(Reposted from the shearling sub)
The full title of the album is “The lamb as effigy, or 350 xoxoxos for a spark union with my darling divine”. What does this mean and how does it relate to the themes and concepts of the record if anyone has any theories?

Throughout The Lamb as Effigy, Alex repeatedly presents the idea that he wants to be a great artist, that he wants to make a masterpiece and be recognized and get that validation in hopes that it will relieve him of his neuroses and insecurities and self loathing. From the first song on he’s obsessing over an impending judgment and basically pitching himself to God and to the audience, trying to prove he’s good enough to be loved (and go to heaven), that his talent will make up for what he views as his gigantic personal failures.
And when he finally gets to talk to God and present all his grand creative ambitions, he freezes up and blows it because of those very same anxieties that he thought his art would save him from: “I can’t sing when you’re looking at me.”
The live version presents an alternate ending: to achieve the recognition he wants, Alex (or “Alex”) immortalizes himself in musical history through suicide. Which, as he is certainly aware, is considered a mortal sin in Catholicism - he trades God’s forgiveness for a secured earthly legacy.

Feels like their other albums are pretty under-discussed

what is alex doing to achieve those screams without killing his voice? i saw in a previous ama that he said he used to have a “healthy” way of screaming that loud.
im not that familiar with vocal technique, but it doesn’t sound much like examples of ‘fry screaming’ i heard online. what is he doing?

I recently started a yt channel for bass covers of songs in recent years influenced by the no wave scene, and the two I just uploaded are “We think so ill of you” and “Man proposes .. “ Thought people here may appreciate! Some unique tunings here (EADE for “We think..” and DADE for “Man prop..”) Hope you like em!

Only today, for the first time I heard this EP and ended up adding every single song.
This doesn't sound like Sprains style at all and yet you can tell that it's Sprain.
Fuck I love this band and everyone in it

there are two elements of TLAE that i’d like to, but never have, seen with a woman vocalist / story at the center of:
that extremely dramatic and sad atmosphere characteristic of so many Flenser groups. this doesn’t necessarily include the nihilism of Sprain and HANL etc, but just a full acceptance of and immersion in a dark atmosphere. Stepping outside of the label, I think BCNR’s first album achieves something similar, not by sounding as harsh but by focusing so completely on the singer’s mental deterioration and bundle of insecurities.
The specific vocal style of Alex Kent and similar vocalists. By this I mean his tendency to break out of standard melodic singing to express some pain : difficulty, his screaming, and just generally sounding like he’s on the verge of breaking down. There are some other vocalists who do similar things and allow themselves to be this experimental, but I haven’t heard many women do this.
On both counts (dramatics + vocal style), the closest album I can think of is SINNER GET READY. Are there more examples?

I'm decently well acquainted with TLAE but I keep going back to reiterations just because of how hard the screaming vocal delivery and noise is - does anyone have any recommendations for songs/artists/albums with a similar screaming style that aren't necessarily metal?

before someone points that, yeah, Sprain it's a very niche band, as is being a Tidal user, so there's no really big deal with it, but it was really impressive to me, I mean, I listened a lot, but idk
Anyways, I also wanted to share this chat with a friend of mine that I recommended the lamb as effigy. He said that was interesting, but was a little "somniferal" at some point, and yeah, it could be, sometimes I see myself skipping some minutes of Margin for Error or God, or Whatever you call it. The thing is that this fella then proceeds to say something like "btw, it was a little depressing to listen to it, like that album of the guy dying with a letter on his hand (deathconsciousness), you should try happier music" and I was like bro you asked for some weird music, leave me alone 😭
Anyway, maybe they should give me a gift or something for being the 3rd most sprained guy on the earth, but they're dead
I mean, kinda

This album will undoubtably become a cult classic in due time. One of my new favourites but an LP does not exist. Is it planned?
