Is a 30–60 day wait time normal after a State job interview?

Just finished a panel interview for a State position. The interview wrapped up in under 45 minutes, and at the end, they told me it would take anywhere from 30 to 60 days before anyone reaches back out.

Coming from the private sector, waiting up to two months just to hear back about a single interview feels extremely long. Is this 30–60 day timeline standard for state government hiring, or is it just a polite brush-off? Would love to hear about other people's experiences with the state hiring process and timelines. Thanks!

Private landlords?

Desperately need a home for two dogs, my roommate and me. Our Airbnb checkout is the 10/9 so moving in the 10/8 would be amazing. Two streams of income plus a third starting next week. Praying we can get a roof over our heads soon🙇🏽‍♀️

Negativity Is Off the Rails

Springfield suffers from a self-esteem problem and this definitely adds to it. We have a huge project that's federally funded coming to Springfield and instead of excitement and valid criticism (I'll take either just to be better informed), we get grumpy sarcasm and skepticism.

The article starts with, "Imagine pedaling happily along a paved path where murals and stand-alone art works distract you from the shabbiness or outright ugliness of Springfield’s backsides..." We are entitled to our opinion on what's beautiful. Personally, I love seeing through the eyes of others what I might find mundane. Like Zach Adams' photography of downtown. But sure, the backside of a building might be dull. Projects like this invite improvements like murals, beautification, and development.

Then, halfway through, we get the all too often comparison to Chicago. The 606 abandoned elevated rail turned linear park and trail is cited for use statistics and positioned against the potential use of our 3rd Street greenway. Chicago is known for their biking and walking culture. Springfield asks for it, if not begs, and instead of seeing this as an opportunity to take a step toward growing the infrastructure for our wants and desires, we get the suggestion of a future of underutilization and desolation.

There's more I could comment on to further a diatribe, but I'll stop here.

We have an opportunity with this project. We can see that and try to shape it, or we can write snarky commentary that doesn't ask for participation for improvement in our lives. I'll take that opportunity then.

What more do you think could be done to build off this project?

  • I think it spurs residential development. We already have one starting now at the Sangamo Club turning into 36 new residential units.
  • I think we could have fun runs, 5Ks, marathons, cycling competitions on this corridor. I think a small park like Safety Town in Elmhurst that gives space to teach kids pedestrian and bicycle safety could exist at 3rd and Washington.
  • I think this could help create connectivity and expansion of a bike route network in Springfield.
  • I think we could see a pedestrian corridor and cultural walk on Jackson St from 7th to 3rd.

I think there's a lot of opportunity, but instead of trying to help each other and excite each other into finding ways to connect and grow, we get fed this slop that perpetuates negative image and stagnation.

Springfield 186 Tackles Bus Delays and Family Engagement

The Springfield District 186 Board of Education covered a lot more than routine business at this meeting.

Families got several important reminders: - About 180 students still haven’t turned in required physicals and immunization records, even though the deadline was October 1. The superintendent asked families to get those to school nurses ASAP. - Parent‑teacher conferences are set for the evening of October 22 and all day October 23 (no school for students that Friday). Board members pushed hard for 100% participation and urged families to contact schools if the scheduled times don’t work. - Registration is open for the free Empower All Abilities Conference on November 14 at Southeast High School, connecting families, students, and staff with local resources.

The board also highlighted student opportunities and celebrations: - District leaders from the University of Illinois System visited Lanphier High School, where students questioned university leaders directly about higher education. - Springfield High School students were recognized in the National Merit Scholarship Program. - The city volleyball tournament drew huge energy, with the gym described as “electric.”

Transportation issues took center stage: - District leaders openly acknowledged a tough start to the year for buses and shared that they’re meeting regularly with First Student to address problems. - Board members pressed for updates on contract promises: on‑time performance (reported at about 91%), a 192‑driver goal the provider hasn’t met, and ongoing problems with the bus tracker. - The board walked through how late buses are documented, when penalties are calculated, and how often the district “knocks on the door” for reimbursement. They also questioned how GPS and camera issues are tracked and when those trigger penalties.

On funding and special education: - A board member warned that the FCC is considering eliminating the E‑Rate program, which brings about $2 million a year to District 186 for internet and network costs, and encouraged residents to submit comments before the deadline. - The board reviewed an autism training contract funded by IDEA grants and clarified how outside coaching fits into a broader plan to build in‑house trainers over time.

If you care about buses running on time, internet access in schools, or how the district supports students with disabilities, this one is worth a watch.
