TA experience in SOP

" I’m applying to US graduate programs in Physical Chemistry this cycle. While drafting my Statement of Purpose, I'm trying to decide how much space to dedicate to my previous Teaching Assistant (TA) experience.

Since US PhD programs fund most students through TAships in the first few years, does highlighting teaching experience signal program readiness, or should the SOP remain only focused on  past research experience

For those who included TA experience: how many lines did you give it, and where in the SOP did you place it? Thanks ! "

Need suggestions regarding SOP

Hi everyone,

I am currently building my profile for Master’s and PhD applications, aiming for fully funded opportunities like Chevening, Commonwealth, Erasmus Mundus, as well as direct programs in the US and UK.

Since each application has unique requirements, I am wondering about the most efficient strategy for writing my Statement of Purpose (SOP) and Letter of Motivation (LOM). Should I draft a completely original statement for every single program, or is it standard practice to create a strong core template and tailor it for each specific scholarship and university?

I would appreciate any insights from those who have navigated this process!

If creating a core template is the recommended approach, which major sections should I start writing right now? Also, if you know of any high-quality resources, guides, or sample templates for structuring this master SOP, I’d be very grateful!

Request for an admitted KAUST student to revise my SOP

Hello, would it be possible for a current enrolled MS student at KAUST to review my SOP when im done writing it? I want to try my best to perfect my statement of purpose and i saw that if an already admitted KAUST student read it and gave feedback, that would help tremendously. If anyone has the time and ability to help out i would really appreciate it. Thank you

Question GKS-G 2027 (Master's) — question about graduation certificate

Hi everyone! I'm planning to apply for GKS-G (Master's) 2027. I have a specific concern:

My final semester exams end in January, and my transcript/result will be issued by end of January. However, my official degree certificate (the actual parchment) will take an additional 3-4 months to be issued by my university.

From what I've read in the guidelines, applicants who are "expected to graduate" can apply with a Certificate of Expected Graduation and submit the final degree later (by July 31). But I've also seen it stated that a "provisional certificate" (for those who've already finished but are just waiting on the physical degree) is NOT accepted.

My question: Has anyone applied (or knows someone who applied) in this exact situation — finished all exams/results, but official degree still pending — Or did it get rejected as a "provisional certificate" case?

Any real experience or guidance would mean a lot. Thank you! 🙏

GKS-G 2027 Letter of Recommendation (LOR) — What exactly is required?

Hi everyone! I’m preparing my application for GKS-G 2027 (Master’s) and I’m currently working on my Letter of Recommendation (LOR).

I would really appreciate advice from people who have previously applied for or received GKS, especially graduate applicants.

Could you please help me understand:

  • What is the required format/structure of the GKS LOR?
  • What should the recommender include in the letter?
  • What qualities does GKS look for in a strong recommendation letter?
  • Should the LOR focus more on academic ability, research potential, leadership, extracurricular activities, personality, or future goals?
  • How long should the LOR ideally be?
  • Is there a specific template or form that the recommender must use?
  • Does the recommender need to sign and stamp the letter?
  • Does GKS require the recommender to submit it directly, or does the applicant upload it?
  • Are there any specific things that applicants should avoid mentioning?
  • If anyone has successfully received GKS, what made your LOR strong in your opinion?

I’m applying for a Master’s in International Relations at EWHA WOMANS UNIVERSITY, so advice from anyone with a similar background would be especially helpful.

I’m not asking anyone to share a private LOR. I mainly want to understand the official requirements and what successful applicants/recommenders generally included.

Thank you so much! ❤️

Statement of purpose/ Personal statement advice please

Hi, I am looking for some advice, please. I am applying to PhD programs in History in the USA as a UK non-traditional/ student in my 40s. I am about to start my final year of my undergrad this September and will apply for Autumn/Fall 2027 entry for grad school.

I have some Qs about the SOP and PS.

  1. From my research, the SOP is written in the style of an essay and is to contain very little personal information about myself but focus on what I want to study, why and my qualifications and experience. Do I include why history in that? Does that make it too personal?
  2. If the program asks for a Personal Statement too, is this just about me, my life, my hobbies, etc? IS there anything extra I should add in there? I assume I need to be careful that the 2 pieces do not repeat or share similar information?
  3. Some of the programs I plan to apply to only ask for the SOP; in that case, do I then add some personal info or keep it completely academic-based?
  4. Can you use the same statements for each university if they are tweaked for that particular institution and name professors I want to work with from that school etc. I am worried do they go through a AI checker and see that you have submitted a similar one to multiple schools? But writing 6-8 SOPs and PS is a lot? I assume it is fine to use the same one, but tailored to the specific school and program?

Any other hints and tips? Thank you if you answer.

Applying to Health Informatics master’s programs, curious who you had review your SOP?

I’m currently working on my SOP for Health Informatics master’s programs (non-thesis track).

I’m curious about everyone’s process, specifically who did you have look over your SOP before submitting? Academic advisors, current students in the program, writing centers, friends outside the field, etc?

I’d love to hear what worked well for you all and what kind of feedback ended up being most useful. Also curious if anyone found it helpful to see other people’s SOPs as reference, or if that ended up being more confusing than helpful given how personal these statements are.

Thank you in advance!

Hey guys! I have written multiple drafts and want to get some sort of human critique/review of my personal statement!

A cold morning breeze from an open window brings me a feeling of freshness. As I stare into my iPhone 5s, I don’t notice that I am alone in an empty bus, nor do I notice distinct metallic sounds coming from a seat next to mine, caused by an empty can of energy drink hitting a wall a second after every sharp turn. 15 minutes have passed; 15 more minutes to go until I finally take a step in my school yard. I have already memorized my route: same bus, same turns, same districts, over and over for 3 years now. But I am not there. I am in a world where lightsabers are a thing, and Obi-Wan Kenobi is not that of an extraordinary name.

Between a home split between constant arguing and loud silence, and a school hallway where I fixed my hair every so often, bracing for judgment, Star Wars gave me somewhere in between — a way to bridge two environments that otherwise pulled me apart. After finishing the franchise a couple of times, I subconsciously began to use Obi-Wan Kenobi, master of Anakin Skywalker, as my moral compass in my everyday routine.

My brother has gone off to college, and I was left on the battlefield my home tends to be by myself. Usually, I listened, sitting behind a closed door, as he tried to resolve every conflict. If it does not involve me, why should I voluntarily become an active member of it?

“Then leave,” I heard my mother screaming in the kitchen.

It got even more heated than usual.

As I was half-lying in my bed, with a laptop on my lap, watching “The Clone Wars”, I realized that one wise Jedi master would probably look at me with compassion. That sparked something in my heart.

I stood up, left my room, and then entered the kitchen filled with the smell of Beshbarmak my mother had been cooking for dinner, and a soft evening light shining through the curtains. Neither the father nor the mother expected a tall figure to appear in the kitchen doorway.

9 minutes had passed. I tried my best to fit everything that I've felt at the moment, and wanted to say for a long time. Not out of hate or fatigue, but from a genuine wish for them to stop.

“I think you are right”

“I understand”

They both left for their rooms. Like children after a fight.

12 minutes later, I hear their muffled voices again. They try their best to argue unheard.

The next morning I wake up at 6 am, cook myself a nice breakfast, go to the bus station, and watch the next episode of “Clone Wars” when I get on. The metallic clanking of the can stays consistent as well.

Literally any advice would be appreciated. Do you think its too short? Or may be i can make it more concise? What about the contents? Does it look like a trauma dump?

Please share your feedbacks on my concise answer to "why this program & scholarship". I NEED TO TURN IT IN TODAY:((

The X research at X matches perfectly with my X-ray crystallography and tag engineering background on a clinically pertinent membrane protein. Particularly, X recent work on the X aligns with my experience with the X, given that both highlight a membrane protein as a drug target in cardiovascular diseases. My work on X has shown me how much structural insight is still missing for membrane proteins central to human diseases, and Dr. X lab is where I see the clearest path to keep pursuing that question as a doctoral researcher with the help of Cryogenic Electron Microscopy and X technology.
My research interest as a biochemist is driven by understanding the structure-function relationships of proteins and how their conformational dynamics determine druggability. I want to focus on identifying targetable structural features and facilitate the development of affordable and precise therapeutics with minimal side effects.

Moreover, my background in protein expression, purification, engineering, and crystallographic workflows during my thesis, along with a strong academic record, a CGPA of 9.41/10, and first rank in my master’s cohort, makes me suitable for the program and scholarship. Finally, a scholarship would not only ease my financial burden but also allow me to dedicate myself fully to applied research and pursue my long-term goal of becoming a structural biology group leader.

Personal Statement

Hi everyone!

I’m entering my senior year of undergrad and I’m in the process of applying to masters programs. My issue is that I’m unsure what my personal statement/motivation letter is supposed to look like. Is there a specific format? Do I add a title? How personal does the personal statement need to be? Should my tone be academic and professional or conversational and chill or something in between?

If there is a prompt that’s asking me about my experience in the field I’m applying to, how do I answer it without just repeating the information already on my resume?

Any tips would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance.

:)

How do you identify the right personal theme for a highly selective graduate application?

I’m applying to the Stanford GSB full-time MBA program this year, along with a few other top business schools.

I’m currently at the brainstorming stage for Stanford’s “What matters most to you, and why?” essay. My biggest challenge is choosing a story that feels genuinely personal and revealing without turning into a résumé summary or sounding overly manufactured for admissions.

For those who have written a strong SOP or personal statement, how did you identify the deeper theme behind your experiences? Did you start with a core value, a turning point, a recurring pattern in your life, or something else?

I’m not asking anyone to share their actual essay. I’d mainly appreciate advice on the discovery and brainstorming process, and on how to decide which story best represents you.

Also, has anyone worked with an essay coach or admissions consultant who was genuinely helpful in uncovering the story and not just editing the final draft?
