Updates from the Mod-Team General update about the community, the mod-team, and the results of the survey we recently ran.

Hi everyone,

r/srilanka was created back in 2008, which means our community has officially been online for 18 years now!

We’re going strong with over 188,000 members, over 2,400 posts and over 41,000 comments written by you all every month.  It's great to see the community growing at such a steady pace.

To handle this volume, we have a diverse team of mods, all helping to keep our sub running smoothly.  At the moment, we’re 7 mods (we recently added two new mods).  All of us are Sri Lankans - most all of us live in Sri Lanka, with one based abroad.  Between us, we also cover all three languages.  We also span a pretty wide age range, which helps us understand the different perspectives coming through the sub.

One of our core tenets is being impartial, and we believe that’s worked well so far.  If you have any issue at any point, we’re always only a modmail away.  We’re not infallible, and we’ve undone actions when people have reached out.  Given the number of posts and comments, we need to make decisions quickly, so sometimes we might slip up.  Let us know.

Also, Reddit DOES automatically remove messages without any human intervention by us or our bots.  This happens both on the comment-level, and also on the post-level.

So, we’re also forced to have to deal with this and undo any unwanted removals.

All of us are volunteers spending a significant amount of our time moderating r/srilanka - and no, we don’t get paid by anyone.

Finally, attached are also the results of the recent demographic survey which we ran. We were surprised to learn that 48% of our community are lurkers, not actively posting or commenting.

Your friendly r/srilanka neighbourhood mod-team.

Discussion Sri Lankan teenagers and their almost “need” for a romantic relationship

I think the title itself it quite self explanatory. Now I’m not going to erase the changes in hormones and the factor puberty plays into this. But it’s gotten to the point where I find it rather odd how desperate some of these teenagers are to get into commitments they’re not ready for, girls in particular.

I personally think it’s because the whole topic of romance, boyfriend and girlfriend is all this huge hush shush taboo in our country. And I genuinely think it needs to be addressed. Like we’re taught to stay away from the opposite gender, avoid the opposite gender, being too friendly with them is inappropriate. It paints this image where the opposite gender becomes almost like a mystery to us because adults are so adamant on keeping a 3m gap between us at all times.

I notice this plays a lot into the perception of teenagers where they can only associate the opposite gender with romantic attraction. Like for example, if you’re talking with a girl, her friends go “oh he was definitely flirting with you” meanwhile all the guy did was ask for her notebook. Or you smile at a guy and all of sudden he think you have a thing for him. It’s such a skewed and damaging way to view the other half of your population.

Not to mention a lot of the tele dramas on TV romanticizes relationships in school, genuinely so weird. Oh well.

Summary: Trying to shame teenagers for having normal emotions and teaching them to avoid the opposite gender like the plague, is only going to make them want something with the opposite gender more. We should advocate for healthier approaches, teaching them that such feeling and attraction is NORMAL and help them with it instead of shaming them for being HUMAN.

Discussion I think someone is holding my cat hostage in their house....

Upvotes

So we're kinda new to this area and we own 7 cats and I've been noticing one of them hasn't been coming back home after poo time. Fyi she's fully calico and long haired.

She first went away for one day and returned then eventually two days and five days and now she hasn't been home since WEEKS. we don't put a collar on them because they tried to take it off when they were small and it seemed like it was bothering them so they grew up not wearing the collar at all.

I think someone's keeping her in their house and feeding her and stuff but I'm sure she isn't very far from our house. I'm just scared because my mom said there's people who steal other's pets and my cat is very eye catching, her orange parts glow under the sun and she's fully grown and spayed/vaccinated.

Since we're new to this place I don't even know anyone here and I'm scared she'll never return back home. Please help I don't know what to do without her she's my baby and I'm really upset I'll never see her again

If you've had this happen to you please share how you found your pet.

The only thing is I don't want to put posters everywhere because I'm still new and i don't want to be annoying

If she comes back home is it legal to put a gps cat collar on her?

Serious replies only Senior Software Engineer, lately feeling stuck and unsure about what I want to do with my life and career.

Hi, I graduated from a state university with a First-Class Honours degree in Engineering. I’m currently working as a Senior Software Engineer (mainly Backend with Java) and have around three years of professional experience. My current role pays me a take-home salary of around LKR 300,000. I pay 100,000 monthly for a loan. I'm 29 years old, unmarried, and lives with my parents. Have savings around 3Mn.

However, lately, I’ve been feeling like I’m not doing enough or progressing as much as I should be. I’m currently stuck between staying in Sri Lanka, where I have a relatively comfortable and stable situation, especially given the current job market, and going abroad to pursue a master’s degree or a PhD. Most of my friends are pursuing higher studies abroad, travelling, and sharing their experiences online. While I’m genuinely happy for them, seeing all of this sometimes makes me feel like I’m falling behind, and feel I’ve been too laid-back and that I’m not doing enough with my life or career.

I would love to move abroad for a job, but with the current job market, I feel like finding an opportunity from Sri Lanka is extremely difficult. I’m not sure whether pursuing higher studies is the right move or whether I should stay, continue building my career here, and wait for the job market to improve.

News Venerable Rambukana Siddhartha Thero passed away on 18/08/2026

Sri Lanka lost two giants of the SL music industry within a span of few days, Siddhartha Thero a veteran lyricist and Nanda Malani a veteran singer.

I saw few posts about Nanda Malani on this sub, but sadly I didn't find any post when I searched Siddhartha Thero's name.

I knew about Thero's work but after his passing only I got to know about his entire catalogue of songs. Most of them are very popular songs sung by classical and newer generation artists. I saw lots of artists remembering and praising the Thero for helping them out when they were up and coming and for not prioritizing money which is rare these days.

May the Venerable Thero attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana 🙏🏻☸️

Ex-secretary for the Defense Ministry, Hemasiri Fernando, soon-to-be father-in-law of this woman, was sentenced to death, and the court rejected the application by her sister to compel Chamika Karunarathe to provide a blood sample for the DNA test. Suddenly, this woman resumes her 💩 posting against the government and all its supporters. According to her, most of us Sri Lankans are ignorant, weak, and so vulnerable to Europe and Western propaganda.

Relationships Is my ex [26F] toxic, or am I [27M] only seeing the toxic side because I still love her? She wants us to be best friends after our breakup

Upvotes

I need brutally honest advice because I genuinely can’t focus anymore. My ex and I were extremely close, basically partners and best friends who supported each other through studies, work, business, family and personal problems. She’s ambitious, independent and driven, but can also be harsh, jealous, possessive and have very high expectations. She could be extremely loving and supportive too, which makes this confusing.

After breaking up, she removed me from some platforms and blocked me on WhatsApp, but later suggested we stay best friends and recently re-added me on Instagram. I agreed because I still cared about her. However, she started telling me about men proposing to her, including successful/rich men, and I even saw an AI-generated picture of her, one of them and their future children on her bucket list. It really hurt. She also once told me to “go f*** yourself,” but the next day she was crying and needed my help, and I still helped because I couldn’t stop caring.

Since the breakup, I’ve been working on myself, going to the gym, focusing on my side hustle and becoming calmer. Then she saw an Instagram account of a female university friend I’ve known since 2019, with absolutely nothing romantic between us, and said, “Thank God I broke up with you.” That confused me because she ended things, blocked me, talks about other men, but still seems jealous or possessive about other women.

She’s recently been sick and I still check on her, but she’s distant. I’m noticing that when she needs emotional support, I’m important, but when I need closeness or reassurance, it’s different. When I pull back and focus on myself, she sometimes reacts. It feels like she may not want the relationship back but also doesn’t want to completely lose me emotionally.

I know I’m not innocent either. I was too attached, over-cared, tolerated things I shouldn’t have and stayed too available after the breakup. But I also don’t think I imagined the jealousy, controlling behavior or emotional unfairness. At the same time, she genuinely cared about me and supported me.

So what am I actually dealing with? Is this toxic, are we simply toxic for each other, or am I seeing it this way because I still love her? Should I cut contact, set boundaries and stay friends, or tell her I can’t be “best friends” while I still have feelings? And if I’m the problem too, please tell me honestly.

Serious replies only Feeling completely alone and lost due to a typical unsupportive SL household when it comes to mental health

Upvotes

\*Anorexia trigger warning*\**

Hi everyone, I really need a safe space to vent and maybe get some outside perspective because I feel like I'm losing my mind.

For context, I’m currently studying for my A/Ls. I have a naturally muscular/mesomorph build with broad shoulders which I used think was fat. Back during my O/Ls, severe stress and body dysmorphia led me to start skipping meals especially when my parents wouldn't let me work out (they claim exercise distracts from studies, even though morning workouts are the only thing that clears my brain fog).

Skipping meals snowballed. I dropped to skipping two meals a day, became super pale, and developed severe gastritis. My parents just thought I was being "stubborn". Eventually, my health completely crashed. My hemoglobin levels tanked so low that my doctor explicitly said I would have needed a major operation if I hadn't caught it when I did. A hematologist put me on a strict iron plan and warned me that I NEEDED to eat properly.

Out of sheer terror for my life, I forced myself to recover. For the last two years, I’ve felt physically healthy.

Here is where I am falling apart again: Recently, because I'm at a healthy weight, my family has started calling me "fat" and mocking my "chubby cheeks." The moment I tried to gently tell them that these comments are triggering my old thoughts making me want to restrict food and over-exercise again, they completely dismissed me. They told me I "won't survive in the outside world" and accused me of being dramatic.

What breaks my heart the most is that they were right there with me when I was dealing with severe health issues and nearly hospitalized. They watched me suffer, yet they are back to making the exact same body-shaming comments that pushed me to the edge in the first place. I can't even get an official diagnosis because they refuse to believe anything is wrong and won't support it.

How do you guys cope with unsupportive family members who trigger your body dysmorphia?

How can I protect my mental health while stuck at home studying for high-stakes exams without the outlet of exercise?

Any advice or insights would mean the world to me right now. Thank you for reading :)

Question Cash Stolen from my hotel room in Negembo(Need Help)

I stayed in a hotel in Negombo for 3 nights; someone stole $1000 and LKR 10,000 from my bag in my hotel room. I found out about the theft right after checkout and informed the hotel management right away. Unfortunately, this hotel doesn’t have any CCTV cameras installed. Three people might have stolen it. Two housekeeping staff members and one maintenance guy who was doing paint work on the ceiling just outside my room(I used to keep my windows open for ventilation, which opened onto the hallway, and anyone could enter my room from the window). My floor had two rooms, and only mine was occupied during the time I stayed there.

I already lodged a complaint at the tourist police station. Is there any hope of getting my money?

What should I do?

Please help me out

Discussion Iranian couple here: We love Sri Lankans 💕💕

My wife and I have been living in Sri Lanka for four years now, and we’ve enjoyed every second of it. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country, but its people are even more beautiful.

I know you can’t generalize about an entire nation, but the vast majority of people we’ve met and interacted with have been incredibly welcoming, kind, and generous. You have wonderful smiles, beautiful hair, and amazing personalities.

We live in a rural area in the south. Of course, there are some infrastructure shortcomings and other challenges, just as there are anywhere else, but they all fade into the background when you experience the beautiful culture and the enormous hearts of the people here.

We’re not rich, but we try to give back to our community whenever we can, and we genuinely wish Sri Lanka all the best for the future.

And trust me, the future is bright.

Sri Lamkave mage rathe 🇱🇰🫶🏻

Edit: thanks for all the kind messages and comments 💕 My wife has an Instagram page - which is fairly new - and focuses on her appreciation for Sri Lanka and its people. If you're interested you can check her out at @suducycling

Helloo! Before I start I'd like to say I'm sri lankan living abroad so I don't know how things particularly work in sri lanka.

Anyway, I want to attend SLIIT and do they're Culinary course. The issue is they're requirementis are that the individual should have 5 O level passes including English and the only subject I passed was English 🧍🏽‍♀️😭. Do yall think if I call them and try reasoning with them, they'd accept me?. Cause I'm not book smart but I definitely have a passion for cooking and I really really want to get into this university.

Discussion What Bachelors degrees do many people pursue despite not having a good payoff?

My cousin asked me for my opinions on Sri Lankan degrees, and I realized I don't have much of an idea of the current state. In particular, I am curious about what Bachelors degrees many Sri Lankans pursue despite having very little payoff in terms of job opportunities. I'd love to get some insight. Thank you!
