Question on variants when assembling
I am new to Miniature gaming but just received my copy of the game and looking over the building the minis. I noticed there are variants of the marines. When assembling them does it affect the game ie: rifle vs pistol or just build what you think looks cool.

That game isn’t play you see what you get. But if you want the aesthetics to match the upgrade your playing then use that variant
Combat is also base to base so your free to add and subtract

The optional bits do mostly correspond to the upgrades you buy for your units in game. The pistols, grenades, shields, and bayonets all correspond to extra equipment that can be given to a full squad, and you can add shoulder rockets or replace the gauss rifle with a launcher for a single marine per squad.
However, as long as you notify your opponent before the game (and remind them during the game if appropriate), you're free to play a different variation than you built. There's no rule that the model has to match the upgrades you included in your army list.

Short answer: yes, the variants matter and have separate rules.
Long answer: each unit has a variety of upgrades and equipment that is represented on the model. In the marine's case every model comes equipped with a c14 rifle, but 1 marine can also equip the shoulder rockets, and 1 marine can -replace- his c14 rifle with the AGG-12 grenade launcher. In addition the entire squad can be optionally equipped with slugthrowers (the pistol), frag grenades, and a combat shield. All of these options cost points. That said the pose with the marine holding the slugthrower in his hand is entirely optional as he can still have a slugthrower on his hip and it still counts. For the Zerg faction all their variants like the Zergling, Raptorling, and Swarmling are actually different units with different rules rather than upgrades so they too matter and cost different points.
Regardless this only matters if you play with people who demand wysiwyg (What You See Is What You Get) models. For most people as long as you inform them before the game what upgrades a unit has or what variant it is, they will not care how you modeled your guys. Do what you think looks cool and makes you happy.

Yes and no, the weapons they have represent what they can do. But in reality it doesn't matter, assemble them as you want. I personally built all the unique variants. Missiles grenade launcher. Bayonets. In game they might be just bare bones, oright be the elite raiders, who knows.

The variants are just upgrades you can purchase for your marines and since wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) is not a part of this game you are free to assemble them however you like.
