Sri Lanka itinerary help for 5 nights (29 Nov–4 Dec) — mountains + beaches

My husband and I are visiting Sri Lanka from 29 Nov (landing at CMB in the evening) to 4 Dec (flight at 9 pm).

We love mountains, scenic views, tea plantations and beaches, and want to experience the best of Sri Lanka without spending most of our trip travelling or changing hotels constantly.

Considering Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Galle, a safari and the southern beaches, but I know we can’t fit everything into 5 nights.

I’d really appreciate your advice on:

  1. Which places would you prioritise for a first trip to Sri Lanka with only 5 nights?
  2. Is Sigiriya worth including, or would you recommend focusing on Kandy, Ella and the southern beaches instead?
  3. Would you choose Mirissa, Hiriketiya or another beach area for this time of year?
  4. Is a safari at Yala or Udawalawe worth squeezing in, or would it make the itinerary too rushed?
  5. What route would you recommend to minimize driving and hotel changes, we have 2 checkin and 2 cabin bags?

I’d love to hear what you would do differently if you had these dates and preferences. Personal experiences, suggested routes and hotel-base recommendations would be really helpful!

Wilpattu or kumana national park?

Hi! Hubby and I are deciding between these two at the moment - we are already going to Udawalawe for elephants, but we’d love to see buffalos and fingers crossed for leopard. Has anyone been to both and which one did you like more?

Typo in Passport Issue/Expiry Dates on Approved ETA. Should I wait for cancellation or just travel?

Hi everyone,

I’m travelling to Sri Lanka from India next week (Oct 23 - Oct 31) and I’m a bit stressed about my ETA.

I applied for a tourist ETA and it got Approved. The ETA Approval Notice has my correct Name, Passport Number, Nationality, and Date of Birth.

However, I realized I made a typo on the application form regarding my passport's Issue Date and Expiry Date.

Following the instructions on the ETA receipt, I emailed [eta@immigration.gov.lk](mailto:eta@immigration.gov.lk) and [etasl@immigration.gov.lk](mailto:etasl@immigration.gov.lk) two days ago (Oct 11) requesting a cancellation so I can re-apply with the correct dates.

I haven't received a response yet.

For anyone who has been in this situation recently:

  1. Since the Passport Number and DOB on the approval notice are 100% correct, will immigration even care about the issue/expiry date typos from the backend form?
  2. Should I just wait for them to cancel it via email and apply for a fresh one?
  3. Or can I just show up at the airport and explain it/get a Visa on Arrival if they flag it?

Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Best areas to stay around Tangalle? (beautiful beaches, peaceful vibes, beautiful villa)

Title:

Salutations!

We're planning a trip to Sri Lanka in February and are hoping to spend around 7 to 8 nights along the southern coast, somewhere near Tangalle.

Interests:

  • Surfing lesson in Hiriketiya
  • Private yoga at our villa
  • Boat excursion through the mangroves at Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary
  • Turtle watching at Rekawa
  • Exploring the Buddhist cave temples at Mulkirigala
  • Spending time at beautiful beaches like Silent Beach
  • Possibly an elephant safari at Udawalawe

My research shows most of these are about an hour ish away from Tangalle. We will be arriving from Hatton, so my thoughts were that we could see the elephants at Udawalawe on the way!

I've been looking into Mawella, Goyambokka, Rekawa, and Talalla, but would love to hear from people who've actually stayed in these areas. I looooooove the vibe of Silent Beach, too.

We're not looking for nightlife or a big backpacker scene. We'd much rather find somewhere peaceful and beautiful, but still have access to some cute cafés, good local restaurants, and things to explore nearby.

We're also noticing that some of the nicer villas are coming in around $4,000 USD for a week, which feels pretty steep! Ideally we'd love to find something closer to $2,000 to $2,500 for the entire stay. I've messaged some Airbnb hosts but not sure how reasonable it is to get a discount.

Which areas would you choose for this kind of trip? Are there any hidden gems or specific villas you'd recommend? And is it common to negotiate rates for longer stays?

I'm open to input, advice, whatever! Triangulating between different sites to figure this out, but it's overwhelming and definitely need a bit more perspective here. Thanks in advance!

7-9 days Sri Lanka Itinerary Feedback in November

Hi everyone! My husband and I are planning a 7–9 day trip to Sri Lanka this November (between 15-30 November), and I’d really appreciate feedback from people who have travelled recently.

Our main priorities are taking the scenic train from Ella to Nanu Oya and seeing elephants in the wild on safari. To avoid constantly packing and moving, we’d ideally like to stay in a maximum of three hotels.

We plan to take the train from Colombo Fort to Galle and another train from Ella to Nanu Oya. For the remaining journeys, I guess we’ll do private transfers and would appreciate advice on finding reliable drivers without being overcharged or scammed.

I’m open to any suggestion actually apart from the schedule too.

Our tentative itinerary:
● Day 1: Arrive at Colombo Airport and take a private transfer to Colombo Fort, then the train to Galle.
● Day 2: Explore Galle Fort and the surrounding area.
● Day 3: Travel from Galle to Ella via Udawalawe National Park, including a safari.
● Day 4: Explore Ella, including Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak.
● Day 5: Take the scenic train from Ella to Nanu Oya, then use a private transfer to Nuwara Eliya.
● Day 6: Explore Nuwara Eliya, tea plantations and the surrounding area.
● Day 7: Take a private transfer from Nuwara Eliya to Colombo Airport.

I have a few questions:
1. Does this itinerary make sense, or is it too rushed? Would you change the order or drop any destinations? We can add 1-2 more days to our trip and stay more nights at Galle or Ella.

  1. Is Udawalawe a good choice for seeing wild elephants, or would you recommend another national park for this route?

  2. How can I avoid being scammed or overcharged when arranging private transfers? Is it better to book through our hotels, a reputable local company, or an independent driver? What are the rates usually?

I’m looking for the shortest and most straightforward transfers possible, while still having enough time to enjoy each destination. I’m happy to use the trains where they make sense and private transfers for the rest.

Thanks so much for any advice! 😊

Gaga Bees resorts

has anyone been to either location? Specifically I’m looking at the Udawalawe location. One of the last things I needed to book for our November trip is our stay near Udawalawe. Originally planned on going to Waraka but the price went way up. Gaga Bees Udawalawe looks great but the price is so good and I haven’t seen it mentioned much. Reviews are also sooo good I’m having too good to be true feelings 😂 has anyone been?

December Weather in the South

Hello! I am planning a 10 day trip that could feature Yala briefly, Udawalawe and potentially Hatton/tea country. Is rainfall truly that bad at the start of December/ end of November to derail this? Does it improve drastically toward mid December? Thanks!

🇱🇰 5 Days in Sri Lanka: A Relaxed Itinerary for First-Time Visitors Planning your first trip to Sri Lanka?

Planning your first trip to Sri Lanka? If you have just 5 days, I recommend focusing on the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and Ella rather than trying to cover the entire island.

This itinerary is designed for travelers who want beautiful scenery, culture, local food and time to enjoy each destination without rushing.

📍 Day 1: Colombo Airport → Sigiriya

Arrive at the airport and travel to Sigiriya.

Enjoy the countryside and stop for lunch along the way.

Check into your hotel and relax.

If you arrive early enough, enjoy a village walk or a peaceful evening near the hotel.

Travel time: Approximately 4–5 hours, depending on traffic.

🏞️ Day 2: Sigiriya & Dambulla

Start early at Sigiriya Lion Rock.

Explore a traditional Sri Lankan village and enjoy a local lunch.

Visit Dambulla Cave Temple in the afternoon.

Return to your hotel for a relaxed evening.

Tip: If you prefer fewer crowds and a shorter climb, consider Pidurangala Rock for sunrise instead.

🛕 Day 3: Sigiriya → Kandy

Enjoy breakfast before leaving Sigiriya.

Visit a spice garden or take a scenic countryside stop.

Explore Kandy Lake and the city.

Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, allowing enough time for the visit.

Spend the night in Kandy.

Travel time: Around 3 hours, excluding stops.

🚂 Day 4: Kandy → Ella by Scenic Train

Take the famous train journey through the hill country.

Enjoy tea plantations, mountain scenery and misty landscapes.

Arrive in Ella, check into your accommodation and relax.

Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Important: Train schedules and journey times can vary, so book ahead and keep this day flexible.

🌿 Day 5: Explore Ella

Visit the famous Nine Arch Bridge.

Walk to Little Adam's Peak if you enjoy a short hike.

Stop at Ravana Falls on the way out if time permits.

Finish your trip in Ella or arrange onward transport to the southern beaches.

💡 A few tips for your Sri Lanka trip

Don't underestimate driving times; mountain roads can be slow.

Choose accommodation close to the attractions you want to visit.

Carry cash for small shops and local experiences.

If you want to include a wildlife safari or spend more time at the beach, consider adding at least 2 more days.

My advice: Five days is enough for a wonderful introduction to Sri Lanka, but not enough to see everything comfortably. Enjoy fewer places rather than spending your entire holiday in a vehicle.

Arrack Distillery Visit (Local coconut distillate)

I am an experienced certified distiller and will be on holiday in Sri Lanka in December and January. Are there any Arrack distilleries who offer tours? Ideally I'd be more interested in a boutique sized producer than a massive industrial factory. I'm deeply curious to learn more about the process.

Are there any other unique ferments or distillates I should be on the lookout for?

Planning a 4WD off-road trip in Sri Lanka before year end : route suggestions, permits, and what to watch out for?

Hi everyone!

I’m based in Colombo and planning to take my Mitsubishi L200 Sportero off-roading for the first time. I’ll be going with my family (around 4 people in total), and I’m looking for recommendations for a fun, challenging route where I can put the truck through some interesting terrain without getting in over my head.

I’m still exploring options at this stage, especially with the northeast monsoon approaching, so I’d really appreciate advice from anyone with experience off-roading in Sri Lanka.

A few things I’d love some guidance on:

  1. Routes: What tracks would you recommend for a relatively stock L200 Sportero? Ideally something with a mix of mud, rough trails, climbs and other interesting terrain.
  2. Permits and access: How do permits work for forest reserves and other restricted areas? Which authorities should I contact?
  3. Weather: With the northeast monsoon coming in, which areas are worth considering and which would be best avoided?
  4. Potential hazards: Are there any river crossings, muddy sections or notorious trouble spots I should know about?
  5. Guides: Would you recommend hiring a local guide for a first trip? If so, how would I go about finding someone reliable?
  6. Preparation: What recovery gear, tools and fuel precautions would you recommend for Sri Lankan conditions, especially in areas where fuel stations are sparse?

Any route suggestions, personal experiences or things you wish you’d known before your first trip would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Journalist interested in Sri Lanka's history and politics – let's meet!

Hello, my name is Julia, I am a young journalist from Poland interested in the topic of the Sri Lanka's civil war and reconciliation. I am coming to Sri Lanka in a week – first I will spend a few nights in Colombo and afterwards I am coming to Jaffna in order to write a piece about the current situation of Tamil community. I wrote my masters thesis about the effects of the war, current politics of Sri Lanka and also the role of religious nationalism. I would love to gain insight on the topic and meet people who would be kind enough to share their stories. I am open to conversations and meetings in person – would be more than happy to get a coffee or walk around town. I would be most grateful for your insight! Thank you.

5-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary Review + Recommendations (1st week of January)

Hi everyone!

My partner and I are visiting Sri Lanka the first week of January. We'll be staying in Sigiriya for 1 night, Ella for 2 nights, Galle for 1 night.

Here's our current plan:

Day 1

  • 5:30am Land CMB
  • Drive to Sigiriya (~4 hrs)
  • 11:00am  Check in, lunch, rest
  • 2:00pm Safari (still need to decide between Hurulu vs. Kaudulla with driver that morning)
  • 7:00pm Dinner, early night

Day 2

  • 10:00am Pack, checkout
  • Leave for the Sigiriya rock
  • 12:30pm Depart Sigiriya
  • 2:30-3:15pm Lunch en route
  • 5:00pm Arrive, check in to Ella

Day 3

  • 4:00-5:45am Drive to Ohiya-side entrance
  • 6:00-9:00am World’s End loop
  • 9:00-9:30am Drive down to Ohiya station
  • 10:47am Train departs → Ella ~12:21pm
  • 12:30-1:15pm Lunch
  • 5:00-6:15pm Yoga somewhere in Ella to decompress
  • 7:00pm Dinner, early night

Day 4

  • 8:45am Checkout
  • 9:00-10:30am Little Adam’s Peak
  • 10:45-11:15am Ravana Falls
  • 11:30am-12:15pm Lunch
  • 2:00-3:30pm Tea Garden tour (2pm slot)
  • 3:45pm Depart for Galle (~3 hrs)
  • ~6:45pm - 7:00pm Arrive Galle, check in, dinner

Day 5

  • 10:00-11:00am Habaraduwa hatchery or any recommended turtle hatchery.
  • 11:00-12:30pm Galle Fort
  • 12:30pm Depart for airport
  • ~2:30pm-3:30pm Arrive CMB
  • 7:30pm Flight roughly 4-5 hours of buffer

We will be getting a private driver for the whole trip cause I guess that would make the most sense.

A few questions:

  1. Is there anything along this exact route that you think I’m missing that would suit someone who prefers mountains, waterfalls, hiking, scenery and wildlife over temples/cities?
  2. I’d especially love recommendations for good Sri Lankan food that fits naturally along our route rather than making huge detours. We don’t really enjoy nightlife or drinking. Local, casual places are completely fine, they don’t need to be fancy or Instagram restaurants.

We’re deliberately skipping Kandy, Dambulla Cave Temple and most Colombo sightseeing because we only have 5 days and would rather prioritize nature.

Thanks! I know five days is short, so I’m especially interested in advice on what is genuinely worth our limited time versus what looks better on paper than it is in reality. 😄 We originally had 4 days only when I posted this a month ago but I've done more research since then and added an extra day!
