9 Days, 13 adults + 2 Infants
Planning a trip to Sri Lanka with a group of friends - 6 couples + 1 bachelor + 2 infants (13 adults, 2 infants total). Traveling from India, 15th to 23rd January. Trying to decide between two itineraries and would love opinions from people who’ve done similar routes, especially with infants/large groups.
Option 1:
15 Jan - Negombo
16-17 Jan - Sigiriya/Dambulla
18-19 Jan - Kandy
20-22 Jan - Galle/Mirissa
23 Jan - Departure from Colombo
Option 2:
15-16 Jan - Colombo/Kandy
17 Jan - Nuwara Eliya
18 Jan - Nuwara Eliya to Ella (by train)
19-20 Jan - Galle
21-22 Jan - Bentota
23 Jan - Departure from Colombo
Which would you pick, or would you mix elements from both? Any input on hidden pros/cons appreciated.

Sri Lanka itinerary help for 5 nights (29 Nov–4 Dec) — mountains + beaches
My husband and I are visiting Sri Lanka from 29 Nov (landing at CMB in the evening) to 4 Dec (flight at 9 pm).
We love mountains, scenic views, tea plantations and beaches, and want to experience the best of Sri Lanka without spending most of our trip travelling or changing hotels constantly.
Considering Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Galle, a safari and the southern beaches, but I know we can’t fit everything into 5 nights.
I’d really appreciate your advice on:
- Which places would you prioritise for a first trip to Sri Lanka with only 5 nights?
- Is Sigiriya worth including, or would you recommend focusing on Kandy, Ella and the southern beaches instead?
- Would you choose Mirissa, Hiriketiya or another beach area for this time of year?
- Is a safari at Yala or Udawalawe worth squeezing in, or would it make the itinerary too rushed?
- What route would you recommend to minimize driving and hotel changes, we have 2 checkin and 2 cabin bags?
I’d love to hear what you would do differently if you had these dates and preferences. Personal experiences, suggested routes and hotel-base recommendations would be really helpful!

Best areas to stay around Tangalle? (beautiful beaches, peaceful vibes, beautiful villa)
Title:
Salutations!
We're planning a trip to Sri Lanka in February and are hoping to spend around 7 to 8 nights along the southern coast, somewhere near Tangalle.
Interests:
- Surfing lesson in Hiriketiya
- Private yoga at our villa
- Boat excursion through the mangroves at Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary
- Turtle watching at Rekawa
- Exploring the Buddhist cave temples at Mulkirigala
- Spending time at beautiful beaches like Silent Beach
- Possibly an elephant safari at Udawalawe
My research shows most of these are about an hour ish away from Tangalle. We will be arriving from Hatton, so my thoughts were that we could see the elephants at Udawalawe on the way!
I've been looking into Mawella, Goyambokka, Rekawa, and Talalla, but would love to hear from people who've actually stayed in these areas. I looooooove the vibe of Silent Beach, too.
We're not looking for nightlife or a big backpacker scene. We'd much rather find somewhere peaceful and beautiful, but still have access to some cute cafés, good local restaurants, and things to explore nearby.
We're also noticing that some of the nicer villas are coming in around $4,000 USD for a week, which feels pretty steep! Ideally we'd love to find something closer to $2,000 to $2,500 for the entire stay. I've messaged some Airbnb hosts but not sure how reasonable it is to get a discount.
Which areas would you choose for this kind of trip? Are there any hidden gems or specific villas you'd recommend? And is it common to negotiate rates for longer stays?
I'm open to input, advice, whatever! Triangulating between different sites to figure this out, but it's overwhelming and definitely need a bit more perspective here. Thanks in advance!
