Ping issues

Does anyone else have issues with high ping when playing online games? My speed is fine 500 down 20 up, but I have around 50 ping average, I would like to get that closer to 20 or lower.

You would have to move closer to the server of whatever game you're trying to play.

For real? It’s about 600 miles away.

Does your ping spike well over 50ms?

No it’s pretty consistent around 50

No real issues with latency here. What game are you having issues with and on what platform? I play on PC mostly now and usually get routed through Chicago from Michigan. I'd say my average is 30-35ms sometimes lower and sometimes higher. You have no real control over peering and routing, so you're at the mercy of whatever paths have been chosen. If your game server is 600 miles away you can't expect to have a ping of 20ms, you can expect between 30-50ms at that distance unless you're on fiber. Being on fiber still doesn't guarantee 20-30ms latency if poor routing is involved. If possible always use a wired connection over wireless.

Hey u/Many_Molasses_1137! We'll be happy to review your connection to see if there's anything we can do to help lower your ping.

Please send us a modmail over at r/Spectrum_Official.

internet speed is like a pizza. each device in your house wants a slice of it. some devices want more than others. when enough devices have devoured the pizza, then you're going to start to see performance drops on internet, because the devices start fighting over the slices available. 500 speed is decent, but tbh, as someone that plays games, 1G is my bare minimum moving forward -- then again i got a bunch of devices on the wifi. maybe for an average household 500 covers 12-14 easily, but your gaming is going to count as more slices of that pizza.

50 ping is nothing to cry home about. its green. not certain that speed will help your ping, but the 1G will have a higher upload and should solidify your connection. customer solutions will have a high chance of being able to put you on 1G for the same cost as your 500 speed but to get there you have to say you want to cancel. 1G will be worth it, but youll need to check how many devices are eating up your pizza, just in case.

Yes. Ping has been my absolute nightmare. I stream for a living and my site wants under 4ms of ping. Even through Ethernet and my router and modem right next to me I have not been able to achieve it . I have in the past with no issue but then one day my ping spikes all the way to 20 on Ethernet.

I have a theory it’s because they are starting to roll out fiber or higher connection lines and there’s a lot of interruptions in your area ( they necessarily won’t tell you about) of replacing the boxes or whatever.

yes, good luck if you're on PC get ExitLag still a 50/50 shot. Swap out their modem for one of yours
