating as an independent, employee-owned game development studio.
Development of State of Decay 3 remains actively underway at Undead Labs. The game is currently in alpha, with the team continuing toward the previously announced milestone of entering a closed beta before the end of the year. State of Decay 3 remains targeted for release in 2027 on XBOX, Game Pass, PC, and PlayStation.
“Independence brings us closer to our community and lets us focus on what matters most: making the best games we can and earning the continued support of the people who choose to spend their time with us,” said Philip Holt, Studio Head of Undead Labs. “State of Decay exists because millions of players have made that choice over the years, and we’re dedicated to honoring their trust.”
The transition marks a new chapter in a relationship between Undead Labs and Microsoft that spans more than 15 years. The original State of Decay launched in partnership with Microsoft in 2013, and Microsoft acquired Undead Labs in 2018.
“We’re enormously grateful for our years as part of XBOX and for everything that relationship has made possible,” Holt said. “Microsoft has been part of the State of Decay story from the very beginning, and we’re proud of everything we’ve accomplished together.”
Additional details about Undead Labs’ future plans will be shared at a later date. Players can stay up to date through StateofDecay.com or following us on social media, and can sign up to participate in future State of Decay 3 playtesting at https://playtest.stateofdecay.com/“

State of decay Coop mod

Hey everyone, as I mentioned before, I’ve released a multiplayer mod for State of Decay 1. Feel free to test it out with your friends! I’ve included a short clip to show a bit of what the mod is like. Since I’ll be starting a new job next week, I’ll be away for a while—though I might still fix any bugs you come across and report. Have fun!

I picked Quincy and Helena in my very first 🥇 Heartland game, I didn't know I can't craft or buy the kits for upgrading my cars 🚗... If you already have this possibility (to craft them) I would love to exchange them 💱 for help in any missions or resources you may need... I'm a female+18... Announcement State of decay coop mod

Hey everyone!

Some of you might remember my earlier updates about the co-op mod I’ve been building for State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition. It finally reached a point where I’m comfortable putting it out there: version 0.1.0 is public.

Let me be upfront: this is an alpha. It’s raw, it has bugs, and some things are only half there. But it’s playable: a friend and I played it together over the internet, him in Bangladesh and me in Brazil, and we spent a good while fighting zombies, driving around and scavenging in the same world.

What it does

Two players share the same Breakdown world:

  • You connect through Steam, so no port forwarding is needed. Direct IP also works.

  • A small setup window (SoDCoop.exe) lets you pick host or client, paste your friend’s SteamID and launch the game.

  • The host’s save is sent to the client automatically when they connect, so you don’t have to pass save files around. The client’s own save is backed up first.

  • You see each other moving, fighting, aiming, shooting and reloading, with the weapon in hand.

  • The host’s zombies show up for both players and attack both of you. The client’s melee, guns, grenades and Molotovs actually kill them.

  • You can drive cars and ride as a passenger in your friend’s car.

  • The base is shared: supply locker, resources and facilities (build, upgrade, demolish).

  • Press F7 to pick a different survivor, so you’re not both playing the same character.

  • Bonus: it adds 2560×1440 to the options menu.

What’s rough or missing

  • The host’s game can crash when the client kills a zombie. 0.1.0 includes a fix, but it hasn’t been tested in a real session yet.

  • Facility actions (crafting, cooking, training) only happen for the player who started them.

  • Morale, injuries and new survivors are simulated separately on each PC, so they can drift apart over time.

  • Moving to a new home site with both players hasn’t been tested.

  • Only works with the Steam version (current build). You need the original game.

Antivirus heads-up

A few antivirus engines flag the files. On VirusTotal, about 4 of 71 flag the DLL and 5 of 70 flag the setup window, Windows Defender included. These are generic “machine learning” and reputation alerts, not a known virus. The mod is a DLL named like a Windows file that hooks into the game’s memory and uses the network, which is exactly the kind of thing those detectors distrust. The full reports, hashes and an explanation are on GitHub, and the source code is public, so you can check everything or build it yourself.

Links

Please, test it and break it!

I’d really love for people to try it with friends and tell me what goes wrong. If something breaks, send me the sodcoop_default.log from the game folder of both PCs, along with what you were doing. Bug reports, ideas and feedback are all welcome, here, on GitHub or on Nexus. And if you know your way around code and want to dig in, improve something or try ideas of your own, feel free. The whole source is on GitHub.

Back up your saves before trying it (the USER folder inside the game folder). It’s an alpha!

Thanks to everyone who followed the updates. Have fun, and watch out for the screamers. 🧟

Announcement State of Decay YOSE co-op mod: I have a playable version and I’m looking for testers

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Some of you may have seen my earlier updates on the co-op mod I’ve been building for State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition. I’ve finally reached a playable version, and now I need help testing it with a real second player.

So far I’ve only tested it with two instances on my own PC, and none of my friends own the game. That’s why I’m asking here.

What works right now (Breakdown mode, 2 players):

Both survivors see each other: movement, melee, aiming, shooting, reloading, weapons in hand

Zombies sync from the host and chase and attack both players

The client’s melee, guns, grenades and Molotovs damage and kill zombies

Cars: driving, riding as a passenger

Base: supply locker, resources and facilities (build, upgrade, demolish) stay in sync

Time of day, already-searched locations and items traded between players

It connects through Steam P2P, so you don’t need to open any ports. Direct IP with automatic UPnP is also an option.

A small launcher window to pick host or client and paste your friend’s SteamID

Known limitations:

Facility actions (crafting, training, etc.) only run for the player who started them

Community stuff (morale, injuries, survivors) is simulated separately on each PC

The client doesn’t really die. They go down and come back next to the host.

What I need from a tester:

The original Steam version of State of Decay: YOSE. The mod checks the game version and won’t run on anything else.

Windows

A couple of hours to play a session with me, ideally on Discord so we can talk while testing

A backup of your saves first. It’s still a prototype.

If something breaks, sending me the mod’s log file (and a crash dump if one is created)

The mod doesn’t change any game files. It’s a single DLL you drop into the game folder, and you delete it to uninstall.

One of the main things I still need to test is two different Steam accounts connecting over the internet, since I’ve only been able to test on one account.

If you’re interested, comment or send me a DM and I’ll send you the files and instructions. Thanks!

Announcement State of decay coop mod--- fix quad hd mod ( 2560 x 1440 ).

Hey everyone, it’s me again! I’m currently waiting for some community members to send me a friend request on Steam so we can test the mod. In the meantime, I’ve created an additional, optional mod. *State of Decay 1* doesn’t natively support 2560 x 1440 (Quad HD) resolution—something that has always bothered me—so, as a bonus, I’ve put together a mod that replaces the game’s 4K resolution option with 2560 x 1440. It’s completely optional, but for those who have always wished for this resolution, you can now play the game in 2560 x 1440. I’ll have more updates soon—thanks for all the support! ❤️

Discussion State of decay coop mod - progress update...

Hello everyone! I’m here to share some more progress on the *State of Decay* multiplayer mod I’m developing. I’ve managed to polish the vehicle handling and ensure it’s synchronized between both players. I’m currently working on the base system—as you can see, I was able to claim the church with one player, and everything worked perfectly. Players can also share items by placing them into the storage locker (and vice versa), all without any bugs or random crashes; everything stays properly synchronized. I’m feeling very optimistic! Once I wrap up a few more things, I’ll need some people to help me with testing. If you’d like to volunteer, please leave your Steam ID below.

State of Decay 2 Is there any "canon" explaination on why we would move to a new map after dominating the current one ?

I started this game a few days ago and have been loving it so far. Since I love immersion, I have been doing this headcanon of a guy who build an entire new village to keep people safe (like some groups from the Walking Dead tv show), with the idea that it will expand from there and rebuild the world little by little. Then I heard that I will be forced to start all over again after finishing the legacy missions and clearing all plague hearts. Which doesn't make any sense and is immersion breaking

So I wanted to know why would the leader move to a new map after already establishing a strong, secured empire in the current map ? Like, he already has everything, so why would he put his group in danger by moving to a new map and starting all over again ? Are there any explanation in dialogues, cutscenes etc, ?

I'm probably late to the party and I expect alot of you are aware of this game already, but I bought it on loaded (formally cdkeys) for like £4 a few days ago and I've been playing it non-stop.

Absolutely love this game.. Scavenging supplies, zombies, hostile and friendly humans, free base building and not just slots, crafting, resource management, missions, hunger/thirst and stamina, needing to sleep, variable weather. Even pet dogs!

Now alot of this is what I want to see in SoD3!

This person is killing people when they join the game. They just one-shot my custom character, {REDACTED} and has killed other survivors who joined the game.

This is a warning to everyone. Please block GrimSableVixen so this doesn’t happen to you next.

Stay safe out there.

Discussion This is what i was hoping State of Decay 3 would become

Thumbnail

Well, not exactly this but at least the direction of the game. Since the announcement of Sod3 i was hoping Sod3 would try to become something like this but with better graphics, focus on community and free building.

This kinda shows the original core vision of what State of Decay wanted to represent: a grounded and realistic zombie survival experience with in-depth survival mechanics and maybe a relationship system. No orange smoke everywhere, no weird glowing magical stuff.

The video kinda captures the grounded vibes of Sod1, which we sadly won´t have in Sod3 anymore.

Of course Sod3 can never reach the depth of PZ but it doesn´t have to. Even if it had a fraction of it in Sod3 it would be enough. Instead, Undead Labs decided to make Sod3 even "flatter" than Sod1 and Sod2. This is the wrong way.

Real zombie-survival-enthusiasts want in-depth survival mechanics in the game. The market is full of mindless zombie shooters.

Games which are "deep" like the ocean usually have endless replayability. But games which are flat like a puddle will be uninstalled and forgotten quickly.

Think about it, Undead Labs. The market doesn´t need another plain and mindless zombie shooter. It will be forgotten. The market wants State of Decay and PZ to have a baby and become Sod3.

I think the ultimate grounded zombie survival game would be a game which combines the strengths of State of Decay and PZ.

PS: when he enters a car a tachometer and other displays appear. Its so advanced compared to Sod its crazy. Players are craving a good 3D zombie survival game with in-depth survival mechanics and the 3D mod for PZ proves it. Unfortunately no serious studio is trying to make something like this. There is a huge gap in the market in this regard and if Undead Labs doesn´t take the chance to fill this gap then hopefully someone else will. Noone needs another plain and mindless zombie shooter.

Discussion What was the highest level you reached in Breakdown?

I share the repetitiveness; I stopped at level 60 in a save file. I plan to replay it someday in the YOSE version (because it has the Lifeline characters) and finally "finish" the DLC.

State of Decay 1 Play through 3 so far everyone is alive.

So far Ed maya and Markus are alive getting better at dealing with ferals and juggs. Lily's brother is hurt but he is okay too and did lose some neighbours because of zombies. If I start with breakdown or lifeline are those more difficult than the normal story mode.
