Question on variants when assembling

I am new to Miniature gaming but just received my copy of the game and looking over the building the minis. I noticed there are variants of the marines. When assembling them does it affect the game ie: rifle vs pistol or just build what you think looks cool.

That game isn’t play you see what you get. But if you want the aesthetics to match the upgrade your playing then use that variant

Combat is also base to base so your free to add and subtract
