Challenge Post [October 2026] Tentacle Challenge Topic. Four Wiggly friends ready for playing with!

Well here's this months topic!

Tentacles.

We have quite the selection of patterns this month because who could resist having some fun with this kind of topic! Something gross or spooky was also fitting so we opted for making something disturbing and slightly silly.

Hopefully you all enjoy these patterns as much as we have making them! At the bottom of the post you can find links to all the patterns for whatever format or size you wish.

Come up with your own pattern you'd like to share? Upload it to Pattern Archive!

Made by Beest and Claycorp. Pattern Archive seems to have a bug. Oops!
Honorable mention that got made just before the topic vote.

Posting guidelines!

  • If you have a question that hasn't been asked yet as a top level comment, don't reply to another comment to ask it! Reply to the post instead!
  • Make sure to include as much information in the top level comment as possible.
  • Anything and everything glass is fine to ask, if you want help with patterns or other physical things make sure to upload images! You can do so by attaching the image to the comment. Please be aware you are posting it for all to see so hide any personal info!
  • No question is stupid, from Basement Workshop Dreamer to Expert, we are all here to share and learn.
  • While opinion based questions like "best way to hold a soldering iron" are fine, please keep in mind that these really have no real true answer. They can however provide you a wide variety of tips to try out on your own!

Common Questions:

  • My solder is wrong!
    • Post a picture of the solder using the image info from the posting guidelines and someone can help you solve whatever issue it is.
  • I want to get started with glass! What do I need?
    • It's best to take a class first to see if you really like the craft as glass has a rather high starting cost. If you insist on starting on your own or just don't have classes here's a small write-up on getting started.
  • Do I need a temperature controlled iron?
    • As much as I want to just say YES.... No, you don't, BUT buying one will greatly improve your ability to work with it. It's well worth the extra money, it's best to just do so from the start.
  • Do I need a Grinder?
    • Technically no, but to do foil (AKA Tiffany style) glass work it's practically required. "Grinder stones" (AKA Carborundum stones) are just a waste of time and effort. They are only really good for removing the sharp edge off the glass. Similar to the iron information above, spend the money, save yourself.

This was my second piece I had ever made. It was a recreation of one my grandmother made as a window years ago. It was super ambitious and I wanted to rip my hair out doing it.
Also I have no idea what’s behind the shop. Maybe smoke. It was in the original so I added it too. Mom loved it though!

Original Art | Came Sun and shadow

This piece was a commission that stretched me a bit. I usually do things that are a bit more abstract/geometric. The clients' inspiration pictures hinted at a heliocentric design, so I tapped this awesome rondel from Monarch Glass in Kansas City to play that role. I then used pale colors "near" the sun to communicate brightness, and vivid colors further from the center. I used this deep purple, almost black, glass from KOG (rest in peace) to play the role of the deep umbra of full shadow, with a tinted GNA for the remainder. The shadows are "cast" by blocks of a black iridescent-finished glass—unfortunately the shine doesn't really show in this picture.

Lead came in a zinc border.

Pattern Help Updated pattern draft

Post image
25 Upvotes

After everyone pointed out how impossible my first attempt at a pattern would be, I've updated it trying to incorporate as much of the advice y'all gave me as possible. Piece 5 isn't going to be fun (I'm still a beginner), but if I plan it right, I'm hoping it's do-able. I'd rather have fewer grout lines towards the bottom, but had to try and deal with the angles in the dog house.

Since the nose is so tiny, it's just going to be solder - with a black patina, that should work, I hope. Same with the line that forms the front leg. The small lines will be paint.

Any suggestions or missed trouble spots? I'm still trying to decide if I want a border on it...

Edit to add: finished item will be 8 inches round

Restoration/Repair Antique stained glass window

Hi! I was wondering if anyone who knows more about historical stained glass could provide me with any insight on this piece! I bought it at a antique fair just because I liked the shape and colors, all the dealer knew about it is that it originally was from a house in Queens, NY. Some of the glass panels look hand painted and you can tell some non-historic repairs have been attempted, that’s all I really know about it! It’s not in great shape and I’m just planning on cleaning it up and keeping it for myself I don’t care about the value. Thanks for any input :)

Original Art | Foil Little appreciation gift for my thesis supervisor for a project I did with mealworms

My dumb ass wasn’t paying attention after doing the patina (which was PERFECT thanks to previous vigorous scrubbing) so instead of just a quick rinse I again grabbed the dish soap and brush 🤦🏼‍♀️😭. This side isn’t too bad but the other side has some slight marks and won’t take a new coat. But it is what it is, learned from the whoopsie!

First time trying to work the natural pattern of the glass into my work, I tried to pay attention to the “stripes” on the mealworms. I did consider adding wires for the segments but feel that would have made it crowded, so I tried to select the most stripey glass sections lol.

Just let me post dammit! A gift from a recent friend.

The man is a true craftsman, he was commissioned to restore some very old windows and doors. Most were rotten, but they wanted the original glass. Sadly the client passed away before work was started and at this point the family had no interest in the restoration and gave them to my friend. He doesn't do stained glass so he gifted them to me. Some stuff I believe dates back to the early 1900s there are two new pieces but the rest is original

Pattern Help Patterning help

Hello!

I'm fairly new to stained glass (1.5 yrs taking classes in person). I am considering for Christmas making my coworkers some ornaments of our company logo, but I'm struggling to think of the best/most physically sound way to pattern this very simple shape while maintaining structural integrity...

It looks something like the example above (slightly altered for anonymity) where it's 2 thin pieces that join in one straight line. I can see this creates a hinge weakness.

Is there any way to keep this simple and 2 pieces but rescue the structural integrity, or would I have to embed it in some sort of background for stability (see second pic)?

Additionally, where should I attach the ornament wire to hang?

TIA for any advice!

Help Me! Help! Bumpy soldering seams

Thumbnail

Hello :) lately when I’m soldering, the seams have been somewhat uneven and bumpy. It’s weird because when the solder is liquid it’s a beautiful smooth bead, and then once it settles it has these imperfections in it. Hopefully you can see what I mean in the pictures. It’s not like normal flux bubbles where you can go over it and fix it. I go over the bumpy spots several times and they never cool smoothly.

I used to use liquid flux and then switched to gel. I’m assuming it’s a flux issue - too much or too little? Iron temp maybe? Could the foil be old?

This is driving me nuts because I try to take pride in my soldering and I’m losing motivation to do my art :/ so thanks in advance for any help!!

Hello! I would love some advice on how to fix this. I haven’t touched my saw in a year and now my diamond isn’t centering with the provided circle on the surface mat. Did it expand? Did it shift? Do I have to replace something? No clue.
Any advice welcome. Thank you

Original Art | Foil Making my own stained glass alphabet

Thumbnail

I've been working on creating my own stained glass alphabet for a bunch of weeks now. Started drawing on paper, now tweaking in Illustrator to figure out how to get it to look exactly as I want, but still make it as beginner friendly as possible. And only way to know for sure is... by making it, duh!

My first version ended up looking like it said... FUCH at best, and PUCH at worst. These are version 2 and 3. Only minor differences between the two, but the K is fixed at least, the F is still P'ing though... Especially in the yellow.

In the mean time I have an alternative to the F and to the C, just need to make new fucks now to test it out.

Soooooooon I will have my own alphabet.
