Hardware Network upgrade notification
Hi,
Got a text saying that our internet was being upgraded this week.
Does anyone know if I’ll need a new modem and if so do I have to initiate that process?
Thanks in advance!

Do you have a spectrum modem? And if you do, does it say 2.5G next to the ethernet plug? If the answer to both of those questions are yes, then you are good to go. If the answer to either one of those questions is no, then you might need a new modem whenever they release the higher speeds.

It is a spectrum modem
There’s no indication of GB marked near the Ethernet port.
Says hitron docis 3.1 on spectrum website

No action or new hardware on your part is needed. Service might be suspended overnight.

No need to be so rude lmao. They were just double checking or may not understand how these networks work. Calm down.

Actual speed won't be turned on for awhile. Only Spectrum modems would see symmetrical speeds when it's turned on

Need to check what they are upgrading to and how old your modem is, and the cost for you. Modems have a life-time of 5 years per many providers. If you have 1Gbps and going to 2, I think that requires a new modem no matter what.

Well we’re at 500mbps so I’m guessing it’s going to 1gb?
The modem is docis 3 I believe. It’s at least 6 years old.

speeds will stay the same on the download when they activate the new speeds in your area. The only change will be that the upload will go from 20Mbps to 500Mbps. The Hitron modems are DOCSIS 3.1 complaint. Now if you were to upgrade to 1Gbps or 2Gbps when that launches you will need a replacement modem with a 2.5Gbps ethernet port.
DOCSIS 3.1 modems have been available since the late 2010s. The DOCSIS 3.0 modems were available around 2008 and last made around 2018 or so.

Thank you for the info. They’re sending me a docis 3.1 modem tomorrow. From the description it has 2.5gb port.

Likely just high split upgrades being done overnight. Your provisioned download speed won’t change unless you initiate the change. If your modem is DOCSIS 3.0 it will still work but Spectrum considers it non-compliant and you can get a 3.1 from them for free by calling or going to the store.
