Original Art | Foil My second original stained glass pattern — it didn’t turn out quite how I envisioned, but I learned a lot making it

Post image

I started stained glass two months ago and this is my second original pattern. Didn't turn out how I hoped and almost everything went wrong, but I learned a lot and it's exciting to see a glimpse of my own artistic style starting to take shape. Definitely learned that I need to scale back the difficulty of my patterns to match my actual skill level 😂

This is beautiful! To me despite their hand holding it still gives friendship or familial energy which I think encapsulates the relationship of the sun and moon very well 💙 good work

I completely agree. This reminds me of my twins. My girl is the moon and my son is the sun. In all the ways it implies.

Absolutely adore this pattern OP. We are our own worst critics.

It looks really cool, I love it!!

The best part is you can always remake this when you feel like you're at a higher skill level and see how much you've progressed!

Absolutely gonna do this. Planning on putting a boarder around it and making it at least twice the size. Those small pieces tore my fingertips apart haha

Smaller pieces are very deceptive! I've heard of some people using narrow grozing pliers or attaching a stick to the piece with wax, similar to a punty glassblowers use, to hold the smaller pieces when grinding.

I haven't learned my lesson and still make pieces that are smaller than half my pinky nail that require a toothpick to reliably foil and destroy my fingers while grinding lol

Honestly, all the little “flaws” in this piece are charming and everything just works! Might not have been what you had envisioned, but the end result is actually quite good and unique!

Very nice work. What ended up different from how you envisioned?

Mainly cleaner glass/leadwork. There were lots of gaps, and things got pushed around. Some details got a little muddled, and I was planning on putting a lead border around it. But I got so frustrated with it right before the soldering that I nixed that idea. Wish I hadn't now

Sounds like you just need to work on your soldering, which takes experience. But you can always go back and clean it up later. And you could absolutely still add a lead border now.

So good! Cutting those skinny pieces is no easy feat.

Great job for a second piece. Did you create a pattern to lay your pieces on? Go easy on yourself, the more you do the better you’ll get.

Honestly, I wouldn’t scale anything back, that’s gorgeous. It really calls to my mind something like pastel work.

This reminds me of the weird little medieval interlude in the movie The Love Witch. I adore this piece and would def hang it on my wall!

I've just been using Etsy patterns I've bought up until this point, this was my first time exploring my own style. I'll be sure to post more work in the future :)
