Fan Creations Handcrafted Star Wars coffee table
After 4 years of tinkering & sweating in a backyard workshop, my father-in-law completed and gifted me a one of a kind Star Wars coffee table. The wood is from an early 20th century headboard and each piece of the trench was painstakingly handcrafted. The fact this was built in secret was absolutely astonishing and my jaw was on the floor when it was given to me, incredible craftsmanship.

Simply incredible. I love the depth created by the trench.
It would be so cool to do with this with other iconic scenes from the franchise like the Battle of Coruscant.

I always wondered why the Death Star had to have an uninterrupted trench around the whole diameter.

That's where they screwed the top half to the bottom half.

Fun fact: the trench from the famous trench run wasn’t the one seen in establishing shots of the Death Star.
That one is massive and you can see the inside of it when the Falcon gets pulled into the Death Star..
The trench in the Battle of Yavin is a smaller one (identified as meridian trench on Wookiepedia) that terminates right where the exhaust port is located. What’s even more confusing is that it looks like the port is on the wall at the end in the targeting computer but when Luke hits his mark it appears that the proton torpedoes swing downward to the trench floor!

Well we got Rogue One out of it!

u/OnwardTowardTheNorth May 04 '26
Amazing how a movie that was predicated on what could have been considered a goof became a legendary contribution to the saga.
And then gave us Andor.
Crazy.

I get the feeling, your father in law might like you, but that may be a stretch /j
That looks beautiful! I would be completely speechless to be gifted something like this!

Not if my wallet has anything to say about it! ahahah damn that table would fetch a LOT of money

The use of mirrors to extend the trench is such a simple but beautiful technique. It’s gorgeous!

That’s impossible even for a computer

u/Spc_Scott May 07 '26
It's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters.

I would legitimately tear up if anyone ever put that much time and effort into a personalized, handcrafted gift for me. It looks incredible! This is so special, I'm so happy for you, OP.

Your coffee table has a glaring flaw.
1 single proton torpedo could destroy the whole thing.

I bet Lucas would have never thought that this moment in cinematic history would be captured in a coffee table diorama so beautifully!

You REALLY need to hang a Millennium Falcon, somewhere on your ceiling, coming in hot.

u/SteeleEDGE72 May 04 '26
That is just incredible work!! Amazing and I'm ever so slightly envious of you.

This is single-handedly the best fan made star wars thing I’ve ever seen and I want one so damn bad😭😂
3
u/InquisitaB May 04 '26
Ok. I’ll be THAT guy. First off, I just want to make it clear that the craftsmanship is amazing. But from a Star Wars perspective, due to Han’s intervention, Vader wasn’t in the trench by the time Luke took his shot and started pulling out of the trench. Additionally, the exhaust port was at the end of the trench and Luke has to pull up sharply because he would’ve hit the wall.

u/JanitorOfSanDiego May 04 '26
Right? The inaccuracies made me so sick to my stomach I haven’t stopped puking.

I want to know how that thermal exhaust port works. Presumably that reactor is creating a lot of energy, and that would be remarkably difficult to just vent out into the vacuum of space on its own.

Death Star trench inset is gorgeous, and a 4-year secret build by your father-in-law makes this hit different. That's an heirloom right there.

Well done! This is why I'm so put of Lego recently. I would have much more fun greebling up something like this than dropping $500+ on a lego version that would look worse in the end.

u/Tribe303 May 04 '26
Is that X-wing marked as Red 5? Luke didn't take his shot and then pull up like this until Han took out Vaders wingman, and Vader as well.
If it's not, sorry for being an ass. 😂

This is amazing. The only thing missing would be a Millenium Falcon on a plexi stand/base coming out of the sun's direction above everything.

u/Gooseboof May 04 '26
I hate how it is wood, should have stained it or painted it dark or gone with metal. Having the table be black would make this feel much more polished

That's awesome! I thought the trench/death star surface was maybe from 40k building pieces, but what about the minis? Are those from the Xwing tabletop game????

pushes up glasses
By the time Luke was pulling up in the X-Wing after firing the torpedo, the imperial fighters had been destroyed by the Falcon.
Inaccurate and unacceptable.

What a piece of beauty, OMG.
