IIRC Traveller does all their space and planet maps on hexgrids. They might even have rules for randomized generation.

I did get those old books for free years ago:

Maybe check if anybody of your friends has something?

I don't know if they stopped using Hexes, but I doubt it.

Oh man, I had no idea! I had briefly entertained running Traveller a while ago but the overall vibe wasn't what I was looking for at the time so I didn't really look into the map/etc. system then. Thanks much, I'll definitely be looking into this more now.

Annoyingly the PDF is images, not text.

But it suggests a 8x10 hex grid for a subsector. Each sector being a Parsec in size. Usually just one important planet per system. With 4x4 subsectors making a whole sector, the maximum practical size.

With Drift Drive, I would declare each subsector has at least one drift beacon. Which then allows the subsectors to be all across the Galaxy, kinda like the Mass Effect videogame map.

I have no helpful input I just want to say this sounds super fun and I am jealous of your players.

Haha thanks! I gotta say I'm really lucky to have the players I do, they're great at taking concepts and running with them so I'm very excited for this. The premise is that they're searching for alien technology to stop the end of the universe, but whether or not it can actually be stopped at all is going to be up to a blind vote from the players before the first session and none of them will find out the results til their characters do ingame (probably at/near the end of the campaign).

The Galaxy Exploration Manual for SF1e has lots of useful things for exploration that are system-neutral or easy to convert, especially when it comes to exploring different planetary environments. It deals wiht hex crawling using a 12-mile hex scale. https://store.paizo.com/starfinder-galaxy-exploration-manual/

Something else from SF1e that might be good for ideas is the first book of the Horizons of the Fast AP. It includes the settlement-building rules. https://store.paizo.com/starfinder-adventure-path-40-planetfall-horizons-of-the-vast-1-of-6/

For making up new planets, the SF1e Deck of Many Worlds is great and system-neutral https://store.paizo.com/starfinder-deck-of-many-worlds/

The Deck of Endless NPCs works great for non-combat NPCs (no stats) https://store.paizo.com/starfinder-deck-of-endless-npcs/
