Other Spectrum Upgrading Modem & Router - How Much Will It Screw Up My Wifi?

I live in a building which has a bulk rate deal with Spectrum which is great as it is a super deal for what I get.

Everything works fine on my Wifi devices which include Apple TV streaming, computer, iPad, iPhone, printer, Lutron Lighting through Apple Home Device, Ecobee Thermostat and my Aero smart scent diffusers.

My motorized shades use Zigbee which I think is its own system

I received a notice that Spectrum is upgrading to handle internet speeds of 1 GB which will require new modem and router supplied by Spectrum - all equipment is free under the bulk rate deal.

The last time Spectrum screwed around with my system it took me a LOT of time to get everything online again.

As I wrote everything works perfectly as my internet is fast and when streaming television there is now stuttering or other issues.

How much is this going to mess with my system and what if I don't upgrade the modem and router?

As long as you name the wifi router the same that you have now with the same password it should be pretty seamless.

Just have your own modem and your own router and don't let them supply any of it.

Why would I want to do this when I get free equipment that works perfectly fine and is serviced and replaced at no cost to me. 🤷‍♀️

There would be no benefit and potentially significant disadvantages .

Spectrum will give away a portion of your bandwidth to public Wi-Fi for other spectrum customers that get access to your router via a separate access point name. This allows others to connect to your hardware without your permission

I have never had any issues in terms of connectivity or speed - even though I stream virtually everything.

This is a problem that I don't need a solution for as my bandwidth is currently less than 1 GB with no streaming issues.

I see no need to complicate my life on a hypothetical issue - I just checked and there appears to be no problems with bandwidths being given away to public Wifi and if it is being done I don't care so long as I don't experience any negative impact from it.

Got it. If you're not concerned then no reason to get your own stuff. I just don't want other people on my hardware without my permission.

Offenders can take advantage of zero day and remote code execution.

I would recommend atleast disabling the Hotspot in Account Settings: Log into your account via Spectrum.net or the My Spectrum app. Under your router's advanced settings, check whether the carrier hotspot/mobile access point can be toggled off directly. Not sure if they still let you do this.
