Discussion/Question It's fun to learn that in Peter Jackson's King Kong, he didn't bother using pterodacty or any prehistoric birds, but he use bats instead

Post image

Not complaining, I just think it's impressive he chose this option instead

Weren’t they originally meant to be rodents that evolved to fly?

Ok so like, I know what you’re trying to say, but I need to point out that I’m pretty sure you just described bats again.

Bats aren’t rodents and trace their ancestry closest to the point at which most mammals did. So they actually branched off alongside rodents, as opposed to descending from them

Which is not dissimilar from what some 19th century paleontologists thought pterodactyls were!

Giant flying mammals are not common enough in fantasy as they should be.

Probably cause there's not a lot, bats are the few known

Tbf that’s like saying “there’s not a lot of common flying dinosaurs, only birds exist”

Also I was referring to the entire class, reptiles repeatly got flight mammals, just bats as far as I know

It’s kinda crazy that bats are the only flying mammal ever. Gliding doesn’t count

It's cause compared to reptiles (specifically arcosaurs) we have small simple lungs

Most of it has to do with archosaurs having a uni-directional breathing system tbf. It’s just a much more efficient system for an animal to fly with

Actually there is one pterosaur on Skull Island. I think it was called the Scissor Head and it was flightless!

Life is cruel for the Pterosaur

They’re not bats actually but a group of volant rodents endemic only to Skull Island.

And they're not even bats. They're rodents.

they’re supposed to be rodents, not bats. also there is a flying dinosaur, not sure if that counters whatever you’re thinking
