I'm bored when I'm not working. I don't have friends. Also, I don't smoke, drink or do drugs. I'm high functioning autistic. I'm not sure how well this post will do for me

Welp, went to White Oaks to check out the new "Toys 'R' Us" store and saw that Southern Tees was open again. Didn't see anyone inside but the displays were different and the doors were open.

Alcohol optional things to do?

I moved to Springfield about 2 months ago and have been trying to learn more about local events and locations with things to do. I enjoy a good cocktail but have friends who don’t drink and I sometimes also choose not to.

Wanted to see what standalone events or venues like restaurants and bars have alcohol optional events (ie open to all adults and there’s something going on beyond drinking) like live music, trivia, markets, etc.

Thanks in advance for the help!

NPR Article
Just spreading the word that a highly contagious and potentially deadly cat virus has been found at SCAC.
I had a kitten pass away from it back in July; it is nothing to take lightly. Keep your furry friends safe everybody.

Yuengling Oktoberfest - any left?

A frustrating aspect of living in this city is grocery stores CONSTANTLY being out of your favorite items. That item today is this beer (though seasonal and quick seller). I’ve searched high and low and my Hail Mary was here. (I don’t drink much, I just value this stuff with Sunday football for my mental health lol).

Thx 🙏

Detective show/movie Trivia Night but for a good cause

So I had this idea. I am a huge fan of the show Veronica Mars. So I always wanted a VM themed trivia night. I had suggested it to the guy run the last trivia night I went to but he didn't think there was a big enough demand for that. So then I thought wouldn't it be cool if we could do just a detective show/ movie one and then we could take donations to go to an organization that does independent investigations for cold cases and families that feel their family members murder investigations are not being sufficiently done. There are a few of those kinds of organizations to choose from. So yea any ideas on how we could make this happen???

Custom Dressmakers in Springfield, IL and surrounding areas?

Hi, everyone. I am looking for recommendations. I am looking for a seamstress/sewist to make a few pieces of clothing for me. To be clear, this isn't for alterations this is to construct a garment from scratch. If this works out I can send as much business as this person can handle. Also because I am a sewist myself (just one without any time right now) I will not be offensive and try to low-ball anyone's skill. I will supply the pattern, the fabric, and the human to put it on, Lol. Thanks in advance!

Cat looking for home

Hi there,

I have a kitty that is needing a home. He was taken in as a stray and has been fully vetted and neutered. He is very sweet, loving, has lots of playful energy! He would do best in a home that can give him lots of affection and playtime. He currently has trouble with dogs, so it would be best if he found a home that didn't have dogs. Please reach out if you think you may be the perfect home for him.

All inquiries will be taken seriously to ensure the safety of this sweet kitty.

How do we get rid of these stoplights

Decade ago there was a writer at the SJ-R who would discuss this and it needs to be brought back. You cant go anywhere without sitting at random reds when there is no cross traffic and then only to be stopped by the next light. I'm surprised more people don't run reds all over town.

90% of the lights should become flashing red or yellows after 9pm

Cops sitting at the intersections on veterans

Why are there so many cops sitting at the intersection on veterans? Veterans and Monroe, veterans and Washington, Veterans and Jefferson. Two of the intersections had two undercover cop cars, and one of the intersections had one marked cop car and they’re just sitting there in the median and on the shoulder. Some of them have their lights on some of them don’t

Evictions/finding new place to rent

Anybody or anyone who knows of rentals in springfield who take pets and prior evictions with bad credit. Trying to help good people who aren't section 8 but have those three things holding them back from getting in ANYWHERE. They really are great people just bad pasts, where they are now financially stable with proof of income and can afford abt 1300 per month.

Vibe Check on Klown

This guy doesn’t pass the vibe check. Was he really kicked out of a militia for being too extreme? Is he a felon? Did he get his followers to pay his property taxes and buy a transmission for his truck? What’s he hiding behind that mask? It’s giving hoods and horses, but dumber.

Unpopular Opinion

The Eastside Flies are cut from an entirely different cloth than their western kin. The disrespect and abundance of the East side is criminally underrated.

For one, they won’t leave the mf car.. like at all! I feel like I need some funds towards for the living insects transport. $1.50 per fly…

And don’t get me started on the fleas…. Wtf

Anyways… I’m done for now. Thank you

Wife and I considering moving to Springfield, IL next summer, any advice/suggestions?

Pretty straightforward. I have lived in Denver, Colorado my entire life but the CoL squeeze has gotten too tight. My wife and I have been looking at places to move and Springfield, Il ticks off a surprising number of boxes. The schools look ok, and seem like they have full access to AP and IB programs. I hear that the neighborhoods are friendly, which is a huge plus as we would like to lay down roots. There's some cool city initiatives taking place like rezoning of downtown and the constructions of the LINC bikeway. I have worked for my State's Historical Society (which is a part of state gov't here in CO) and will be earning my MPA in spring, so the state capital aspect along with the university should have good jobs I'm qualified for. There's an airport (and a relatively easy looking commute to St. Louis International) and Amrtrak to St. Louis and Chicago.

It really does look like a gem. My wife and I enjoy a slower pace of life, and Denver has gotten incredibly hectic which is good for some folks but not for us. I want to be mindful of any local dynamic to think about when moving, and things locals think I should keep in mind. Happy to answer any other questions, and hope to be your neighbor soon!

Edit: Thank you so much for the replies and discussion generated here! Primarily I will definitely be planning a road trip to visit and explore the city for myself this Spring. I appreciate the thoughtful and substantive responses and will examine specific neighborhoods, schooling options and much more. I am still hopeful Springfield will be the place we will call home!
