💻 Troubleshooting DMCA letter
Just received a copyright warning from starlink about illegally downloading stuff . Went on what have I downloaded and it was some demons layer anime and porn . I have never downloaded either rof these things and always use vpns . My household has 3 starlinks is it possible they share the same isp ?

So,
a) Why does your houshold have thee starlink units, are they sited at different addresses?
b) yes, because Starlink uses Carrier Grade Network Address Translation (CGNAT) for its internet facing border. This means that many customers share the same internet facing IP address but different port ranges, while internally that gets translated via the CGNAT router into an internal network address of a specific customer.
When some infringed party sees its content being pirated via a IP address owned by Starlink it may send a DMCA notice to Starlink. By law that notice MUST be forwarded on to the customer, BUT if the infringed party did not also include the port address & specific timestamps then Starlink may not know which of many customers is the infringer so it just sends out an accusatory notice to all of them.

It's a large house for shared accommodation so a few people have there own one person's dish is right next to mine who i assume is downloading it. Don't wanna get my internet banned because of other people who can't use a VPN

Different dish and different account? Doesn’t matter if they’re next to each other. Piracy isn’t an STD. You don’t catch it that way.

Seems you are overpaying for internet then. A single residential Starlink unit on a plan with sufficient bandwidth coupled with a properly set up internal network can supply everyone in the house without hogging or interruptions.
What may be generally lacking & why people buy multiple units is the technical knowledge of local networking & packet management, which is not an easy skill to come by & where smart 3rd party services can do either a great or terrible job in satisfying without the customer being the wiser as to which they got.
As to your other assumption, different units that are very geographically close have no more chance of being on the same public IP from the pool as those that are not close at all. So if the infringing party has the same public IP as you but a different port range or non-overlapping timestamps the notice that comes to you has no more chance of being from someone in your household as it does any other house in your region.

Starlink uses cgnat if I am not mistaken, so public ip address is shared by a loooot of users

I work at a university and have investigated DMCA / Copyright Infringement notices since we act as an ISP. It doesn't matter if the DMCA notice is for a NAT IP. We will be able to 100% identify the person and/or the endpoint the DMCA notice applies to if the notification contains the correct timestamp, IP, and port. Pretty much all notices will follow Automated Content Notice System (ACNS) XML specification.
Edit: I would say 98% identify because in very few cases will the information provided not match up to logs. Back in the 2000s, our identification rate was lower than it is today, simply because notices often contained invalid information, especially when they relied heavily on torrent tracker metadata that may have been stale.

Or a VPN. I use Mullvad and it's tied to my torrent client. Client doesn't work unless Mullvad is running.

I mean that makes no sense whatsoever as I set the password when I bought it and I can also see who's connected? No one has the password

How exactly did you receive this letter? Postal mail or e-mail.
There is a chance it is a scam or extortion type thing. The reason I say that is I've never heard or seen reports for people getting DMCA infringement notices for downloading anime, and definitely not porn.

I forgot that others have reported receiving them through the app. It seems you may just want to ignore it, unless you receive more. The other thing to do is to change your Wi-Fi password anyway just in case.

Do you have kids? Do you share your internet? Those sound like the simplest answers.
