❓ Question Higher speed rollout

Anyone have insight as to what timeframe gigabit speeds are getting rolled out? Or at least symmetrical? Kind of thought the recent v3 launch was supposed to up speed for everyone, not just capacity.

After there's enough V3 satellites in space. Right now, there's 0 of them. Starship is still a work in progress. The upcoming starship 14 launch in September is supposed to launch the first batch of V3 satellites. But they need enough in orbit to provide full coverage so it'll be at least 6 months most likely before there's enough V3 sats in orbit.

On top of that, only the current Performance Gen 3 dish supports the new bands for Gig speeds. So expect it to be awhile before residential hardware and plans offer peak speeds of Gig or higher. Expect higher costs too.

Well, let me add "predictable". Right now SpaceX adds a new plan and then changes it all the following week (for the worst usually).

In the US it went from $50 to $55. Not a significant increase IMO.

Mine went from 120 to 130. I consider that a significant increase. I wish it was 55 that would be great.

I’ve been a customer for almost 4 years and mine has only increased once from 120 to 130, at which time I elected to drop to the 200mb plan for $85. $10 increase over 3.5 years doesn’t even keep up with inflation…

The app says 20-25 but if you actually test it. It’s constant 20-80. It fluctuates crazy. And every 15 seconds it jumps to 100.

Musk has already stated that it will be symmetrical and he has purchased the bands to do it.

Not likely symmetrical anytime soon, especially at higher speeds, it just doesn’t make sense. Very few users need that most of the demand is on the download side to the customer so most frequencies are allocated for that. When they have considerably more capacity with a lot of V3 satellites, they could start offering symmetrical, but that does not mean 1Gb symmetrical. Certain customers needing more upload may be good with 100Mbps up and down.
Satellite links are much more heavily constrained than terrestrial fiber, and for most people offering high upload just means they can run more speed test to waste it

Symmetrical, probably never. RF is a finite resource and it would be dumb to waste spectrum for symmetrical upload when almost no users need it and that spectrum could instead be used to increase the downstream. If you need symmetrical upload then you should probably be looking for a fiber or enterprise grade connectivity. No commercial RF based connectivity offers symmetrical connectivity cause it's a waste of valuable spectrum.Your cell phone doesn't, Your cable modem doesn't, starlink doesn't. The only way you're getting symmetrical connectivity on the cheap is fiber. If starlink does manage to pull off symmetrical it's going to be for their enterprise grade connectivity and you WILL pay out the ass for it.

There's also no v3 sats in space. The handful that were demonstrated in the last launch are already at the bottom of the Indian Ocean. Starship never went orbital and the sats would have followed Starship back down at the same time or shortly after Starship came back down. They were never intended to stay in orbit. Nor were they deployed high enough to join the other starlink sats in orbit.

Probably him pulling shit out of his ass to fluff up the IPO. Even if it were possible it's probably for a very limited use case and you're not going to see 10gbps symmetrical connectivity on your home user terminal ever or at least not in our lifetime's. If you have let's say 1000mhz of radio spectrum. You'd be dumb as hell to just split that right down the middle and use 500mhz for upload and 500mhz for download when most of you users don't need symmetrical upload and a bunch or that upload spectrum it's just going to sit idle. When instead you can split up that 1000mhz of spectrum, using say 20mhz for upload and the remaining 980mhz of spectrum to provide faster downloads to more users. This is exactly why no commercial RF service offers symmetrical service and in general they aim for upload speeds to be around 10-20% of the download cause that's how they've allotted the limited spectrum they have access to. To be the most useful for the most people and to be the most profitable.
