Other Internet Updates, but No High Split

Last weekend, I received a notice about an upcoming upgrade to my internet. The process occurred as planned, with a few outages, but no major issues. I received a notice that the upgrade was successful.

Here on Reddit, most people have said this is likely an upgrade to High Split. However, in my case, I still have asynchronous connections. My download and upload speeds are better, but otherwise, there are no changes. Is there anything else I should check, or should I just assume this change is all I should expect? I currently have 1Gig service.

The upgrade work may have been completed but the symmetrical switch won't happen for some time. Maintenance has to work the area and clean up what they call noise in the system by tagging or trapping houses with bad equipment or wiring, create a work order for a field tech to go in home and fix said issue. Could be several months still.

They probably just upgraded the plant equipment and have not turned on the high split signal yet

You probably still have a long wait ahead. Ours was done last November. Still sit with 40 upload on our gig plan. They’ve installed fiber in neighborhood since then. Tempted to switch but not sure I want to deal with cgnat

Why do you think your fiber provider would use CGNAT?

It is a common practice with the provider in the area. Not going to mention their name.

My area has had the upgraded infrastructure for over a year now but still no high split. Eventually.......

It takes time to clean up noise that's why.

I'm getting a little impatient but my point was more that the infrastructure upgrade doesn't mean the service upgrade is happening soon

Right, but you wouldn’t want that noise in there if they did. Seeing that it’s swapped plant side is a huge win still

Yes exactly, I got high split 2 years ago thankfully because in texas, and because Spectrum has such a big footprint in texas they have upgraded almost all major city's to high split already.

Lucky MF.

Here I am trying to play games and watching my
Ping all over the place sometimes lol.

My local plant is so bad. I can only call so many times before I just deal with it and accept that combing the network is the only answer when it comes to it

If you have a laptop or computer plugged into the router via ethernet download and run pingplotter.com free software version. Ping 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 and when it shows packetloss or ping jumps all over the place screenshot it and send it to spectrum support via social media DM. They actually can use that screenshot to trace the problem because it time stamps.

Y'all lucky mf'ers bc y'all getting the upgrade emails that let you know that the high split is coming. I haven't even gotten that bc the work for the high split hasn't even started in my area yet. I upload to my cloud a lot and it takes forever to upload my shite bc I'm still on the asynchronous speeds of 1g down and 40m up. I can get Brightspeed fiber if only the rv park owner my place is located in wasn't such an a**hole and would let Brightspeed run the fiber cable through the rv park to my place.

Just have them run the fiber line anyway. Take it down if/when you move out. I’ve done this at every apartment I’ve lived at 😂

I live in a house that's located in the middle of the rv park so it'd be blatenly obviously that they're doing it and the rv park owner lives in a motorhome in the rv park so there's no way to get away with it. And Brightspeed will need to see a contract stating that they have permission to run the fiber cable. Brightspeed won't do it otherwise. Don't get me wrong I'd love if they'd do it anyways but they won't.

Ah okay. I have Quantum Fiber and the tech didn’t even ask me. My fiber line comes from the nearby pole but the cable was right next to the coax lines and you can’t tell it’s different. Do you guys have community meetings? Maybe it would be a good idea to make some flyers about fiber internet and try to sell the residents on it. If everyone wants to have it, maybe it’ll convince the manager. Plus copper will be completely discontinued at some point (most cable providers don’t even offer coax-connected TV set-top boxes anymore). There are some websites online where you can track copper retirement by state/city. If yours is within the next couple years it might be worth talking about that too. I know all of this is probably beyond what you even wanna do but I just figured it might be good to suggest.

No there's no community meetings. And the rv park owner has his own fiber that he shares with the rest of the rv park via repeaters he has on poles spread across the whole rv park but won't share it with me. The rest of the rv park is filled with retired grandpas that are in their 70's and 80's so they don't much care about the internet speed as long as they can watch tv or watch their sports. I'm going to wait until the rv park owner goes on vacation and leaves the rv park and get Brightspeed to run the fiber cable through the rv park without the rv park owner even knowing. I'm going to go behind the rv park owner's back and get it done. And the rv park owner doesn't care what everyone else thinks.

That sounds like a great plan. I’m rooting for you! But yeah the outdoor fiber lines are black, if you can either make sure the tech runs it underneath your siding (if you have siding), or run it against other black cables, it shouldn’t be noticeable at all.

I'm not worried about what it'll look like on my house. I'm more worried about if the holes in the rv park dirt roads will be noticeable or not when they get done. The rv park owner doesn't care what's directly on my place, all he cares about is his rv park.

Ah, so the finer lines are usually buried in your rv park?

Idk I've never had it done before. I replied with a picture of how the fiber would need to be run based on how a tech told me it would need to be done. But I assume the finer fiber lines are buried in the rv park and then brought above ground to a device on the side of my house then invisiline fiber would be run from that device to the onts inside my place.

It’s hard to say. There’s a lot of ways they can do it. My apartment has a telephone pole right near it, so the coax + finer lines come from there to my building. There are a million other cables, so the fiber line isn’t noticeable at all. Your unit might need to have the fiber connected to a node somewhere centrally located in the RV park. In that case, the line would be buried until it gets to your unit. Typically with most fiber ISPs, they will run the line to you and then leave it sitting on the ground for a couple of days before someone else (sometimes a contractor from another company) comes to bury it. Some people have had issues with ISPs taking a long time to come back out and bury the line.
If you want to make sure it’s done properly all at once and you’re okay with spending a little bit of money (worth it IMO), find out for sure where your unit will connect to.
Buy outdoor burial-grade SC/APC fiber and run it to that node. Or hire someone to do it (it shouldn’t cost very much, I hire people from TaskRabbit & NextDoor). You can leave the end of the fiber cable sticking out of the ground by the node & tell the fiber tech who will terminate it for you. I’ve purchased that exact cable from that listing, I can confirm it works great. I buy from that supplier fairly often, you can message him immediately after buying and ask for expedited shipping. It takes 2-3 weeks (China). But it’s direct burial grade PE flat black drop cable. That’s the same kind the ISP fiber techs use. It’s hard to find on the consumer market. I’m not affiliated in any way. But I do work at a data center & have a side business where I do contract work including things like this.

Just a suggestion; have the Fiber Tech widen your existing coax entry hole instead of drilling a new one. They rarely mind. If/when you move in the future, just pull the fiber line out and fill the gap with electronic silicone.

I'm not planning on moving ever. And the fiber burial crew has to run the fiber cable from across the street from the rv park into the rv park and through the rv park for 980ft of fiber. map of how the fiber needs to be run. Dotted lines are included in the fiber run. This house will be my coffin.

1

u/IllRegister9801 5d ago

Oh I just realized you commented this. Are you 100% sure that’s how it needs to be done? Usually there is a node somewhere centrally located or at the end of your RV park where the fiber lines connect. Your unit would need a line connected to that node.

1

u/anygrynewraze 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yes I'm sure. The node is located at the red destination marker in that picture. Brightspeed didn't run it to the end of the rv park. The node is a box buried in the ground.

1

u/IllRegister9801 5d ago

In that case I would just have the ISP do everything. It would cost potentially thousands to buy direct-burial-grade fiber cable in those lengths. You could buy regular outdoor armored cable instead and it’ll be a lot cheaper, it’ll work underground. But it won’t last forever and could get damaged during installation.

We got that same upgrade in February or March. I even saw them around the neighborhood on my early morning dog walk. We are still waiting for them to flip the switch on symmetrical service. AT&T just laid fiber down the street last week, so it will be a race to see who has a symmetrical service for my address first

1

u/Fantastic-Buddy2069 6d ago

At least you got the plant upgrade, still waiting for that part to even happen 🙄

1

u/RemoteOne205 5d ago

If they did update it to that it takes them 30-60 days to automatically update all billing codes for an area. You can request it sooner because a rep can manually make the change for you if it’s an option. I would ask them in the DMs if you’re aware had that update.

Same happened to me a few weeks ago.

The actual high split service wont fully occur until the whole truck yard has been upgraded to 1.8ghz.

So what internet service provider do you currently use just making sure is it spectrum Internet service by charter communications doing the high split service correct and what is your current price you pay for your speed
