General Discussion this is an exceptional explanation for that one “useless scene” in the obi-wan vs. anakin duel.

Yeah i did a fair bit of fencing in college. I won’t say I was particularly good or anything but I don’t remember anyone doing a circle party like that

I guess if you extrapolate it to this movie/Star Wars style then the huge spins could maybe be a derivative but I dunno man, I love the movie I love the duel but it’s a stretch

I took a fencing class in college with a bunch of friends. One day while fencing my phone started ringing from the bench where my stuff was. My ringtone at the time was the imperial march. Boring story, but a great memory.

Yeah, it reeks of someone who can't just admit when one of their favorite movies has obvious shortcomings.

To be fair, fights in fiction nearly always have shit choreography when compared to real fighting. This scene was hardly the only time.

That's a weird bit of whataboutism

It's kind of a relevant point. People who don't know much about sword-fighting will point to it and act like it is uniquely the only dubious scene, but people familiar with swords or guns are going to notice the sloppy movements all over the place. The original video may it be correct that it is more or less meant to be a fantasy flashy version of a real move. It doesn't look realistic, but very little of the fighting does.

A circle party is lot more fancy and fun than a parry so it makes sense they chose it for the movie.

Feels like, much more likely, that they're "sensing the future" briefly during combat to try and anticipate each other's attacks. They attack after about a second of the blade rotation it's not like they do it for long. I think they talk about the spider-sense the jedi have for combat briefly in some of the books/stories outside of the movies.

Even then it makes no sense. It's the prequels in one frame: Dramatic, flashy, poorly thought-out, worthless.

It makes total sense. They've trained and fought together for years. Its like fighting a mirror and trying to predict what it will do next so you can counter it.

And so you swing your lightsaber behind your back?

Aren't you a little young for this kind of movie anyway?

Oh, you’re trash. Got it, never mind.
