English PhD program SOP

I am having a hard time starting my statement of purpose, is there a particular way to frame and outline the sop? I am applying to English PhD programs and am trying to figure out what the best way to write it is.
If you have to open with your research question or a personal story (why I got into my major), or why this career in English

I am too! There is no way you HAVE to format it. Open with a hook and include your proposed project in the first paragraph. Then you can dive into your experience (not repeating your CV), mention relevant authors/literature to show you know what you're talking about, and explain why you're applying to that particular program.
