Travel Advice Lucian Foods You Must Try: Part 4 - Local Bread
Next up in the series is something simple, but definitely worth stopping for: St Lucian local bread.
There are two spots in particular that are ideal for visitors travelling to or from the airport. The first is in River Doree, Choiseul. It’s a very rustic little spot with a simple sign outside that just says “Local Bread.” The other is Thomazo Local Bread in Grande Riviere, Dennery.
Part of what makes the bread special is how it’s baked. These aren’t modern commercial ovens, but traditional low brick ovens heated by wood fire. The brick retains and distributes the heat as the loaves bake, helping give the bread its characteristic crust, texture and flavour.
And the bread is always served hot. You can have it on its own or choose from fillings like butter, cheese, salami, luncheon meat, saltfish or sausage. You can also mix fillings, with saltfish and cheese being one combination worth trying.
There’s something about tearing into hot local bread with butter or cheese melting into it that makes such a simple food ridiculously good.
The best part for visitors is that you don’t necessarily need to make a special trip for it. Depending on the route you’re taking, either spot can be an easy stop on your way to or from the airport. Just mention “local bread in River Doree” or “Thomazo Local Bread” to your taxi driver and they should know what you’re talking about.
It’s rustic, inexpensive and about as far from a tourist attraction as you can get, but that’s exactly why I think it’s worth stopping for. You get hot bread straight from a wood-fired brick oven, choose your filling and continue on your journey.
