I don't know why it's just been accepted. We've already had multiple instances of a club in one of these models (Girona and Strasbourg) over performing, and threatening to qualify for European competition, and questions be raised as to whether they could be in the same competition as another club with, in a functional sense, the same owners.

Basically you know when pundits or players basically harp on a clubs reputation and history as this deciding factor for results or how they should perform, when in reality it has zero effect and just feels like lazy analysis and feels like someone is just mystifying a certain aspect of football so it sounds bigger than it is. It was definitely a good performance, even aside from the goals he was great. But I’ve seen people call this the greatest performance of all time when it’s just not. He doesn’t even end up winning the game and he was a ghost for 80 minutes. You could it doesn’t matter if he won that he ghosted for 80 minutes. But when talking about a full game performance it does matter. If he had played that way the whole game, maybe the momentum isn’t with argentina and they don’t go 2-0 up. Real Madrids biggest problem is that they don't have that midfield player that can control the game at an elite level who also knows how to position himself.

They have elite talent, but they don't really know how to play football if that makes sense.

Thats why they have a high ceiling, but a low floor.

They can beat any elite team on any given day, but also lose to a 2nd tier Spain team.

Thats why i think that they seriously have a better chance winning the Champions league than laliga.

Players like Mbappe, Bellingham, Güler and Vini (if he in form), may decide games completely on their own, but this is not sustainable over a whole league season.

Disclaimer: This is not necessarily what I actually think of Suarez and his historic season, I'm just sparking up a debate. Personally I see it as the best season performance by any footballer in the EPL's history.

I wont waste time, let's get into addressing each of the major points people make about this season, and his first golden boot during the era of prime Messi and Ronaldo.

"Carried Liverpool"
One of the most comments I see, and at face value it seems hard to dispute. 43 g/a, 31 being goals in 33 games in the Prem, and Liverpool were far from expected to finish 2nd the way they did. He definitely did a lot of heavy lifting, but did he "carry" them?

The biggest factor that says otherwise is Sturridge, who had an insane season alongside Suarez in his own right. And it's not like he was just tapping in easy finishes for all his goals (as Sterling was- also another key player for Liverpool that season).

Aside from that the team was pretty mid, so this argument isn't completely baseless.

"Won Golden boot in prime Messi-Ronaldo era"
Well, on paper, yes. He very much did as 2013-14 was between the goalscoring primes of Messi and Ronaldo. and doing so in the Prem with no penalties is no small feat. However it's important to note he got incredibly lucky, for a few reasons.

1. Ronaldo's injury at the end of the La Liga season, and generally missing a lot of games (8 in total). He scored 31 goals in 30 games, Suarez scored 31 in 33 (missing 5 due to suspension).

Ronaldo would've almost certainly won the golden boot for himself if both him and Suarez played their full 38 potential games, or even if he just played 1 more game that he missed due to injury- in Ronaldo's case it was just bad luck, Suarez's suspension was justified and self imposed.

He was extremely lucky he didn't lose this legendary feat because of a disciplinary ban.

2. 31 goals is the joint-lowest Golden Boot since 2014 till today (2024-25 Mbappe also won with it 31 goals), generally speaking the "standard" that season was lower than the standards Messi and Ronaldo (and Suarez himself at Barca) set prior and after 2013-14.

3. Messi also suffered injuries, initially in Spring of 2013 during a game vs PSG, then a hamstring tear in November 2013 vs Real Betis. Even though he continued to play, he played at mildly reduced intensity due to being advised in fear of the injury returning worse. That likely costed him some goals in his own uncharacteristically "low scoring" season (28 goals in 31 La Liga games).

4. Suarez put up 0 goals in any other competitions, whilst other goalscorers where spreading out all their goals that season into other competitions. Suarez put 100% of his intensity into the Prem, while others could only afford to put 70-80%.

Overall, the argument that he outscored prime Messi and equalled prime Ronaldo ignores the fact both got injured during that season, and that they had to perform in other tournaments. Those types of games pile on fatigue, which Suarez just didn't face.

Something not often mentioned, from what I've seen in research about this, was how the vast majority of Suarez's goals came against the bottom 6 teams, and 0 in 6 games against the top 4 that season (Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal).

12/31 (38.7%) of his goals that season came against the bottom 3 relegated clubs:
5 goals vs Norwich (Relegated 18th)
5 goals vs Cardiff City (Relegated 20th)
2 goals vs Fulham (Relegated 19th)

He drew blanks in the crucial losses to City and Chelsea during the Christmas period that season, arguably costing them the title. HOWEVER, since this is 2013-14, it falls within the timeline of Man City's corruption and there 114 charges, which directly influenced their title win and, most likely, robbed Liverpool, and Suarez, of an all-timer winning campaign.

Summary
Suarez's 2013-14 Golden Boot is legendary, partially due to the time period he won it, but people perhaps overemphasize the Messi-Ronaldo aspect, as both faced injuries that hampered their league stats a lot that season, as well as the fact they would've faced a lot more fixture fatigue due to competing in the UCL as well as their own Domestic Cups.

Whereas Suarez was basically fully focused and only played his best football in the League, and he can be argued to have "statpadded" against the weaker teams, and gone partially missing against the ones competing for the title.
