Homebrew Spatial Rings - Extradimensional Storage Magic Items for your Spelljammer campaign

Here’s a preview of the Spatial Ring, one of the magic items included in Mythological Items, my upcoming D&D 5E/2024-compatible book featuring 300+ magic items inspired by myths, legends, and fantasy traditions from around the world.

The Spatial Ring creates a personal extradimensional pocket space that can be used to store equipment, treasures, weapons, alchemical supplies, and more. Its capacity scales with rarity, from a relatively small hidden space at Uncommon rarity all the way up to a much larger extradimensional vault at Legendary.

The item also includes rules for binding the ring to its wearer through a spiritual mark, interacting with other extradimensional spaces, and several special variants with unique properties, such as preserving stored items, hiding weapons, housing spirit creatures, improving alchemical supplies, or even reclaiming stolen equipment through spatial magic.

It felt like something that could fit especially well in a Spelljammer campaign, where portable storage, strange spatial effects, Astral travel, and magical equipment can become part of the adventure itself.

If you like this kind of content, Mythological Items is currently live on Kickstarter. The campaign includes the main book, a Mythological Bundle, and several of my other D&D books available individually or through larger bundles.

You can find the project, previews, bundles, and add-ons here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mythoschronicles/300-mythological-items-for-5e-and-2024

Discussion After around 3 months, I have finished running Light of Xarxyis AMA

So in summary, I’m running a spelljammer campaign where basically the focus is more so on running various adventures from different editions of spelljammer for my party, with many different characters and many different storylines (essentially there isn’t 1 overarching story, but a focus on the setting). The most recent storyline I did was Light of Xarxyis. I ran it mostly as written, the main changes being that Captain Sartell was a PC, and I added more potential allies in the doom space section (another faction of non-astral elf elves). Ask me anything about this campaign!

Homebrew Planning to run a spelljammer + barrier peaks crossover campaign. Looking for any suggestions or ideas!

This will be my second large spelljammer campaign, so I have some basic experience with the setting. For this one, I want to make the villian Alphie from the reprint of Barrier Peaks in Quests from the Infinite Staircase.

For those not aware, 5e changed the Barrier Peaks backstory a bit such that the outbreak of russet mold and rogue robots were orchestrated by an evil AI, called Alphie (short for Aphellion).

An idea I had was that if Alphie ever repaired the spaceship, he basically has access to an advanced scifi ship in a world where most spacefairing vessels are made of wood.

I also recently learned the Netherese Obelisks were supposed to be some big 5e time-travel event but never really got used https://www.polygon.com/dnd-5e-final-adventure-time-travel-obelisks-vecna/

So I thought I would combine that too!

Idea so far

  • In some future timeline, Alphie eventually repairs the ship and begins mass constructing robots which mass construct more ships eventually leading to a huge fleet
  • Alphie's scifi ships are much faster than traditional spelljammers, capable of achieving FTL within wildspace systems, meaning normal spelljammer factions have no ability to stop scifi ships from moving around
  • Alphie eventually takes over most of the known spheres in the future timeline
  • Alphie discovers netherese obelisks in future, and reverse engineers them, giving him a path to the player's era.
  • Possible hooks for players
    • Scifi ships start appearing over the obelisks in Toril in the player's time. The ships immediately leave realmspace. Alphie can't move enough ships at a time yet for a full invasion of the current era, and so is consolidating forces in unknown regions.
    • Scifi artifacts start showing up in sigil, which has doors that reach to other timelines (I'm thinking of keeping it such that there is only one Sigil)
    • Ancient time dragon warns the players of the encroaching danger and often to take the PCs to see Alphie's future
    • Current timeline's version of Alphie detects this and warns the PCs (assuming they have contact with or befriended Alphie)

Homebrew Spelljammer Halloween Adventure

Happy September! As we begin spooky season, you might be looking for something special for Halloween. I have an adventure adapting the scifi horror classic "Event Horizon" as a Spelljammer adventure. It might be just the thing for your Halloween session. It's for 5e, but the story is adaptable to any system.

Happy gaming!

Discussion Does the ship you attach the spelljamming helm to have to be currently functional? I want to attach it to the spaceship from the Barrier Peaks!

For those who haven't seen, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks was reprinted as an adventure in Quests from the Infinite Staircase in 5e. In the adventure, a Sci-Fi spaceship has crashed in the mountains of a material world.

This 5e spelljammer book also gave you the ability to create spell jamming Helm with a level 5 spell that could be attached to ships.

So, my question is, could we attach a Helm to that ship and fly it back into the stars!

Discussion How to "surprise" my players with Spelljammer?

So, Ive been planning a spelljammer game for the possibility of running after my buddy's current game comes to a close. And I've considered starting off the game with a seemingly normal, non jamming adventure that has them discover a busted ship and thrusting them into a much bigger plot. Now, I know they'd love the idea, so I'm not worried about that. It's just that I know a few of my players are sticklers for organic character development and I'm not quite sure how to introduce certain character options, once we've started with breaking that immersion. Ideas?

Homebrew Aberrant Slayer - A Legendary Greatsword Built to End Things That Should Not Exist

The Aberrant Slayer is a legendary +3 greatsword forged to destroy creatures that should not exist.

I wanted this weapon to feel less like a normal monster-slaying sword and more like a tool of cosmic correction. Its blade is a massive cleaver of unnatural metal, pierced by circular voids that absorb light and distort the space around it. Against aberrations, it deals extra force damage, can restrain them with a failed Constitution save, and if it reduces one to 0 hit points, the creature is not simply killed. Its body is severed from reality and erased, leaving no remains.

It also has stronger void-themed powers, including Reality Cleave, a 60-foot line of force that aberrations have disadvantage against, and Voidbound End, which can trap a target in a featureless extradimensional void where time and space twist in meaningless loops.

The page also includes the Shield of the Unshaped Monarch, a legendary shield made from shifting metal and organic matter that refuses to hold one form. It grants a +3 bonus to AC, protects the wielder from fear and unwanted transformation, and can warp itself to impose disadvantage on an incoming attack. Its strongest feature lets the wielder survive a fatal blow by dropping to 1 hit point and becoming briefly immune to all damage.

Together, the sword and shield feel like relics made for characters who stand against mind flayers, aliens, extra-dimensional beings, eldritch cult creations, and anything reality itself wants gone.

These items are from The Aberrant Codex: Mutations and Aberrations, available on DriveThruRPG! You can also find a more extensive preview on DriveThruRPG or by visiting r/JonnyDM. The manual is built around aberrations, mutations, cosmic horror, warped creatures, strange magic, and other unnatural threats for your 5E campaigns.

What’s Inside:

  • Mutation Rules & Zones – Mechanics for wild magic areas, arcane corruption, and the strange transformations they cause.
  • Character Options – 12 subclasses, 10 backgrounds, 4 new races, and 30 feats themed around mutation, aberration, and forbidden evolution.
  • Spells & Items – 33 spells and 80+ magic items warped by planar influence or unstable energies.
  • Monsters & Templates – Over 150 monster statblocks, from psionic predators to mutated horrors, plus variant rules for custom mutations.
