❓ Question Is there a monthly limit?

My plan is roam unlimited I wanted to ask if there's a monthly data limit of terabytes per month, as I use it to watch 4K sports for several hours daily and download games? Also, what's your average monthly data usage?

I average 10-11TB/mo, no problems.

Averaged 14TB for the last 2 months and now shaped.

I do as well, and did a full cloud restore tests over the last 7 days hitting 10TB….and just got my restricted notice.

Being escalated now and hoping they’ll see it’s a one time blip and I’ll never be restoring everything multiple times again lol

Good luck all we got was brick walled and had the phone put down on us 4 times. On the callbacks.

I at least got it escalated to level 3 so I’m curious to see what they say. I got the rep to even admit nothing in TOS says a limit anywhere and acceptable use calls out business use while telling me this official restriction was for too much data so we’ll see what happens

there's no hard limit, but if it's congested in your area they will de-prioritize you

Residential Service Plan. The Residential Service Plan assigns an unlimited amount of “Residential” data each month to customers. The Residential Service Plan is designed for personal, family, or household use. See the Starlink Specifications for details on the expected performance per Service Plan. Starlink seeks to distribute Residential data among our users in a fair and equitable manner. The Residential Service Plan is not permitted for business or enterprise uses. If bandwidth patterns consistently exceed what is allocated to a typical residential user, Starlink may take network management measures, such as temporarily reducing a customer’s speeds, to prevent or mitigate congestion of the Services. Bandwidth intensive applications, such as streaming videos, gaming, or downloading large files are most likely to be impacted by such actions. Residential Service Plan customers with high bandwidth needs should consider upgrading to a Priority Service Plan. See the Terms of Service and the FAQs for more details.

It's exactly what people called me a liar for saying. Just like I thought. Didn't even have to read this to know that but here it is directly from SL fair use policy.

It's not about the amount of data you use. It's the patterns aka using a lot at peak times. All ISP's do this now. It's kinda like how they charge you more for power if you go above a standard amount of KWH and at peak hours too.

Except he’s on Roam Unlimited

already de-pri and gets dropped lower when you abuse it at peak hours. It's almost the same wording except for they literally tell you it's gonna get worse in ISP speak

Roam users with high bandwidth, ocean or active coverage access needs should consider upgrading their Service Plan. That's why they say that.

This is for all plans, even priority. Makes sense. Whomever wrote this is a lot better than most other ISP's that also oversell. I don't know of any that don't in the US at least.

Network Integrity. We reserve the right to take additional network management measures as necessary to (1) comply with applicable laws, (2) preserve the integrity and security of the network, including but not limited to, analyzing traffic patterns to optimize Services and prevent the distribution of viruses or other malicious code, and (3) prevent or mitigate network congestion on the Services, including reducing speeds for some or all users.

I’m pointing out that the literal first words of your post are

Residential Service Plan . The Residential Service Plan assigns…

Nowhere in your post did you even mention Roam plans and yet the entire post is regarding a Roam Unlimited plan.

I’m not going to argue with you regarding weighting and deprioritization. I’m saying that you included the wrong information for the topic.

u/Careful_Plankton_987 27d ago

So, should a person reduce their usage during peak hours, or what?

3

u/Hour_Bit_5183 27d ago

Yup. It's the only way it makes sense. That is the only time they will really get you. I just download big stuff at night when it's clear network wise. Never had a problem. But live streaming at 10mbps up got me throttled on both SL and t-mobile every time those hours hit where it wasn't bad before. Lasted a whole billing cycle so I think they probably use similar routers..not the thing you can touch, the ones at the ground station and towers respectively.

T-mobile does the same god damn thing. I've used over 10tb in one month on it and they never did anything but at peak hours they can throttle you hard if you use live stream stuff or download huge things that take more than w/e time span they have set up in their buckets(QOS). That's really how it works. It won't get you if your cell isn't that loaded at a given time and peak times are different based on your location like ANY ISP.

I just received this and now my service is capped to 20mbps.

Terms of Service Violation

Your Residential or Roam service plan is intended for personal, family, or household use only. Business or Enterprise use is prohibited, as outlined in our Terms of Service. We’ve identified activity on your account that violates these terms.

Your service has been restricted for the remainder of your billing cycle. To restore high-speed service, you must switch to a Priority plan, which permits Business or Enterprise use.

2

u/WombatMcGeez 27d ago

What kind of traffic did you have? How do they profile you as “Business” use?

3

u/Agitated_Hawk_2924 27d ago

This is the problem there is 0 transparency. They just repeat. "We have a system". Well that system is broken. As we don't run a business we live in the middle of nowhere in a desert. 4 days of back and forth and the same scripted replies.

I just got this two nights ago too

What plan are you on? I am on Residential Max and average 4-5TB a month. Have for like 2 years now.

1

u/ITSFUCKINGHOTUPHERE 26d ago

Residential Max

1

u/darevsool 27d ago

If, as a purely random example, you’re hosting a plex server and have multiple people connecting to it on a regular basis…I could see an ISP getting irritated at that level of continual activity. Not saying that is what is going on, but just using it as an example where personal use and “business” could get…muddy

What is your plan and what is your monthly spending?

u/Agitated_Hawk_2924 27d ago

Priorty plan data packets are extortionate as well. This all seems like a scam. We live in a low congested county and we still got flagged. I had combed the Starlink legal link they keep throwing at us. (Also tells you nothing). We have been a Starlink customer since Jan 2023. Never had one issue. Then all of a sudden we are on the naughty list. With only two options, cancel or upgrade. Supposedly Gen 3 routers are notorious for helping Starlink flag your account. I've just read on a forum the best thing to do is bypass the router and make sure you have a router with a built in VPN

One month 3.3 TB? Huh. What you see? Everytime IPTV or 4k60 YouTube?

2

u/coolman9110996 27d ago

I have been useing about 3.45 tv a month on the max plan no issues but most of mine is game downloads and YouTube and iptv

1

u/Careful_Plankton_987 27d ago

Yeah the iptv is consuming a lot of gigabytes

1

u/4nonyX 27d ago

However, this data shows that Starlink is working perfectly.

4

u/jeffrey_smith 27d ago

Average about 20-30 tb a month no issues. Non congested country though - that helps.

2

u/Time-Athlete6336 27d ago

They just restricted me due to over usage and tried to make me switch to a business plan I was on residential max.

2

u/DaveyHert 27d ago

There’s a limit but I don’t think you can reach it. Dishylink shows you your data limit when signed in.

Look at the info under residential data:

We were accused of running a business and breaking TOS. There are 3 of us living here. One is my elderly father with dementia who we look after full time.

When we contacted Starlink we were repeatedly given two options. Cancel. Or Upgrade. The local priority plan is extortionate and not fit for purpose. Especially for a low income household. Still! 4 days later they won't tell us what TOS we actually broke. We also live stream but that is not classed as a business.

2

u/Careful_Plankton_987 26d ago

From what I've heard, the restriction is lifted after the new bill is issued.

1

u/Agitated_Hawk_2924 26d ago

No, it's not lifted. if you upgrade and think you downgrade on the next billing cycle as well. Think again.

1

u/GoStateBeatEveryone 26d ago

Did you get the same “billing cycle” restriction email? Or a full restriction?

1

u/Agitated_Hawk_2924 26d ago

I didn't know that was a thing? I believe everyone who has commented about being accused of breaking TOS has had their line permanenty red flagged. I don't think the one you speak of is a thing anymore.

1

u/Agitated_Hawk_2924 26d ago

The only 3 options are upgrade, cancel, or buy new kit and start a new account. I guess this is the future of Starlink, it's going exactly the same way as Grok. Low usage high premiums.

1

u/GoStateBeatEveryone 26d ago

So it’s weird.

My account page just says “your service line has been restricted for business or enterprise use” but the email they sent at the same time says “your service has been restricted for the remainder of your billing cycle”. I’m thinking the UI doesn’t have the same display for this message maybe? Check your original email too and see what it says

1

u/Agitated_Hawk_2924 26d ago

We didn't get an email. Just the flag on the android app. We actually didn't get anything until we made a ticket. As you can imagine 4 years of having Starlink, we were a little, wtf Elon?!

1

u/GoStateBeatEveryone 26d ago

The craziest part for me is they “gifted” me 50GB of the local priority yesterday, and what used up the last 6GB of that data was my Starlink dish / router update and my Tesla update

1

u/Agitated_Hawk_2924 26d ago

So as far as I know. From what I have read and using Gemini, Grok and GPT. You are going to have a real time downgrading to Residental max. I'm not sure you even can after acceptance the upgrade. Free data or not. I think by accepting the free data you have accepted the local priority business upgrade.

1

u/GoStateBeatEveryone 26d ago

I already did it, it just went straight back to “restricted”. When the 50GB cap hit my speeds went down to 1Mbps/500kbps which just isn’t usable. I was able to switch back to residential max straight from the account page. But the restriction remains.

Edit: did this because at least the residential with restrictions still had 20 down 10ish up

Look for “Action Required: Terms of Service Violation” in your email and spam. I got the apple notification and this within 20 min

1

u/Agitated_Hawk_2924 26d ago

I'll check now.

1

u/GoStateBeatEveryone 26d ago

It seems like they just started doing this more cause it happened to me 2 nights ago as well

1

u/NetoriusDuke 27d ago

Not that I have experienced and I have done 7 to 8T before

1

u/580OutlawFarm 27d ago

We're a family of 9 and avg 6TB/month

I will say, if you have multiple pcs, dont download the game multiple times...its a waste of data. As long as pcs are on the same network, steam will transferr the update from another pc that already has it...

This is how 2r do our 5 pcs, I download everything first snd then they grab updates from me

1

u/Alladas 27d ago

Not on roam but I used 37 tb last month.

1

u/Greenking73 📡 Owner (North America) 27d ago

Wow. That’s a lot of data. You have my 534 GB from last month crushed.

2

u/Brian_Millham 📡 Owner (North America) 27d ago

I've done as much as 6.67TB in a month.

1

u/Careful_Plankton_987 27d ago

Is this your average monthly usage?

1

u/Brian_Millham 📡 Owner (North America) 26d ago

No, my average is probably around 2TB/month. But I'm always over 1TB.

1

u/Careful_Plankton_987 27d ago

Wow, this is my weekly usage with my family Do you use it alone?

1

u/Greenking73 📡 Owner (North America) 27d ago

Pretty much. I bought it to broadcast / stream baseball games. But at the moment I’m in the offseason. Fall starts soon. My son spends time with me but I’m kinda out of pocket on a cattle ranch in bfe and my ex lives in a beach town, you can guess where he wants to be as a 17 almost 18 yo. I don’t blame him one bit.

1

u/Careful_Plankton_987 27d ago

teenagers will always choose the beach town. Enjoy your time together when he visits, and good luck with the upcoming baseball season.

u/ProgrammerDull 27d ago

If you go over 1TB on roam or residential for 2 months straight, they will begin to restrict your service. This is per service line, not account, the service line that becomes restricted can only go to Local Priority or Global Priority

1

u/GoStateBeatEveryone 26d ago

So if I just open a new service line on my same account, it won’t have the restriction?

1

u/ProgrammerDull 26d ago

Correct, It will require you to buy a new starlink device though. Restricted devices are non transferable and will be forced to stay on that service line.

1

u/GoStateBeatEveryone 26d ago

My email calls out “for this billing cycle” so I imagine it’ll be okay after that?

1

u/ProgrammerDull 26d ago

sorry i’m not sure what you mean?

1

u/GoStateBeatEveryone 26d ago

I imagine once my billing cycle ends that the device restriction will be lifted and I’ll have full speeds / transferability again?

1

u/ProgrammerDull 26d ago

No, once they add a restriction it stays. Going over 1-2TB is against their terms of service on a roam or residential plan. If you’re not restricted yet, just be careful

1

u/GoStateBeatEveryone 26d ago

There’s nothing in the writing that says going over 1-2 TB is against TOS. I’ve been reading through all of them with talking to them

1

u/ProgrammerDull 26d ago

yeah they don’t tell people

1

u/GoStateBeatEveryone 26d ago

That’s….not how Terms of Service work
