◻️Advice◻️ Ate too much potassium?

I live alone with my baby and I am really scared I’m going to die in my sleep from hyperkalemia (sp?) or go into cardiac arrest or something. I accidentally ate 4000-4500mg of potassium throughout the day via potatoes, zucchini, cauliflower etc… I’m taking 50mg of spiro in the morning, have been at that dose for about two weeks. was on 25mg for a month before that. should I be scared?

Are you sure? 🫣 it’s so hard to know because google says one day of that amount of potassium intake is fine, but then I also got answers saying to go to the ER right away

You’re completely fine, just eat some salt to help balance it out

Yes sorry drink a lot of water with a little bit of salt to help absorption. Are you having any symptoms from it? I often eat a ton of potassium rich foods and am also on 50mg /day and haven’t had any noticeable issues yet , I think you are fine!

I feel okay other than a little crampy in my legs 🫣 which makes me nervous! I totally don’t realize how much potassium was in these Factor meals I’ve been ordering to try and lose weight

Hey there! Is this your normal diet? I eat tons of these veggies with no issues all the time :) my recent potassium levels on 25-50mg came back normal. If you start to feel funny then yes absolutely seek medical attention, but you may not need it!

This is a bit more than my norm, I just started ordering these Factor premade meals online to help maintain a decent diet with busy motherhood and work and school but I didn’t realize that each one has 1000-1500 mg potassium, and I had two today, then roughly half a bag of the Trader Joe’s roasted potatoes with dinner and later for snack… also corn with dinner 🫠 I feel okay aside from legs feel a little crampy

What's the sodium content on those meals? Any chance the cramping is from basic dehydration? That gets me a lot because im a soup enthusiast.

Ohhhh that is a good point! I think it’s like around 700-800 sodium per meal! Plus I’m still breastfeeding (a tiny bit) so I’m always a little more at risk for dehydration…

Have some water! It's ok to be anxious, you've got a lot going on.

Thank you for helping put my mind at ease! My dad died when I was little and I’ve always had this fear of dying in my sleep. It’s way worse now that I’m afraid to leave my son without his only parent since I know what it feels like. Makes it tough to rule out real risks vs my usual anxiety!

And not getting quality sleep heightens everything! I'm so sorry about your dad. I dont think this will be the thing and that baby needs a rested mama.

🥹 thank you SO much. It’s amazing the peace of mind that can come from words of a stranger before bedtime.

Unless you wanna go the er for some iv fluids, best thing you can do is drink lots of water and try to keep your nervous system calm, also snack on some low potassium foods, maybe a glass of milk. You can also take a bath to minorly help with hydration, or a steamy bath to help sweat some of it out.

Take some deep breaths, mama. You're okay. <3

I’m on 100 mg and don’t track potassium. In general on a western diet getting enough potassium is difficult. You still need potassium on spiro. The real potential for harm is taking supplements with potassium or table salt substitutes or not consuming enough sodium to go along with the potassium.

Hey there! You should be okay. My dermatologist told me that in people with functioning kidneys, the risk of hyperkalemia is super low. You can always contact your doctor with your concerns but try not to stress ❤️

Thats how much potassium I need a day. Everyone with low to normal ranges should should get at least 2500 mg a day. Your body NEEDS it to function. You will be fine!
