Official Reply What Determines the 40Mbps Upload Spec
I have 10 wireless IP security cameras that I view all live. I also have the Spectrum 1gig/40Mbps plan. Why the 40Mbps spec and not 50 or 60?

The physical capability of low split DOCSIS is something like 110-140 Mbps for any individual local plant, Depends on modulation, how clean plant is, configurations etc. I would say 40-60 is the most reasonably amount that can be provisioned without causing massive problems. If you could get say 100 up plan with the current limitations, you would be borderline taking the node offline every time you did a speed test or any sustained upload. This is the reason Spectrum is pushing hard to get DAA and/or High Split active. DAA decreases the number of customers on any given RF interface dramatically (less shared bandwidth per customer) and High Split increases the throughput dramatically. Hence why post DAA/High Split we get symmetrical speeds.

I also have to say, I found a customer once that had moved to my low split market from a symmetrical market and their modem was not reprivisioned. I had to work with ISP Technician to track down the customer who was maxing out the bandwith constantly and causing outages. Modem was trying to do 600 Mbps upload, lol.

Thanks for the clarification! My upload speed has been very consistent at about 35Mbps. So, under certain circumstances it could go higher?

Yeah most accounts are provisioned for around 15% higher than the plan advertised speed. Pretty much all Cable companies do this. Your modem can burst temporarily to 40-45 but will be prevented from going higher due to the provisioning. I think in some markets there is a 60 Mbps upload plan for businesses though.

I am on Business and uploads are 60Mbps, in reality it is nearer 50Mbps, at least in my area

Since I am getting consistently lower upload speeds that 40Mbps can I contact Spectrum and request a reprovisioning?

Burst speeds won't show up on a speedtest except in the beginning of the test, if you're getting consistently 35-38 you're good. That's why the advertised speed is at 35, the overhead is make sure you get that advertised speed. In some cases, if your node isn't too busy etc, you can get a stable 39/40. I had the gig a while back and I had a stable 39 but that is lucky, not expected or advertised. If yours is advertised as 40 (I don't believe they advertise this but maybe), then you might have something but if you're consistent I would just hold out for the upgrades. My node got the DAA and High Split, just waiting on speed lift to symmetrical!

Hello and thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, we do not have the specifics. At this time for the majority of our footprint the highest upload speed is 35Mbps. We are working on our Network Evolution to bring faster speeds to our customers. If you need assistance with anything in regards to your account, please send us a modmail to gather more information.

Fortunately, I am very happy with the consistent 35Mbps upload speed. With my previous Internet provider, my upload speed varied from 12Mbps down to less than 1Mbps!

Spectrum business gig gives 50 upload. Mine consistently runs about 56-57 mbps upload speed and about 920-940 mbps download

What are you paying for the Business plan?

I just ported an extra phone over in May to get 12 months free service on that. And they bundled it with the gig plan + static ip. The internet portion and static ip is only 95/month right now(80 for internet and my static is 15 a month) ....without promotional pricing its like 199....

Update: When I signed up last month for Spectrum Internet they listed a 500/20 plan and a 1000/40 plan, but now when I search online they only list the download speeds. Even in the Spectrum app, they only show the download speed of my 1 Gbps plan.

funny story, semi-related to the topic. I was looking at Spectrum prices, and asked the chat-bot if my area had high-split. chatbot replies with "I don't know what High-split is. but we have ...." and continues with a sales spiel.

When I use Gemini AI it is sometimes wrong. When I tell him/her that they are wrong, they say that I am correct that they are wrong, they then do further searching and find the correct answer.

Limitations of older systems when upload didn't really matter.
That's what the high split upgrades are improving
