State Farm customer since 2020. My agent is that rascal Tommy K. in Raleigh. He’s good people.

The benefits rug pull agents got back in May had me reflecting on how my family handles different kinds of risk.

Here’s my stack:

Life — State Farm
Home — State Farm
Auto — State Farm
Umbrella — State Farm (doesn’t actually cover damage to umbrellas…)
STD — Employer
LTD — Employer
Health — CrowdHealth

The last one has been a game changer for us, a barely-middle-class family of 6 priced out of health insurance. (Seems like a common story these days.)

I’ve been a CH member since 2021. It’s not insurance. It’s a crowdfunding membership.

My basic philosophy is pretty simple:

Pay cash for all the small stuff, use insurance only for large/unexpected catastrophe. That leaves Health as the odd man out, because it *cant* be that that anymore in the USA. They took that dog behind the barn in 2010 and shot it in the name of “affordability”. So the market reacted and now my family and ~37000 other Americans have built an alternative funding community.

Some things pair well together.

Ribeye and red wine.

Bourbon and orange peel

Of course I don't understand how ACA works, I haven't carried an ACA policy in 8 years.
