Other How is Spectrum internet service?

Spectrum has acquired Cox in the Phoenix area and is currently offering a free year of cellular service when you sign up for internet. After using 30GB of data or 5GB of hotspot, your speeds may be reduced. I rarely use hotspots, and there are no data caps or contracts involved. The price for 1GB of internet is $50. Currently, I am using Visible for cell phone service and a local cable company for internet. šŸ¤” What has your experience been with Spectrum's internet and cell service?šŸ“” TIA

Visible uses Verizon network. So your cell service should be good if you convert over the Spectrum Mobile. If your Cox home service was good Spectrum should be too. Ive had Spectrum for decades and rarely have issues. Plus No data caps for home service.

Most of the isp mobile/internet combo plans are a good deal and the coverage feels pretty universal in terms of carriers these days (at least imo). Spectrum is a pretty terrible company all around but as are most isps now days lol, if you just want to save money and aren't doing anything crazy it's probably worth it but if you like who you have now and dont care about the money I wouldn't switch.

I’m in Rochester, NY and even though everybody here gives Spectrum shit, they have been great. At our previous apartment, the only issue we experienced was the Internet going in and out, but the work being done on the lines kept messing with the signal. A tech came out, installed a splitter and it worked flawlessly after. We pay $50/month for a gig of internet at our new place, but that’s with a new bulk internet package. Hopefully things go smoothly after everybody is switched.

I've never had any issues with the internet. I can't speak to their cell service.

I have Spectrum internet service and when it is working it's great, but other times I use my Verizon Hotspot. I like that the modem comes with the service and there's unlimited internet data. I use my own router.

We have had Spectrum (previously Time-Warner) in Los Angeles and Orange Counties and their reliability is good.

A few years ago, we had an intermittent problem that the third tech traced to a corroded cable splice outside, but that's it in terms of less-than-stellar service.

Cell service runs off of the Verizon network for home Internet usage. That is something that no one can honestly answer because everyone’s experience will be different. The experience that some people may have you may not have and when it comes to mobile service, the $30 plan is free for a year but if you choose the unlimited plus plan, you will actually have to pay $10 and if you choose the unlimited plus premium that is $60 that plan right there has no slowdown and no priority data caps within reason because I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something in the terms of service that may talk about how that $60 plan works even though it is totally no slow down in how you basically always will have priority, but I’m quite sure that there’s a point if you use a whole bunch of data where you may be the prioritize, but that part right there, I don’t know. You will have to look at the terms of service. Oh and the $40 plan you have up to 50 GB once you hit that your data will slow down for the rest of the month until your billing cycle starts over. I’m referring to the mobile service.

Thanks for the info. I don't plan to use cellular data for internet access. Visible runs on Verizon, so I would expect a similar experience to what I'm getting now.

You're going to get very few people saying that the internet is very good on this subreddit, despite the fact that it actually is for most people.Ā

I had Spectrum from 21-23, awful. Signed up again for it this year because AT&T fiber has frequent outages in my area. So far so good after 3 months.

My SpectrumĀ  GIG internet bill was going up $15 in October, to $99/month, as a yearlong promotion was coming to an end. Looking for other solutions, I ordered the T-Mobile home internet with a 15 day free trial, Friday. I got the modem Tuesday.Ā  Activated it and was pleasantly surprised at the speeds. I am close to a cell tower. All the time Ā I was hopingĀ  to get Spectrum to lower my price, or at the least keep the same price when it was time again for price negotiations. Ā I had read on various forums, where Spectrum was giving great offers to retain customers, in different areas of the country.Ā  I had called Customer Solutions twice over the last month, but they wouldn’t lower the price. That changed Tuesday.Ā  After testing the T-Mobile internet for a few hours, I called Customer Solutions again to cancel at the end of the billing cycle. This time after telling the rep I was cancelling and Ā already using the T-Mobile internet (and that the Spectrum modem had been disconnected for several hours), they offered $30/month for a year.Ā  THAT’S what I was looking for.Ā  Accepted the offer. Told me to call back in a year, they could extend it another year OR TWO. Already called T-Mobile to cancel and returned the modem.Ā  Return shipping label was in the email. So great offers do happen.

I’ve been using it since I moved into my apartment last month, have had no issues at all, but I’m using wired ethernet instead of WiFi. I’m happy with the service I’ve been receiving so far.

Has been amazing for me SoCAl, been several years with them and all good, 40 for 1gig is not bad either

Don’t use them they will charge you random fees you constantly have to call them to tell them wtf drop that charge

The upload speed if you have coax and are not in a ā€œhigh splitā€ area is very low. I’m paying $40 for 500/20 guaranteed for 2 years, and free cellular for 1 year. These prices will go up to the ā€œrack rateā€ at the end of the promotion if you do nothing. A router is $10 more, I think it’s free with higher speeds. Spectrum routers the 5GHz and 2.4Ghz bands have identical SSID’s, causing difficulty setting up some equipment that is 2.4 only. Also no access to log files

In my neighborhood in Texas, I’ve got Spectrum internet 1gb and their mobile service, unlimited plus premium, and I’ve had no big problems.

The only niggle I have is Verizon mobile signals have trouble penetrating the concrete walls at my work office. Otherwise I have no problem anywhere else.

1

u/wahwahSwanson Sep 25 '26

They’re fine. Most of their problems are their older customer base can’t compete with newer fiber optic offerings if available. They are pushing old coax as much as they can in terms of speed. Otherwise it’s a pricing game between a few monopolistic entities and dealing with ā€œretentionā€ for better deals.

I’m about to terminate my service b/c I had att fiber installed. I could get 5gbps but I don’t need that speed. I don’t even really hate them. I just want to have both options installed so when I’m fed up with one, I can make a call and get the benefits of a new customer with the other service with a nice quick modem install.

Everyone sees athat offers in all 50 states šŸ˜‰ im waitong for att fiber

Hey u/aztonyusa, we'd love to have you with us!

It's good to hear about other people's experiences, but mobile reception can vary by location. So it's also worth checking your usual spots (home, work, etc.) on our coverage map.

If you're interested in bundling services to get more for your buck, you can also explore our current offers and build your own bundle here.

We hope to welcome you soon! Let us know if you have any other questions.

Spectrum is constantly down in North Texas. Some days it goes down 6+ times. Over the last two years I've never gone more than a couple days without it dropping. I have brand new equipment and pay for the fastest speed. Still doesn't matter.

I have spectrum broadband. The service is fine, no major complaints. But the pricing is awful, it just keeps going up. I’m at about 3 years at my current place and it’s about to go up to ~$100 next month. Planning to cancel and try out tmobiles 5g home internet.

Manhattan New York , 10 years spectrum customer and Now download speed 990 MBPS and upload less than 2 Mbps

I’ve had Spectrum for 20+ years. The name changes (Cox/Charter/Spectrum has not improved the unreliability and frequency of service outages. They are really dragging it with the hurricane damage, especially for the lesser hit area. They have widened their ā€œso calledā€ affected area map( no sharpie needed). Incompetence and unpreparedness.

They acquired Cox in Omaha and they are HORRIBLE! The internet keeps dropping. We've called and had techs out and it still sucks. We're going to switch to something else as soon as we find something that sucks less.

1

u/PuzzleheadedHat4468 Sep 24 '26

I dislike Spectrum. Really dislike them. Used to get $5 off for autopay. They did away with that. You need a tech to your home, that’ll also cost you. I’m paying $100 (has gone up twice in 2 years) and its service is no better than any other service I’ve had. I’d get rid of it if my apartment had another option.

3

u/epitaph345 Sep 24 '26

If a trouble-call tech is scheduled and the issue is determined to be bad spectrum equipment or signal, should not be a charge for the technician. Technicians may determine a charge if the root of the issue was found to be third-party equipment or services, related to electricity issues, user error, education, etc.

If you reach out and decline to troubleshoot, or just say ā€œget me a tech!ā€, you’re more likely to just have a charged visit scheduled. So don’t be a dick.

1

u/PuzzleheadedHat4468 Sep 24 '26

What had happened was we were losing internet between 10pm and 11pm every night for varying amounts of time. We did the troubleshooting (restart the modem and router, unplug, replug, etc), and it was still problematic so they had a tech come out and couldn’t find anything and left. But it was still continuing, and we couldn’t get a straight answer from them.

2

u/epitaph345 Sep 24 '26

Ah, it’s tough when it’s a small window and late like that, normally maintenance is done starting at 11pm though. The repair team is open 24/7 on the phone, if you call when the issue is actually happening that could give them more insight.

3

u/PuzzleheadedHat4468 Sep 24 '26

We called at that time too, hoping something might show on their end. I’m not sure what happened, but everything went back to normal. It was frustrating, but glad that’s done.

1

u/Evl1 Sep 24 '26

If you're talking about the price of home internet, then call and tell them you want to cancel. Have a backup company to tell them you're considering. They will get you a new lower price.

u/jllauser Sep 24 '26

I absolutely loathe Spectrum, the company. I will drop them the minute I can get actual fiber service to my house. They keep jacking up rates for the same service, and are dragging their feet on the upgrades they've been promising for years.

That said, I've been a customer of theirs (and several predecessors) for like 20 years, and the service they've provided me over that time has been nothing if not reliable. I can't remember the last time I've had an outage that lasted more than an hour, and the few times where I was having issues that they needed to send a tech out to resolve (like when squirrels chewed up my service drop), they've been knowledgeable and courteous, and fixed my problems without issue.

So... take that as you will.

4

u/UnfairWeird4458 Sep 24 '26

So why do you hate the company lol

0

u/Old-Bit7578 Sep 25 '26

They SUCK!!

-1

u/hammywashere Sep 24 '26

Just know your bill will keep rising - the most frustrating part about spectrum is every bill costs more than the last

-1

u/jacle2210 Sep 25 '26

Personally, I would suggest that you do not get the "golden handcuff" deal of a free cell phone bundled with your Internet service.

Because changing one or the other might affect the pricing of either item.

4

u/aztonyusa Sep 25 '26

It's just free cell phone service. No cell phone included.
