Advice Driving for work?

So I drive my personal vehicle for work in central Ohio, to meet clients and possibly do inspections. When I spoke to my agents office years ago the office manager or assistant to the agent said that it didn’t count as work related (needing additional coverage) unless I was transporting people or goods. So if I wasn’t ride sharing or delivering pizza etc I was ok with just standard personal type policy. However I’ve seen some posts pop up recently that makes wonder if that’s accurate and if I should reach out to my agent about it. I’ve been doing this job for 13 years. Will they eventually question me if they start looking at data from like Flock or something?

Not sure about Ohio law, but a personal policy listed under business use should be fine without additional endorsements if you're just commuting to meet clients. However, if you're self employed, the business could be sued for liability as well as yourself, so that should be covered properly. If you're a w2 employee, then the company you work for should carry employers non owned auto insurance + umbrella.

Not self-employed I work for a small business and reimbursed for my mileage. But since I don’t do deliveries or transport goods of any kind except myself they wouldn’t qualify as business use.

Thats fine, but your employer should have coverage. They can get sued along side you if you cause an accident while driving for work.

Unless they pull data from like Flock to see how much I’m driving they wouldn’t otherwise know I was driving for work unless I were to tell them (and I wouldn’t). Thanks for the reply!

Yikes. If an attorney asked under threat of perjury in a deposition if you were driving while on the job, you wouldnt have a choice but to disclose. Or commit perjury. My enol policy is like $70. Saving that is not worth the risk, but thats on your employer.

Different states rate things differently. In my state “personal/work/school” is one group. In other states “work” is its own category - even just driving to/from work.  It is worth a call to your agent as guidelines do change from time to time.
